Odd groupings ascending and descending on the Toms. This is a very useful exercise to develop equal strength and command with each hand, leading with the left hand on ascending patterns and with the right hand on descending patterns. In this exercise you'll be using Triplets, Quintuplets and Septuplets.

Dude, what a legend. Even with a drumming exercise you can see the joy playing gives you.

Thomas destroys the myth: 'those who can't do, teach.' Not only is he one of modern drumming's best, but an incredible educator as well.

His job is not a teacher. He's completely succeeded at his career as a drummer. He gives lessons on the side for fun and to share and help others.

@@VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM TL accepts payment for lessons. He appears most Saturday mornings on Drum Channel in an hour instructional class for which he is most definitely remunerated with equipment, wider exposure via media and you'd be naïve to believe there is no $$$$ involved. Those are among the very definitions of a job. Lang teaches, and very eloquently, concisely and thoughtfully. Inexperienced drummers may not be able to execute what he demonstrates, but that is not his fault. Terry Bozzio is Lang's equal as a drummer; he also teaches but, no diss to Terry and IMHO, his instructional chops do not equal Lang's. That was my point.

@@DAGDRUM53 Yes but teaching is a vey small part of his career and he does these videos here for us as a kindness. He's an accomplished drummer is most all areas and largely a sessions drummer. Not a teacher per say, it's more of a side gig for him. The quote that you were referencing applies to people that don't succeed at anything except being a teacher, because they failed to launch a career. Clearly Thomas Lang has more than succeeded in all areas or his drumming career and rounds it out with some bit of teaching, which is a small part of it that he probably just greatly enjoys sharing with others. And so you totally made no sense and didn't apply or understand the quote correctly.

@@DAGDRUM53 The reason I made the comment in the first place is because you're comment made no sense. It's not a myth, it's a saying and observation which is sometimes correct. TL can do. he's always done, and has succeeded, then he went to teach later and share what he's already succeeded at. The quote is for full time teachers who made a career out of teaching after they failed to succeed. You clearly do not understand the quote and how it applies. Many successful people go on to share and pass down what they learned, they are masters, who teach sure, but their career is not "teacher". The original quote was about those are considered teachers as their career, and only teachers. Like a school music teacher, or a college music teacher, or the guy that makes minimum wage teaching at home and did nothing else with his career. So you applying it to a master drummer who shares some of his knowledge with others was actually super lame.

This is also a great foot exercise! Even if you just stay on the bass drum, it'll work out your accents and timing for notes of different values. :)
