Jim is back to work in Florida at his market garden location in New Port Richey, so we went over to give him an extra hand with his sweet potato cover crop. Each fall when Jim returns from Maine, this is one of the first few things that Jim will do in preparation for the winter market season.
Jim shares a ton of tips on direct seeding & other favorite market items he will soon be planting, now that the sweet potatoes are cleared.
If you are new to our videos with Jim, be sure to check out our project with Mr. Kovaleski - you can check out the details of that project here:

If you are a local, be sure to visit Jim at market every Tuesday at the Main Street Library in downtown New Port Richey from 10am - 1pm.

People talk about woodchips breaking down slow in compost but letting the worms and surface area do the work speeds it up a lot I think.

Seriously. I've watched a bunch of these videos now with Jim and his positive attitude is something that I truly try to incorporate into my life. I'm positive most of the time but how he turns any negative thing into a positive is inspiring.

Those sweet potato leaves are excellent in soups and casseroles. The chickens love them and a farmer in my area says his cows wait longingly for them, just fyi.

itshonorbright alas! We also love sweet potato greens! They are a summer time favorite for us. The vines don't compost well and unfortunately Jim doesn't have animals to feed them to.

I have found that in order to get a prettier sweet potato the soil needs to be slightly more dense...light and fluffy soil makes for irregular potatoes.

I love these videos. I landscape in Tampa, and I have my own little urban homestead garden for my wife and myself. Hey I thought it was funny when you're talking about the palms, there is literally a queen palm 30 or 40 yards behind Jim, and there was a cabbage palm behind you where he was showing where he just sowed all his seeds.

Why is he not selling the sweet potato leaves as greens? They cook up like spinach. Also, I had huge success putting rabbit manure around where my sweet potatoes were planted.I didn't use mulch at all. Just the rabbit droppings and my sweet potatoes were huge and beautiful. It was an experiment. In a second bed I planted sweet potatoes with no rabbit droppings and mulched it instead. They were tiny sweet potatoes in the mulched bed and huge taters in the rabbit manure bed.

My understanding is that nematodes exist in the top 18 inches of soil. Is it possible that you drew more attention from them in the mulch( a more suitable environment) then in the deeper roots. If so,I would think a large amount of manure added before the mulch may alter your outcome substantially . Nice video, love watching.
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL 6 жыл бұрын
That's possible but the sweet really thrive in crappy sandy soil, Jim's soils just keep getting richer. But you are correct we use manure for figs and bananas to help suppress nematodes.

I wonder if they are getting too much water? large rains during the growing season may lead to cracking, which will open them up to bugs.

Just thinking out loud....since the mulch comes from the city, could some of it be from allopathic trees. That might explain the patchiness of uglies vs prettys. Thanks for another awesome video. 👍

The pretty ones are the new roots growing off of the running vines. Hence the small and good looking. When you leave sweet potatoes in the ground all summer here in FL they tend to rot and get eaten. That's why you get a few big ugly ones, they just managed to hold on. HINT HINT; harvest your sweet potatoes after 2-3 months, leaving them in all growing season Will NOT give you a larger harvest.
