----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROSTED FRUITCAKE COOKIES
(from Pillsbury's Holiday Classics, 1980)
3/4c firmly packed brown sugar
1/4c margarine or butter, softened
1 egg
1/4c buttermilk (or sour milk)
1c all purpose flour
1/2tsp cinnamon
1/2tsp allspice
1/4tsp cloves
1/8tsp nutmeg
1/4tsp baking soda
1/4tsp salt
1c diced mixed candied fruit
1c chopped nuts
1/2c raisins
FROSTING:
3oz cream cheese, softened
1Tbsp milk
1/4tsp vanilla
2c powdered sugar
candied cherries, cut in half
Heat oven to 375. Lightly grease cookie sheets (or use baking mat). In large bowl, cream together brown sugar and margarine or butter). Beat in egg; gradually add buttermilk. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Stir into creamed mixture. Stir in chopped candied fruit, nuts, and raisins. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto prepared cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 10 to 12 minutes or until deep golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet and cool completely.
In small bowl, combine cream cheese, milk, and vanilla; beat until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until smooth. Spread frosting on cooled cookies. Decorate with candied cherries.

There is a similar fruitcake cookie recipe in the Betty Crocker Cooky book that my family loves. My family is more interested in plum pudding than fruitcake this year, so I ended up making a 5 lb plum pudding (it was my first time making the recipe. Found out that “Serves 12” in Victorian times equates to “Serves 18-24” in modern times).

My mom has one of the larger pillsbury bakeoff cookbooks that she bought in the 90s. I found a lot of great recipes in it that I really loved. I was fortunate enough to find in a local thrift shop a larger, newer edition that had most of the recipes from her book as well as so many more. One of my best finds and I was finally able to return my mom's copy, lol.

I'm not crazy about fruit cake but my Dad would have loved this recipe. His mother used to make a rum cake which is just a fruit cake soaked in rum. Yes rum! she would start in October and bake it in a tin. Then once a week she would douse it with a shot of rum until the first week of December , then mail it off to Dad. This is the only thing my Dad would refuse to share with the rest of the family, LOL!.

I couldn't find candied cherries at my store so I ended up learning how to make them myself. What an experience. First time was a flop. I watched some KZfaq videos for tips before making the 2nd batch and they turned out perfect. I wish I would have videoed all of it. How to and how not to make candied cherries. lol But I didn't. The candied fruit reminded me of my Thanksgiving fiasco. Your cookies look great!

Omg, this was SO CHRISTMASY FUN!!!! I loved seeing that cookbook and also my eyes instantly ZINGED to that Kismet game on the shelf. That was a regular to play when I was very little in the 70s and often at Christmas, the only time people had time to play a game with a little kid. So great! Hooray!!!🙂❄️🎄✨

It's a cautionary tale... don't shoot your whole table spread with a crazy blur effect and forget to get clean shots of your Beef Wellington! Lesson learned. Well some of these recipes sound like they're amazing, and you picked a great cookie idea! Personally, we're totally into the candied fruit peel thing, and fruit cake in general. Any excuse to use those bright green cherries, right? A great holiday treat Anna! Thank you!
