This is a great video, thanks for sharing it. I learned some good and valuable things. I just wish you'd show the stamps you're using up close, with a more detailed description of them or maybe even the Craftool number (even though not everyone uses that brand). Tips on technique would be great as well for newbies like myself (if it's not that kind of video please ignore me). Nonetheless, there's a lot of great info here. It's clear, easy on the eyes, and nicely presented. Very much appreciated.

Hi Chris, just started leather carving, and one of my first projects was a small celtic treyarch design for a key fob, so the design has some very tiny line parts, like no more than 1/16 .Almost afraid some of the tiny ones might pop out if I push to hard or try and bevel the swival knife cuts or tap with any texture stamp. Some don't even look like you'll even see them! Help!

When carving with a very sharp swivel knife or any knife, is it hard to maintain a certain depth for the carving? Are there any techniques you recommend to maintain a depth so that you do not cut through the leather at any point?

Nice tutorial, I have alot of problems with packing tape shredding the back of my projects. Recommendation? Also as a beginner I’d recommend celtic knot patterns as they typically are Very easy to trace.
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan 5 жыл бұрын
Packing tape will do that. If I'm making an product with art on it I make sure to apply a thin leather lining to the tooled area to cover the sticky or fiberous flesh side where the tape was before.

What tools do you recommend for a beginner and where do you get your leather, dyes, stains etc. What’s the best paper to copy your design on? Are different leathers used for certain applications? Thank you for this tutorial.
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Cyndi, Great questions! If you are interested in tooling leather, then I would start out with a tooling kit. Tandy, Springfield, Weaver, and other suppliers sell some I believe. I buy my leather here and there. Sometimes online and sometimes through local suppliers. Leather is like gasoline. It's price is always fluctuating. So shop around... I buy a variety of stains from Eco-flo/Feibings/Craft Japan/and Seiwa. For printing my patterns A4/letter printing paper is fine. For leather, I use all vegetable tanned leathers. Depending on it's application I will use different thicknesses. The leathers weight is very important depending on what you are making and how it will function. For tooling leather I recommend between 5-10oz leather.

Very nice video, indeed. I have a question, maybe a little tricky... In your videos, you (and all the other carver from USA/GB) talk about the leather using the ounces. In Italy, where I live, we use a totally different way, and usually we refer to the thickness in millimeters. The are somewhere some conversion tables i can check? Because I'm a beginner and don't know what kind of leather seek. Thank you for your time.
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
@FischerWorkshopsTaiwan 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is. I also prefer mm to ounces when measuring the leathers weight, but ounces are what is familiar to the US... To find a conversation chart, just do a Google Search for a leather weight chart, or ounces to mm conversion chart. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Yes, you could, or it could be used to decorate larger items with, such as a bag or purse. I originally wanted to make it for a leather box I was making. I was going to use the art to cover the top of the box with, but got busy and have put the project on hold.
