Description - I'm by far no swivel knife jedi, but that has never stopped me from trying to make improvements in my technique. Last year when I was in China for a competition I met up with Chan Geer who amazed me with his carving skills. I especially appreciated his ability to get the curls evenly spaced and uniform without stopping. I'm not there yet, but working on it... The artwork in this image was done by Jim Linnell I believe, but I redrew it into a digital image I could trace onto the leather using Adobe Illustrator.

Love it 💖 perhaps a little too intricate for me as a first project, but, if I put in sufficient practice I would be really pleased to own a piece with this beautiful peacock. Thankyou for your inspirational videos 😊💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Chris- I've been looking for something serious to begin tooling. I've never worked with leather at all and haven't a artistic cell in my body. This bird is beautiful but I believe it is a ways up my scale... maybe next year. Would you have any ideas? I tend to lean through actually doing and not practicing. It may be a little speedier, but I do master faster...BTW... You're awesome!

Hi Brady, Thanks for watching! If you are interested in doing some tooling, have you heard of or tried using craftaids by Tandy Leather? That's what I used when I 1st started tooling They are basically a sheet of plastic with raised tooling art on them. All you have to do is rub the sheet over damp leather and the outline of the artwork is then imbedded into the leather. From there you can carve and tool out the rest of the image. This doesn't require a lot of artistic ability, but just patience. Also, once you become more familiar with how the tools work your artwork will improve dramatically. 😊

Why tracing paper and plastic wrap instead of tracing velum? I use velum which seems to work pretty well, no tearing and I don't have to use plastic wrap. Is there some benefit to tracing paper and plastic wrap that I'm missing?

Velum is fine and sometimes I also use it, but find this method to also work nicely. The plastic wrap is also there to prevent tearing and it only takes about 2 minutes to apply. Depending on the printer you can also print directly onto velum rather than having to trace the pattern by hand to save time. Thanks!
