Switching from Thuren to Carli Rear Coil Springs on my Ram 2500 HD (2019+)

2020 Ram 2500 6.7 diesel Cummins has a full Thuren leveling kit suspension lift:
Front: 2.75" lift with King 3.0 shocks
Rear: 1" lift with King 2.5 shocks
Rear is sagging too much with Diamondback HD tonneau cover, tools, and Rigd MegaSwing UltraSwing rear tire carrier. Replacing rear coils with Carli +2" springs. This does not apply to Ram 3500 HD trucks, since they use a leaf spring pack in the rear.
Hub to fender heights stock (empty):
Front: 24.75"
Rear: 27.128"
Hub to fender heights Thuren system (empty):
Front: 27.25"
Rear: 26.875" (1/4" lower than stock)
Hub to fender Thuren +1" rear height with cover, rear tire carrier, and tools: 24.75"
Hub to fender Carli +2" rear height with cover, rear tire carrier, and tools: 28.125"
All the suspension parts were purchased from CJC Offroad.
Thanks to Thuren and CJC for all the emails helping me decide what to get!

Your video was super helpful for me! Never been a huge fan of going super soft on the rear of any HD truck and you really helped me iron out my build for my '22 2500 CTD. Don't do enough of the sort of wheeling anymore to justify kings again on this one, but ended up going Thuren 2.75" w/Thuren Fox 2.0 Resi upfront and Carli R2 w/Carli Backcountry Fox 2.0 Resi outback after talking to the guys at CJC. Mostly highway with some gravel and then the occasional camping trip so just couldn't pull the trigger on the Kings this go around. I also have a DiamondBack HD, quite a few tools, and I need to tow now and again. Going to run black sumos upfront for bottom out support (Thuren sells them in place of their full boogy bumps on 19+) and blue sumos out back when empty swapping to black sumos when towing or hauling heavy things on top of the cover (Done this before on other trucks with great success). Got all the other goodies (Trackbars, etc) with them on the way and really looking forward to softening up this big girl for my longer highway trips, the gravel roads I've got to travel from time to time, and towing now and again while keeping the truck a functional 3/4 ton. Your stance ended up perfect!

Man looks perfect now! I’m debating whether to go carli or aev with my ram. I’m not considering thuren because I have a 1500 not a 2500. Eventually I want to run 37s so I’m leaning toward aev as they push the front (IFS) axles forward just like they do for the HD truck solid axle but not as much. But still it helps clear 37s with full turning not being an issue. Carli swears by 35s max on their half ton truck system so it depends what I end up choosing to do. I’m a weekend warrior so I can’t go cheap and risk breaking something. I’m glad you found an easy solution though and this vid was great thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I think I mentioned it in the video, but I opted to go with 35" tires on this truck, even though 37" would clear no problem. Just be aware of the effect the larger tires will have on acceleration, gearing, towing, speedometer, etc. All are correctable of course, it just adds complexity to the build.
@amolinari9
@amolinari9 3 жыл бұрын
@@jprohrer yes I know how 37s change everything. This is why I’ve only ever ran a max of 35 for a daily driver. For a pure off-roader trail rig I want to go big or go home lol.

I have a genuine question about your shock choice; wouldnt you get the same result with the fox 2.0 as you did with the king 3.0 with stage 2 tuning? Im asking cause i thought about doing that because the shocks look great especially with the res…but spending almost twice the price to look cool doesnt seem like a smart idea lol. Im being serious tho, is there actually a difference having larger shocks with low valving or should i just save money and get the fox shocks?

@ElBrisho

Hi Justin, I'm currently at work so can't watch your video with audio on, so forgive me if this was answered already, but, are you running Carli R2 rear coils, with King 2.5 tuned shocks from THUREN? If so, how is the ride??? Since they're tuned for their coils. I currently have a 2021 Power Wagon, 1.5" front lift with overland shocks and trackbar, those front coils are equivalent to the diesel 2" front coils, same part number. The rear I am running the Thuren STOCK HEIGHT rear coils soft rate, which is equivalent to your 1" rear coils for the diesel. On the power wagon it doesn't give me added height I guess. Also have overland rear shocks and track bar. I added about 500 lbs of constant weight with a pop top camper, rigd, and full 37" spare. So, now like you, I want to get R2 rear coils. But my dilemma is, how will it run with the rear overland shocks from thuren? And, if I need to change the shocks, who do I run? If going Carli, they don't sell just the rears, have to buy a full set and I don't want to change out to Carli front when I already have a full Thuren front setup invested. That is why I was asking if you're running King 2.5" rears from Thuren, how are you liking that shock tune for a thuren coil, but with a Carli R2 rear coil instead? And what level of tune did you get for the rear King 2.5???
@jprohrer
@jprohrer Жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm running the Carli 2" lift rears with Thuren King 2.5" and think it's a great combo! I got Thuren stage 2 tuning on the King shocks. Also, I'd suggest giving CJC off-road a call or email about your setut, they are the ones that recommended going this route.

This guys issue just proves my point. All my trucks lifts are same front and back. My local 4wheel parts has the same GM for 15-20yrs, and he knows he has to break up the "kit" to get me rear lift same as front. I'm too old for the "leveling" trend. I had 2 cars even not trucks, that had rake higher in back, as trucks certainly come, and bigger tires on back than front. 81 Vette and 91 300ZX. So I'm definitely not into the leveling a truck. If your front needs more lift, so the same to the back should be too, it's that simple. Leveling is for boys getting trucks they don't use so they should've gotten cars or SUV. If you're using the truck as manufactured for, then it needs the forward rake. Another note, no one has Ever remarked about trucks and leveling... The natural cutaway higher design of front fenders for the added clearing of tires to turn and travel up/down, is why when you "level" the truck maybe as literally a construction level put on the bedside would show level, the truck looks Nose Up ridiculousness. Well that's the minds eye confusion. "But I leveled it, but it looks nose up. The fender cut away is the deal.
@jprohrer
@jprohrer 3 жыл бұрын
The reason for lifting the front more than the back (In my case, as with most people using the Thuren and Carli systems) is neither aesthetics nor tire clearance. From the factory these trucks have less than 2" of up-travel in the front before hitting the bumpstops, while the rear has 5" plus. Consequently the front coil springs are extremely stiff, resulting in a very harsh ride and poor handling offroad (or on deteriorating roads). Raising the truck in the front increases the available uptravel allowing a lower spring rate and greatly improving the ride and handling on rough surfaces. The rear simply doesn't need to be lifted the same amount, and doing so would compromise other aspects of the rear suspension geometry.

@@jprohrer I just got a 17. Was thankful it wasn't one of the majority that a MegaCab only towed 15k than the same CC model. I knew HD Rams had some leaf spring and some coil rear suspension. So my coil truck said it's 17,203.11, so that's good on cab space and towing. I did watch CJC on the Carli, and thought should be good for me, but I'll get rear lift the same

The real killer is the tire hanging out the back, the leverage really sags the truck.
@jprohrer

It does have more leverage being that far back, but just isn't that much weight. Installing the tire carrier and tire sagged the Thuren springs by about 3/8", so only a small fraction of the 3" low it was sitting.
