A trip down memory lane through the 1970's would not be authentic if it did not include at least one song by the late great John Denver. He was such an integral part of the soundscape of my youth. His heartfelt, wholesome look and sound was a warming influence for this youthful spirit that was troubled as a child. Pop music in all its forms helped to create a happier existence for me.
Denver was a lot of things to a lot of people. A Country star, a folk singer, a humanitarian, an environmentalist before it was fashionable to be one, He conquered several mediums during his career - film, television, but is best remembered for his pop and country hits during the 1970's and early 80's. He dominated the hit parades for most of the early part of the decade, and his trademark blonde hair, rimmed glasses and squeaky clean image made him a favourite across the generations.
"Rocky Mountain high", "Take me home country roads", "Back Home Again", "Calypso", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and "Annie's Song" were just a few of the many hits he charted with and received airplay for long after the records left the Top 40. Like the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, his songs were staples on easy listening and Classic Pop playlists over the years.
In Australia, he too was a firm favourite, having toured here and also achieved strong album and single sales. My introduction to John's music was the 1974 classic "Back Home Again".
I have chosen "Sweet Surrender" as my chosen tribute to him, as it seems to be a forgotten gem, and is quintessential John Denver - a little bit pop, a little bit country, a little bit folk and both catchy but inspiring with its indomitable spirit - so John Denver. Enjoy!!

One of my regrets is never seeing this man in concert....I was never old enough to, and then his passing left this as a forever regret. Maybe someday I'll meet him in person on a country road in the sky.

What this song means to me: I worked in England/Wales for few months in 1975. In a bookstore there a title The Bears and I caught my nature lover's attention. It's cover mentioned that John Denver sang Sweet Surrender for the movie. Already a big John Denver fan, I was familiar with the beautiful song, and was thrilled to learn there were a book and movie related to it, and that John wrote the song specifically for the movie. The book is an engaging true tale of a young man's raising three abandoned bear cubs in the Canadian wilderness. Some years later I finally saw the Disney movie, completing the song-book-movie set. The movie got a typical Disney treatment, but Chief Dan George is always a plus for me. I live in Cincinnati, but own a 30 acre woods in Indiana where I tent camp for a couple weeks each autumn. As I turn off the main highway onto the coutry road that leads to my woods, I begin singing Sweet Surrender, and all the stresses of work and the city just drain away. John Denver is my all-time favorite singer-songwriter. But I regret that he and Nanci Griffith never got together for some duets. Nanci is my favorite female singer-songwriter, a lovely lady with a wonderfully unique voice that I think would have blended so well with John's; it gives me chills just to think of them singing together. Like John, Nanci died too soon (2021), so maybe they've found each other... somewhere...

My favorite John Denver Song. JD was exceptional as a songwriter, aka Hall of Fame, as a recording artist R n' R Hall of Fame and if there was a Hall of fame for Guitarist he would lead the group as many times it was just JD and his 12-string acoustic entertaining a crowd of 50,000 on all continents. I don't think he ever covered an another artist's song; as he was a complete ORIGINAL. Thank God I was alive to see the total span of his awesome career which included TV and Movie starring roles. We should and will never forget John Denver!

I knew of John Denver when I was growing up. For the crowd I hung around with, it wasn't cool to listen to him so i secretly enjoyed a song when it came on the radio. Things changed for me years ago and I can listen to everything I really did like back then, including all John's hits. I discovered Sweet Surrender just recently ( better late than never- it goes without saying) and the words are so incredibly inspiring. I want this to be played at my Celebration of Life. It sums up my ideal life perfectly. Thanks John Denver, thanks to all your fans, thank you Creator!

Thank you for posting this wonderful tribute. So well done. I was a little girl when I heard John Denver. My parents had his music. I listened to it and fell in love. I learned he shared my birthday and a love of nature. I watched him on the Muppet Show. He was one of my earlier crushes. This song also struck me as quintessential Denver. I woke up this morning inexplicably singing it in my head and came here and found this post. Again, just thanks so much. I think this man really spoke to those of us who live with the melancholy created by the beauty of all life offers, the heartaches, too... and the realization we have to say goodbye to it all at some point. Yet, the line in this song is something to hold on to... "Right now it feels more than enough to just be here today."

John Denver was one of the very best singers of all times in the United States. I have 5 John Denver CD's, 2 of those are his Christmas with John Denver & John Denver's Rocky Mountain Christmas. Where I live at in the Loser City Tucson, AZ metro area I have made several suggestion to merchants to sell John Denver's Rocky Mountain Christmas during November & December, the merchants in the damned Loser City Tucson metro area act like The John Denver Rocky Mountain Christmas album never existed, it's the same thing in the ugly, fake, phoney, smog city Phoenix metro area. Arizona is in the Rocky Mountain region of the nation & Borders Colorado, Utah & New Mexico.
