Knowing what you have
How Can You Prevent HLVd from Spreading?
Strict and consistent tool sterilization
PPE for workers
Rigorous testing protocol
Repeat testing of Mother room
Plant Eradication
Removing plants that test positive and removing them, followed by continual testing can reduce the presence of HLVd in a growing operation.
Cleaning Tools and Surfaces
This should be done on a regular basis.
However the product you select as your “cleaner” may make the area look clean but many not have any impact on HLVd
Not Effective Methods
Alcohol
Alcohol + flame
Flaming tools
H2O2
Acetic Acid (Vinegar)
Ammonium cleaners (Ex. Lysol)
UV Light
UV-C exposure on leaves and roots for 5min. And viroid was still present
What Does Work… (On Tools and Surfaces)
Virkon S 2%
Household Bleach 10-20% for 30-60sec.
Common lab saying… 10% bleach for 10min.
Mix and use the same day.
Same Can Not Be Applied to Root (Plant) Tissue
Previous products and recommendations are for tools and surfaces and those effective in those situations are not effective at cleaning plant tissue.
UV-C Irradiation
The viroid is very stable in plant tissue.
This makes it very hard to “clean” plant material which is why it should be bagged and physically removed.
Sap is much more Difficult
The “best” method for sap containing viroids may be Nucleases

If growers can not understand the information, there is not point. The goal is to take the research and provide grower related information with access to the original studies for those interested.

What about LIVING SOIL that HLVD infected plants were grown in, any viable way to make this soil ok again? For example running multiple cover crops in it for x months?

Physical removal of substrate the plants was grown in which includes the roots as well. This could be living soil, rockwool, or anything else the process of removal is the same.

@@DeBaccoUniversity So is there no way to bio-remediate the living soil? I think it's very important to have another solution for organic growers, because many of us invest hundreds of dollars and time on quality living soil system alone...

If you’re growing in Living Soil you should never have this problem in the first place as long as you keep your soil from going anaerobic and inoculate at least once a week with a biologically complete Compost extract. If you follow any of this guys advice you will nuke your soil food web and have no chance of fighting off pathogens, viruses/viroids. Along with creating more problems.

So after you remove the bag, do you need to also remove the soil? What if you’re growing in no till living soil?

Ideally to help ensure a clean start, yes the soil surrounding the infected plant will have roots with the viroid that should be removed.

If you’re growing in Living Soil properly making sure you don’t go anaerobic and inoculating with a Compost extract you will never have to worry about any pathogens, viruses/Viroids If you are growing in Living Soil I would not take any advice from this guy your soil food web will be almost nonexistent and then you will have problems Because all of his advice absolutely nukes your soil food web and just causes more problems.

Of course, the year Minnesota finally legalizes marijuana, there would be some new contagious virus. Does anyone know if this has been found in every state that has legalized marijuana, where it's been found in at least one commerical grow operation? If it hasn't been seen in my state yet, do I need to be worried about it getting into our state?

I know you can take .2ml/gallon of bleach to get about 4 ppm. In a recirculating system, would that be adequate to keep it from spreading between plants? Is there any known substance that can be included in nutrient solution that won't harm the plants but that will destroy this viroid?

Why do you keep using thumbnails of plants that look like they are variegated? Is that actually a symptom of HLVd? It's never mentioned as a symptom in the videos or in articles found on the internet, but nevertheless there is often a picture of a variegated plant without a caption or explanation anyway.

Do not judge a video by the thumbnail;-) It is hard to show images of HLVd that would show up well on the thumbnail, but the host plant is shown as a visual connection for the topic.

What if HpLV is a naturally occurring mutation resulting from over hybridization? What if we had real scientists studying this issue rather than scores of carpet baggers? Consider…✌️
