SYMPTOMS OF BAD OR DIRTY VANOS SOLENOID ON BMW
If you have BMW sooner or later you may experience symptoms of dirty or bad vanos solenoid. The number one reasons that we thing vanos solenoid go bad on BMW or dirty vanos solenoid is because people do not change their engine oil on time on their BMW engines. In this video we will explain how dirty vanos solenoid can act as bad vanos solenoid on BMW and what are the symptoms of dirty vanos solenoid or bad vanos solenoid on BMW. We have a video that explains how to clean vanos solenoid on BMW and it takes only a few minutes. I had mechanic doing my vanos solenoid and i have relized that the vanos he installed its diffrent to the one I had originally, sence then the car makes wierd noise when start, but seems to drive fine . Should i change the solenoid for the same once ? New one seems diffrent a bit and has the holes open with no protecion on them . Bmw f20 n13b16 . Thanks !

also you forgot to mention the solenoid filters thats on the side of the head have to remove and clean them as these solenoids dont have built in screens like the newer solenoid systems

Hello! Thanks! for a very good Video. I have a Bmw 318i Petrol With Automatic gearbox. When I back the car out of the garage, the automatic transmission wants to drive the car very much, backwards. I feel like it's way too high Idling then. I have to press the brake pedal when reversing so they don't reverse too fast. Do you know anything about what could be wrong with this. BMW 320 twin turbo car runs fine but when cold after 20 Sec the engine it will turn off after restarting again the engine will stay on mechanic can't find anything ,one is saying is o2 sensor,the other master air flow sensor,the other coil's with no code's I can't change things just because of their suggestions,any ideas what may be.

2011 BMW 535i here, 97,000 miles. I have the P052B error code. yes, engine basically limps, barely any power. unstable idling. I changed the two VANOS solenoids with new ones, but didn't help.

Thanks so much for the video. I feel like my solenoids may be failing or dirty. The car has a really erratic idle but what's weird is that the car drives fine. Only when it's stopped (doesn't matter if in park, reverse, or drive), the car will die. Would this potentially be a solenoid issue?

Yes I had the same problem it's debris blocking solenoid function to put came in correct place for the camper sensor to see it and align with the crank sensor. That's if you don't need a tune up first.

Does it also cause a long crank? (Over 5 seconds to start up) I replaced my spark plugs with cheap orielly brand torqued to 18ftlb, replaced all 6 ignition coils with bosche brand. Replaced valve gasket, eccentric shaft gasket, and valvetronic motor gasket, then removed and cleaned both solenoids with gasoline. But my n52 e90 still rough idles a little and long cranks to start up along with the motor shaking back and forth. I’m thinking of buying new solenoids or replacing the camshaft sensor

@@dejedanmy 2015 m4 replaced all plugs and coil packs, still having a misfire/shudder at 4k rpms under full throttle, half throttle it's fine.. and worst of all , no codes are coming up. Could be injectors but that would throw a code.. would an unbalanced flywheel throw a code?

@@Abercrombemonkey I’m not a bmw expert as an e90 is the only model I’ve ever owned. But I’m pretty sure the maintenance procedures/ diagnostics are completely different from your bmw f82 and my bmw e90… So I wouldn’t have a clue. But in the case the maintenance procedures are similar, replacing the crankshaft position sensor located near the starter, underneath the intake manifold fixed the misfiring for me

Hi everyone, I’ve done the diagnostics and there are 2 faults: crankshaft sensor: general loss of synchronisation and vanos solenoid valve exhaust camshaft. They say the timing chain has to be replaced. How likely is that they are trying to f**k me up, instead of just changing the solenoid they want to change the whole thing. I’ve got bmw series 5, G30, B46/48 not sure exactly? All thoughts are appreciated

Hi i do have 530i that runs great. Hydraulic lifters are ,new,timing chain new. Now there is a ticking sound when the engine oil is around 50 Celsius. Cold engine no ticking sound . Could it be the vanos sellenoids that are dirty? with engine running stationair. Oil pressure getting lower when heating up causing this ticking/ clacking sound? How critical is the type of oil to be used? Does changing the oil viscosity make a difference to vanos operation? What are your recommendations?

It’s not a make or break point for your car, as long as you stay within the car manual recommendation you’ll be fine. I went from 5W-30 to 5W-40 and I feel like I actually ended up getting better response from it. I’d recommend buying liqui-moly from FCPEURO, quality German oil with a life time warranty

@@Coderedpirate hmmmm, I'm running 10w40 and I've had to clean the vanos solenoids three times in the last three months to get out of limp mode, works everytime.

Where do you live? 10w might be too viscous for your climate which causes your Vanos Solednoids to clog up. However, it might not be your oil at all, cleaning your Vanos Solenoids is only a temporary fix. Mine just recently went bad and I see no reason to clean them instead of just replacing it. It's only about $100 or $200 with a lifetime warranty from FCPeuro

question. .do I have to replace my BMW 530 xi solenoid with a "VANOS Solenoid" or is that just a generic german name? .I'm looking at buying two. . some are listed as timing Solenoid and others are listed as VANOS Solenoid.

@@Sp3ctreWolf vanos is the name of the system not a brand. These cars have boost solenoids and vanos solenoids. Vanos is an abbreviation for the German phrase for variable camshaft timing. You want vanos solenoids if you’re having vanos issues

How do I know if I have a loss of power if I've only owned the car for 2 days and have never driven one before to compare it to? I can say the powerband feels a little flat until about 4,000rpm and then wakes up a little. The car has no codes and just passed smog, but the car has 247k miles, I don't know it's service history and the electrical connectors for the solenoids are covered in oil.

If smoke it burns oil. Change CCV or else OSV (oil separator valve) . Also check for oil leaks from the upper plastic crankcase gasket. If it is the CCV, no codes but EML light on and car doesn't drive.

My bmw x1 vibrates alot on a cold engine. After 10-15 mins of driving and the engine reaches operating temperature, there is no vibrates..it runs perfectly when hot.. could this be a VANOS problem?

UPDATE: it wasnt a VANOS issue. It was my engine mounts. The rubbers on the mounts were compressed and lowered and it was causing the loud vibrations. I still dont understand how it stopped vibrating when hot. But anyways, my issue is 100% solved since I changed both mounts!

I have misfire with fuel cut off on cylinder 1,2 and 5... I've done alot of work.... will the vanos cause that? 2001 330 ci 3.0... it's a 5spd... will the vanos by the intake that sits above the intake shaft camshaft cause that???

I have a strange noise in my BMW 08 4.8i E70 X5 sport. It has 123.400 miles now. I have a noise when I start driving. It sounds like timing chain. The N62 isn’t known for timing chain guide issues. I’m thinking the vanos. I hear a rattle on acceleration and deceleration. I only hear it low gear 1 then 2, and 3 it goes away. Then on down shift. When it’s cold it’s louder. After it’s warmed up the noise goes away.

I have a 2013 f10 n55 and have a rough cold start idle for the first start of the day where the rpms bounce from 600 too 1000 for a couple minutes and dont return for the rest of the day. would this be a vanoss or carbon buildup issue (walnut blast) ?

No never find out what it was. Been to 4 mechanics. And a lot of money was trown away. Car was sold as it was and bought a x3 n20b20 we will see how this engine will be. For me never again a n53b30

It could be so many different things. They say swap the solenoids around and see if the code switches... then you know it's a solenoid

E46, m52tub25 When i start the car and get on road everything is fine if i drive it, but everytime I stop for more than 20-30 seconds and i let it idle the revs drop to around 400 and its kinda like limp mode, revs then dont go past 2500 it sounds like it's not working on all cylinders and the codes i got were: p0156, p1188 and missfire on 5, 4 and cilinder 3.. So is there any advice what should i check? After I turn it off and start again it runs fine for a time but if i stay longer than 20 seconds on idle it goes rugh again..

damn man sounds almost similar to mine xcept it would just go into limp mode randomly like once a week after turning it off it would reset & now tho after a year it doesnt go away… Have you fixed it? I have P13BA code

hey so not really, i unplugged MAF and it doesn't go in limp mode if i leave it running, but as you have mentioned, once or twice a week it completely cuts off gas and i cannot rev it past 1500 rpm, sometimes turning it off and on again helps but today it was so stubborn... when i drove to work it happened i was going ~60 mph and it went into limp mode almost didnt make it to work and later after i finished shift when i started it, it behaved normal... so i think its PCV/CCV system (vacuum leak on oil separator), got new one trying to find time to replace it and if this doesnt help next is O2 sensor after cats and after that if it still happens ill go and rebuild vanos so ill write you when I find out something new@@jcbeast_135i

maybe you can help i have the e39 520i with m52 tu when i go on a trip 200 klm when i turn off and than start the car will die and staart again but die and start and die than it will stop also when i put the air it will cause to die it starts no problem what might it be i have changed ,mass, 2 cam sen , crank sens...

Ino it’s happened to me gearbox light has come on put my foot down and Rev went all the way down then when gear light comes on the car won’t go or change into gear

@@danialsolak1479 mines goes in to limp mode. but it shut off for like 30mins. I guess a full tune up is needed.

My friend replaced tha timing chain on a bmw 116.When we start it it runs fine for a moment,then it surges on idle.If i pull the plug off the intake vanos solenoid it runs fine.Wtf is wrong with this thing????We switched the two to see if it was a bad solenoid,no change...
