Spears, polearms, glaives, and halberds dominated battlefields the world over in terms of melee combat. Their longer range and greater leverage had soldiers doing their killing from a distance as opposed to the close-quarters nature of a sword.
But does that mean a sword-wielder was at the mercy of a spear-fighter ALL the time? Our Wednesday Langes Messer class explored this theory by focusing on the weak point of the pole arm: the shaft. Fighting a spear with just a sword (even with a buckler) is difficult and exhausting. But spear-defense can be broken down into 4 simple parts: 1. Move off line, 2. Strike hard enough to offset the spear and make recovery time slower, 3. Grab the spear-shaft, 4. Kill.
Practice is much harder than theory but watch as our students (who have never used or fought against a spear until that day) pick up the technique and use it to great effect!
