In this nostalgic trip down memory lane Joolz and Simon visit Freud's House and Museum, the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate, Turner Layton's House, the invention of Netball, The Central School of Speech and Drama, Cosmo Restaurant, Hampstead Theatre and much more with the usual hilarious banter and fun facts thrown in.
Swiss Cottage is located in the London borough of Camden, situated in the northwestern part of the city. The area is known for its elegant architecture, picturesque streets, and vibrant cultural scene.
In the early 1800s, Swiss Cottage was a rural area with a few scattered cottages and farms. However, with the construction of Regent's Canal in 1820, the area began to attract more residents and became a popular spot for summer retreats for wealthy Londoners. It was during this time that the area began to be known as Swiss Cottage, named after a nearby Swiss chalet-style pub that became a popular gathering spot.
By the mid-19th century, Swiss Cottage had become a thriving residential neighbourhood, attracting artists, writers, and other creative types. The area's charming architecture and tranquil setting made it an ideal location for those seeking inspiration and a quieter way of life. Many famous figures, such as Charles Dickens and George Eliot, are known to have spent time in Swiss Cottage.
Throughout the 20th century, Swiss Cottage continued to grow and develop, with the construction of new housing and commercial buildings.
However, the area has managed to maintain much of its charm and character, with many of its historic buildings and landmarks still standing.
Today, Swiss Cottage is a thriving neighbourhood with a vibrant cultural scene. It is home to a range of shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well as several cultural institutions, such as the Hampstead Theatre and the Freud Museum. The area also has excellent transport links, with the Swiss Cottage tube station providing easy access to the rest of the city.
In terms of culture, Swiss Cottage has a rich and diverse heritage, with influences from all over the world. The area is home to many different communities, including Jewish, Irish, and Greek, among others. This has led to a rich cultural tapestry, with a wide range of festivals, events, and traditions celebrated throughout the year.
From its humble beginnings as a rural retreat to its current status as a thriving cultural hub, Swiss Cottage has undergone many changes over the years, but has managed to maintain much of its charm and character. Whether you are a history buff, a culture vulture, or simply looking for a great place to live or visit, Swiss Cottage is well worth exploring.

In 1976, I was but a lad, in my first job as management trainee at J Sainsbury. I was moved from Ballards Lane branch to Swiss Cottage as Grocery Manager. A few months later, I was promoted and moved to Slough. As a goodbye, my colleagues tied me up in a roll pallet, wheeled me onto a fire escape and then pelted me with eggs, flour and other gunge. Half an hour later they hosed me down with the fire hose. Luckily, they had contacted my wife and she had put a change of clothes in my car boot. Halcyon days, and yes, we are still married.

I used to live in Swiss Cottage in the late 70s/early 80s. I was a copper working at St John's Wood and one day when answering an emergency call in the Finchley Road I nearly ran over Judith Chalmers who was crossing near the Mc Donald's where your brother worked. As I sped past her I couldn't help noticing how orange her skin was. Later you stood outside my former home at 47D Greencroft Gardens. Thanks Julian for an amazing trip down memory lane.

3:23 I lived in Japan in the mid-80s and was invited by some neighbors to an event called The Contemplation of the Cherry Blossoms. I was expecting a calming Zen-like experience of sitting outside and admiring the beauty of a park filled with cherry trees in full bloom. Instead it was like a picnic with food, drink, and conversation, but by midafternoon it was mostly a sleepfest with people passed out on their mats from drinking too much sake.

I'm American, but lived in Swiss Cottage in 1979, in a flat above a bunch of shops on Finchley Rd, just across from the Odeon. I vividly remember eating at the Cosmo restaurant with my parents. A few years later, we lived in Greencroft Gardens. Great memories.

I was on a flight from london to florida when I was a small child in the 1980’s. Paul Daniel’s and the lovely Debbie McGee were on the flights. He stood up and did magic tricks for everyone. Top Bloke!

I'm not sure if you know of these Joolz, but in the late 60s early 70s I as a teenager ( as well as others from all around our area ) from my home behind the famous Elstree Studios use to go to Swiss Cottage to get drunk in the German beer kellers which were in basements as far as I can remember through my beer fuelled haze. Also around then everyone ( including most famous rock stars ) would stop at the Trust House Forte 'Scratchwood Services' on the M1 ( where I also worked ) on the way home, as it was about the only place open all night for food and drink, with a Travel Lodge next door. A lot of famous bands have fond memories of 'getting the munchies' and spending hours in there eating and drinking through their either LSD or cannabis fuelled haze! And another thing is where the shops are lower than the road is where I remember maybe it was the very first branch of the now World Famous 'Agent Provocateur' shop with it's very sexy lingerie and sex toys. 😋😁😋I used to buy my g/f stuff from there always which was quite expensive! 😋😋😋 I used to go to The Roundhouse all the time too to see so many bands on late through the night, and also close by was 'Dingwalls' where we could get a good drink. I'm sure it used to have the longest bar in the world back then! My cousin Shirlie from Wham and her husband Martin Kemp from Spandau Ballet used to live in Highgate Village back in the 80s. I'm sure they were friends with Sadie Frost, and if you remember Jude Law and Sadie Frost appeared in an early acting role in a movie where drunk and drugged teenagers trash and rob from a London Shopping Mall. I think the movie was called "Shopping" and was made by Channel 4 somewhere around 1984. Cheers and Tally Ho, Joolz, and I have to ask, " have you ever done a "pip pip and tally- ho" introduction from Tally-Ho Corner ?? 🤪 Cheers!! 🍺🍻

Another fun fact about the North Star pub, Carrie Fisher used to meet up with Harrison Ford there during their affair shooting Star Wars as it was the only place she could think of after studying at Central years before :) Loved this video! Would love a West Hamsptead one one day 😊

Per Wikipedia, John Collier's wife died of pneumonia after traveling to Paris to treat post-partum depression (my guess is she may have killed herself). Collier had to marry his dead wife's sister in Norway because it wasn't legal in Britain until 1907 when the Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act was passed.

Hi. I was in your lovely city in March and had a wonderful time. I hadn't been to Hampstead Heath so I decided to go and while there eat at The Holly Bush and also find Peter Pan's grave. I didn't find it(should've rewatched your video) but even better....I came across John Constable's grave and his wife's. He is one of my favorite British painters and I'd spent an afternoon at the Tate Britain admiring his work....so It was all perfect in the end. I also made it to the Heath . So beautiful and also so much larger than I'd expected. It's a nice area and I'll want to revisit, along with Swiss Cottage, Dicken's home, and every little side street I can find.

The Sweet -Blockbuster... I have many memories of Swiss Cottage our main base for clubbing was on Rowley Way with the Swedes and it was there that I met Tom Parker Bowles at a Sunday morning afters... the guy he was with was part of the now lobbying group that helped fund Johnson as PM... 23 years ago it was all coke, ,pills and clubbing.... so many other little stories from that area from.98 to 02... I should write a book.

Bobbi - it was the Golden Egg I remember walking down the steep pathways from school (Lyndhurst House) to the swimming pool under John Barnes - now Waitrose. It was one of those with the changing booths down both sides of the pool. Replaced by the leisure centre. The pool at the Holiday Inn was nicer.

I lived in Swiss Cottage from 1990 thru '91 while stationed at the old Navy building across from the U.S. Embassy. Great memories. I drove my Camaro up to St. Andrew's to see the 1990 Open golf tournament where Nick Faldo bested Greg Norman head to head in the final round. I also drove up to see the Monsters of Rock Concert at Donnington Speedway in '91 (AC/DC and Metallica were two of the groups.

Lived in Kilburn/Cricklewood for years and passed through Swiss cottage many a time but always thought it was a soulless place. How wrong I was. So much history. Also you never fail to make London feel like a mellow place, far from my general experience in the area (and probably most others). Love it.

My first time in London I was walking around and I saw an Our Price, I went in to see if there was something obscure I could get there that I couldn't get in the states. I walked out with the extended live single of Fish, Big Wedge.

Aw, I'm sad that the Cosmo is gone. I used to go there now and again when I lived in London in the mid 80s to the early 90s. It had an atmosphere that I always thought was quintessentially London, a bit smoky, a bit rusty, not quite broke down but well on the way. A good one today, Mr Jules, thank-you.

Wonderful, my old stomping ground in the late 1970s.. used to see poor old Ronnie Lane swim at the baths everyday trying to thwart the onslaught of his multiple sclerosis. Loved doing my stall as a student at the flea market 78-81.

Went to Hamstead Theatre to see Stockard Channing (Rizzo from Grease) in 2021. We travelled in a taxi from Walthemstowe. Loved seeing the whole of that area. So affluent. We also had a drink in Swiss Cottage but you take your life in your hands crossing that bloody road! Would love to go back and see Freud's house. Loved Shaddap your face! The first single I bought was Under the moon of love by Showaddywaddy so the same era.

Oh fraptious day! Kaloo! Kalay!!!! (apologies to Lewis Carroll). . . . I got my Joolz Guide book on this past Thursday and had decided that if there was no new video this weekend, I would spend my Sunday morning (today) diving into it. If I recall correctly, a friend of mine was talking about possibly going to England this summer . She's been to London before, but since she doesn't really care for "touristy" things, I will get her this book so that she can explore the things that she may not know about. Anyway, off to watch this new video and then peruse my new book! 👏

Hi Joolz! So lovely to see all the Cherry Blossoms out! I learnt to Swim in the Holiday Inn pool with my Dad. I loved seeing John Colliers house. Never noticed that before. Would love to see inside it! I wonder if that’s possible 🤗

I used to like a little record store called Manzi’s there on Finchley Road. And I went swimming at the pool with its high diving board, and used the circular library. It was a nice area back then in the early 70s. Went to the Odeon, the North Star, W.H. Smith, and the Hampstead Theatre Club, which was located in a sort of temporary green shed. I once stayed at the Swiss Cottage Hotel during a visit back in the ‘90s.

Lived above the parade (where J Sainsbury used to be) from 1984 for six yers or so, worked in the Swiss pub for a couple of years too. Happy days :)

We also have a park with cherry blossoms here in NYC. In fact, the park has more trees than the one in this video. It's really beautiful. They were also a gift from Japan. The park is located next to Grants Tomb in Morningside Heights. I think they're in full bloom right now.

I stayed at the Swiss Cottage Hotel for a month back in 1989 while in the US Navy. Later on I found a flat on 8 Cosway St. I wish I could remember the busy street I had to cross to eat at a McDonald's. I was there over thanksgiving and the staff brought me up dinner to my room. No charge. Beautiful dining room piano lounge. I see it's a Best Western now. I hope it didn't lose its charm.

During my youth I used to get the coach from Liverpool to London to visit my dad, Swiss Cottage Club was always the first kinda landmark that told me I was close to arriving at the coach station

Swiss Cottage, what a let down from a young lad from the Lakes. Dad took me up there in Easter time 1965 on one of his working days from Ammersmiff, thought it would be Alps, Chocolate and Wood cabins, never mind, perhaps next time I go there they may be there.

I learned swimming there too. Used to live in Hendon and would take a bus passing Swiss Cottage every time in order to go to Oxford Street. Thank you for featuring it, so long long time ago but was the turning point in my life liv😮ng in London.

Thanks for the memoery. I remember Our Price and the first single I boughgt was the Staircase Mystrey by Siouxsie & the Banshees in 1979. When I first moved to London, I was unemployed so i purchased an a-z and walked all over the borough of Camden as i had a library card for that borough. I loved Swiss Cottage library

Yes I once lived there to ... back around 1977after just left the army and it was were I had my first joint and the hippy's were just fading out of memory yes fond memories

My first stomping ground in London, lived there over 2 years. Lovely area though Finchley Rd did throw up a bit of smog sadly; surrounding streets were very nice indeed.

My first singles were a batch of four bought with a record voucher given to me by class mates of the primary school I just left in Swanwick, Derbyshire. The shop was Tower Records in Leatherhead (no relation to the massive Tower Records that was on Oxford Street.) The were "Nice 'n' Sleazy" by the Stranglers, "Money That's Your Problem" by Tonight, "Up Against the Wall" by the Tom Robinson Band and the dreadful "Automatic Lover" by Dee Dee Jackson.
