Can't believe this guy is still alive. He's surprisingly coherent considering that he took some of the most punishment in the history of the sport. Great fighter though.

LaMotta was amazing. Only knocked down ONCE in his whole career, not counting the match he threw in 1947, and that's fighting some of the best boxers ever. Rock steady.
@leosahlen
@leosahlen 8 жыл бұрын
and that one time was in Light Heavyweight and not his homecourt - middleweight.
@leosahlen
@leosahlen 8 жыл бұрын
He was, like I said, twice (technically). Once against Billy Fox in 1947 but that's usually not counted because he threw the fight to gain favor with the mafia. He was also knocked down against Danny Nardico after he moved up to Light Heavyweight. This was late in his career. If you discount the Billy Fox however, you could say he was never knocked down in middleweight which is absolutely amazing considering he fought Sugar Ray six times among other good fighters.
@leosahlen
@leosahlen 8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps he meant in middleweight and excluded the throw against Billy Fox. You can youtube his match against Danny Nardico.
@leosahlen
@leosahlen 8 жыл бұрын
Weird, you'd think they would know that or do some research, but I don't really know in what context they used it. Perhaps they excluded the throw and only talked about middleweight. Still, 100+ fights and only knocked down once (when trying) is a pretty amazing feat.

LaMotta fought Reeves,Basora,Edgar,Robinson,Zivic,Welch,Marshall,Hairston,Murphy,Yaroz,Raadick,Dauthille,Cerdan,Basora, etc. and many more. These were some extremely tough men and fighters that many of Jake's peers avoided. LaMotta fought many of them several times each and beat them all atleast once. Some of these men are legends. All of them would be great champions in today's era. LaMotta is the only man in the world to claim that he defeated Sugar Ray Robinson and Marcel Cerdan. One in a million could pull that trick. Maybe one in 20 million. In fact, it might not even be possible, but he did it. What most people don't know is that he knocked Robinson out in their second match but Robinson was saved by the bell as the ref reached the count of 9. Robinson was out of the ring after having been knocked through the ropes. Imagine that... he KO'd Robinson. He made Cerdan quit on his stool. Why Cerdan had to quit is irrelevant. The fact is, he had to quit. For those of you who think LaMotta was just a tough guy, you don't defeat guys like Robinson and Cerdan and Zivic and Holman Williams by simply being a tough guy. LaMotta, truth be told, was a great boxer who had many advanced skills and mastery over the art.

People don't understand how badass fighters were because they HAD to be. They weren't getting paid millions for PPV. A week after his FIRST decision loss (to Lamotta), SRR fought and beat another guy with an even better record than LaMotta at the time. Two weeks later, he and Lamotta fought again and SRR won by decision. We're talking 10 round slugfests. Fighters of today wanna be marquee names but only wanna fight 2 or 3 times a year... SRR was fighting 2 or 3 times a month for years! RIP to all the old legends and the guys that never got the acclaim they deserved.
