Looking for Thanksgiving food ideas? I'm putting together a collection of recipes for a Vintage Thanksgiving Table! This video features Sweet Potato Volcanoes from Good Housekeeping's Book of Vegetables (1958).
I'm so happy to share my love of mid-century cooking and old recipe books with others. I'll be cooking vintage recipes, sharing cookbook reviews, and even showing off my latest vintage cookbook haul every now and again. I'm cooking through history and you're invited!
Follow along as I prepare a recipe from one of my many vintage cookbooks. Will the results be delicious, or disastrous? There's only one way to find out. Thanks for checking out my vintage cookbook review and recipes and joining me in my vintage cooking corner.

Would you like to see these Sweet Potato Volcanoes on your Thanksgiving table? Also, where can I buy some butter dots? Let me know in the comments!

Yes please, I also collect vintage cookbooks and pamphlets from the featured products. But my husband laughs when he tells me he is not a fan of your channel because my collection has grown. He’s kidding of course because he’s just as interested in the recipes and where you find them as I am. Ha ha ha. Please keep them coming Oh yes and invite Dolly into more of your videos please.😊🍽️🥣🍳🧈

Just a thought, back in the day, the cookbooks recognised that a lot of the time, the books were given to first time cooks which included the newlywed. So they where often geared that way. And depending on the date of the book, reflects the economy of the times and fold trends. Which I think makes the vintage books even more fun!!!

Fold top of piping bag until it's about halfway down, then fill the bag. It also keeps the filling from seeping out the top. Learned that from making tons of cakes.

Cuff the top of the piping bag way down before filling. I learned that years ago from my cake-decorating mom.

It's books like these that really make you cry a little that great illustration is no longer a part of the whole cookbook scene. It's not that modern books aren't beautiful, but it was such a stylistic staple of this era over a long span of time that now seems lost to the ages. Ah well. I feel like my name was invoked frequently in this era of recipes, but really, my carrots are just basic?? Is this a read? Boooo. You should have totally tried some coconut in this! Follow your instincts Anna! And trust your piping! These look like they'd be so tasty! Another outstanding video my friend.

Thank you!! You are so right! My next video covers a cookbook from 1980, and the differences in language and the photos/illustrations are huge. Much less whimsical. When I saw those carrots, I immediately thought "Susan would make much more interesting carrots than these!" At least the bunny was cute! 🐰

That book is super cute! It is pretty funny that cooking frozen fries and adding salt is a recipe in there. LD doesn't like sweet potatoes, but maybe if I served them as volcanoes he would give them another try. (and if you fold the top of the piping bag down a bit it's easier to fill. 😉

I love this cute veggie cookbook. Frozen French fries as a recipe. I can dig it 🤣🤣. I just love the way they did the descriptions❤️. Man style 🤣. And who doesn’t love a sophisticated kidney bean🤣. Oh my gosh you're right! They do look kinda like reverse fried eggs. 😂 If I try this again, I'll probably use less (or maybe zero?) liquid in my mashed sweet potatoes. I think I made them too soft to withstand baking. They were certainly delicious though!
