Symptoms of Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd)
Professor DeBacco
CannaMed23 Presentation
Medicinal Genomics. (2023a, June 8). Understanding and Managing HOP latent viroid in cannabis - Zamir Punja, PhD [Video]. KZfaq. • Understanding and Mana...
Looks Can Vary
Two cannabis plants infected with the same viroid can have a wide degree of different visual symptoms.
To catch it early does take a trained eye.
Stage of Development Has an Impact
What symptoms you may see are in part dependent on the stage of development of the plant and when (and where physically on the plant) the point of infection may have occurred.
Common Symptoms
Slow growth (stunting via shorter internode spacing)
Leaf malformations
Leaf chlorosis
Can mimic iron deficiency
Brittle stems
Reduced root formation
Horizontal growth that then grows up like an exponential curve
Greater leaf overlap
Reduced water intake
*Flower destruction (smaller and less dense = reduced yield)
Stem/Node Swelling
Confirmed Case of HLVd
May not commonly reported, but does happen
Can Vary Greatly in the Plant
This is why when sampling different portions of the plant should be taken.
Special attention to the roots as HLVd can initially accumulate in this area.
Can Vary By Cultivar
While no cultivars have been show to be completely resistant to HLVd, there are some early data indicators that some may be more tolerant.
This could be potentially used as part of a breeding program is this can show consistency.
Trichome Change
Reduced in size and shape
This directly impacts the compounds that the plant can produce
The numbers of trichomes are the same (top image) but the structure is what is different
The infected trichomes are underdeveloped
Impact Varies by Cultivar
Unfortunately it is really a matter of how much is the plant cannabinoids reduced.

My first growth was two plants, identical auto strains from a seed bank. They had the same environmental conditions which were far from ideal but good enough. But one plant didn't produce resin at all. They both had been growing fine when it came to size, I spotted no bugs, no flies, nothing. Both started flowering, creating bud sites but the one plant's buds were airy, the color of the plant was the same as it was in the veg phase (the other one turned dark green) and without any resin at all. The week before harvest I gave up on the faulty one, cut her, and saw that absolutely no resin was produced. The roots were fine. There were no signs of nutrient burn or deficiency other than calmag (but both plants had it), leaflets were a bit "skinny" and leaves were curled inwards (not the tips but rather folded in the middle like you would start making paper plane with them). But other than that plant looked healthy. It bugs my mind what could have happened if they had the same soil, same fertilizers, and light... but one just decided to be just a "weed".

How far back does this sort of infection go? I've been an "intermediate" level grower going back to the 80's and have always just thought that sometimes you get a weak seed.... a "runt" if you will!?!? This infection certainly sheds new light onto what most likely is the cause of many times I've encountered an oddly small plant, or even the time I grew one that I considered to have a form of gigantism because it was absolutely massive... like bonkers friggin' huge!! This was back in the early 90's before camera phones and I wish I had pics, but this plant had fan leaves with 11 points and as big around as a basketball hoop I shit you not! But yea.... how long has this been a thing?

@@DeBaccoUniversity - I can hardly wait for the upcoming videos. Thanks for the link. However, that study references indoor grows with artificial light and focuses on light intensity variance and its effects on plant growth, transpiration, and cannabinoid production. I am looking for outdoor grown cannabis studies that show cannabinoid concentration variance on a plant from main cola down to the last branches. My suspicion is that there is always a significant decrease of cannabinoids on the lower branches and the highest concentration is on the main cola. I wish to compare a healthy plant variance and a HVLd infected plant's variance.

I’ve seen a plant, that had the nose stem swelling. not on the main stem but directly on the nodes, at the place where the nodes and stem connect. Is this a clear sign for a virus / viroid or can it also accurate naturally?

The image shown was a confirmed case, so I would say main stem would be key as side branches would be a possible concern.

I've been educating about this viroid for quite some time. I started some new seeds and notice some early signs of the viroid in many if not all of my plants. I purchase new fabric pots, and I'm curious about how to go about cleaning the pots potentially for another seed run that hopefully you won't contain the virus. I usually like to clone but I don't have the resources to do testing. If I soak the pods and bleach it could affect the integrity of the pots themselves. So I am wondering if boiling the fabric pots would suffice in eliminating the virus. I'm contemplating using standard plastic pots and bleach to clean the pots for simplicity purposes. Also during the flowering stage a lot of leaves tend to overlap each other and can even perspirate (sweat) between leaves. As they touch each other. I would imagine that could transmit the virus through leaf contact.
@DeBaccoUniversity
@DeBaccoUniversity 10 ай бұрын
The bleach (assuming strong enough and long enough of a) soak should prove effective. However, if you have an infected plant and it comes in contact with another transmission can occur. This also applies to you going from plant to plant.

@5thelementcannabisproduction
@5thelementcannabisproduction 11 ай бұрын
transmission happens during tasks such as pruning, defoliating, cloning, and trimming. Any time you create an open wound on a plant, there is a chance for the viroid to possibly affect your plants. Typically, HLVd is spread on unsanitized scissors and gloves, so developing good sanitation habits is crucial to stopping the spread of HLVd in your garden.

Yes, more to come on this hope to have new videos out soon. In short, transfers via contact with the sap and it can occur in either of the situations you mention. Most common is physical contact from an infected plant to a "clean" plant via human interaction or an infected mother produces many infected clones.
