It's easy to forget the historical context these people were writing in. An inspiring sense of impending doom no one today in the west has any real-world inkling of.

What a grand description of spring time, with the first broods of rooks and the hedge rows expanding to hide the small animals they shelter. Reminds me of childhood walks in the countryside with my Grandad. Its very true that today many people don't take the time to "see" what is around them. Thoughts to ponder. Thanks.

I still don't know how KZfaq brought me to your videos, but I am very grateful for it because these videos are helping me a lot with all the bad things that are happening in the world and all the day to day problems that we all have. It reminds me of what a happy life is, books, friends, peace and tranquility. I am also learning a lot about authors I didn't know, greetings and thanks from Seville, Spain.

Decades ago I bought , Lovely is the Lee, from a thrift shop. I love this book. The stories, thoughts and woodblock illustrations. A previous owner had pressed dozens of four leaf clover between the pages. A treasure.

I’ll be in London in a few weeks for my first adventure in country. I shall try my best even with a bursting itinerary to walk more slowly and leave few pubs unvisited

Enjoy your time in London!! It is a magical place with so much to do, see, hear and enjoy. You will most definitely need to return several times, so pace yerself and pay a visit to as many CAMRA pubs as possible. A pint of British real ale is amazing. Cheers Gary

I watched one of your videos about a month ago and was fascinated by your love for pipe smoking I thought I must be missing out so I purchase myself a pipe and some tobacco and I loved It from the first Bowl and wanted to thank you for your inspiration.

The voice of making books interesting, in reading, sadly lacking in today's society, but am happy to report, all my grandchildren get read to, every night, and encouraged to explore libraries and everything they have to offer. Please review The Phoenix and the carpet x

A doctor of veterinary medicine named Joanne Stefanatos compiled a book called Animals and Man: A State of Blessedness that might be easier or less costly to get hold of than the Waddell book. Dr. Stefanatos was an Orthodox Christian.

Thank you for introducing me to a an author I’ve never heard of before, that was excellent! I’ll have to find myself a copy of that book. And slow down in my regular nature walks too. On another note: if you have an interest in wood block prints I recommend checking out David Bull here on KZfaq. He runs a woodblock print shop in Japan and talks about the artists and the history of it. He’s a great storyteller I think you’d really like his channel. Thanks again for these readings!

Oh, but don't worry about that at all! Read Lewis writing about reading Spenser (see the collection of essays on medieval and Renaissance literature, and English Literature in the 16th Century. Take it from someone who has read the entire Faerie Queene, much of it two or three times. I also recommend getting hold of the Dover paperback with Walter Crane's drawings for the FQ. They will help you focus on the adventures and enchantment and help you to avoid too much fussing about allegory. If you want to sample the FQ, get the Canon Press paperback Fierce Wars and Faithful Loves, an edition of the first book of the FQ that is reader friendly almost to a fault -- but is not a retelling; it's Spenser's poetry though some spelling is modernized. Don't hesitate!

Perhaps you consider buying some books, but you visit your local chain bookstore and see a lot of stuff that is certainly not what you are looking for. Allow me to suggest that you consult the published letters of C. S. Lewis, who was like Dr. Guite in being a great reader and recommender of books. There are mainly three ways to get to Lewis's booktalk. (1) There's some in the selection of letters that was edited by W. H. Lewis. (3) There's a great deal indeed in the three thick volumes edited by Walter Hooper. But for me (2) the collected letters to Arthur Greeves was a lovely portal; this was published between the WHL selection and the publication of the three thick volumes. The letters to Greeves were published around 1979 as They Stand Together, and there's plenty of youthful enthusing by Lewis over his latest discoveries. Yes, these are all necessarily books that for us are "old," even the most recent (then) ones, but then the books are ones that Lewis was relishing and that are free of the kinds of woke campaigning, carnal explicitness, and horror of a lot of today's new books. A happy thing is that a great many of the books Lewis was loving are available for free reading online, if that works for you, or as audio books (I'm guessing), or in modern reprints, or as used copies at abebooks.com, etc. So delay not, if you can help it. Good reading awaits and Lewis can be your guide.

This reminded me that I "lent" my copy of Gibbing's book many years ago and haven't seen it since. Must obtain a replacement. I've always loved the Thames, an important of my life when I lived in London many years ago. Beautiful, thank you. It’s quite astonishing that we are again standing upon that dreaded precipice. Dusted off my Danish passport, giving serious consideration to getting out of the U.S., while it is still possible. But, to where? Perhaps deep into one of Russia’s 11 time zones. Lived in the Sov when it was collapsing; beautiful, amazing country, and people. How very sad. Think peace.

How do you stay so positive about the current (and future) state of our country? I look around and I see so many tracksuited, un-adjusted people speaking goodness knows what language, and I just recoil in horror. The spitting, the littering, it never ends. I'm only 34 and I've seen the noble woman that was my nation turned into a cheap slag.
