hey there, thank you for the clear explanations. I tried your method, but for some reason port forwarding was not working properly anymore. I tested their connection in the external access settings, and the tests failed. And when I changed my ip back to dynamic, the port forwarding worked again.. And when I restarted my NAS I had the same IP address too. My question now is, just before that I restarted it too, and the IP address changed. Now it didn't. So why won't my ports forward after setting up a static IP?

-- Quick outline of the solution -- I think the solution to the problem is to: 1. Open DSM - 2. Load Control Panel 3. Select External Access - Router Configuration 4. Re-run the Set up Router option. -- My workings -- From your description it sounds like after you changed the IP address on your NAS. The port forwarding rules on your router were not automatically updated. So your router continues to redirecting data traffic to the old IP address. While you could argue this is all an oversight by Synology. Having your NAS constantly updating your router, with checks for port forwards rules or IP address changes. Would use additional CPU cycles and add redundant data traffic to your home network. So you have two options. You can either create new port forwarding rules, or edit your existing rules. The important part being to make sure that your port forwarding rules are pointing at the new IP address of your NAS. ---- Tip If on your router, you want to try and create your own Port forward rules. Start by creating only one of your existing port forward rules, and test that it works. Then when you know that your edited rules works. Change the other rules. The reason why you do this, is because far easier to revert one change, than it is to remember multiple changes. Screenshots are also really useful. Don't forget to delete the old rules when you have finished creating your new rules. As your redundant rules will be a security risk. ---- The quicker and easier second option is to use Set up router. As your NAS will be using a static IP address. When Setup router recreates the port forward rules on your router. There should never be a need to use the Setup router settings again. Hope this helps explain what I think is happening and fixes your problem so your NAS uses a static IP address.

@@mydoodadsthanks a lot for the thorough explanation!! Will try this out. What I’m wondering though, why doesn’t it change the ip address now after restarting, even though I haven’t got a static ip yet?

And should I create/edit port forwarding rules on both the nas and on my fritzbox?

@@2pandaemonium2 your router will provide a dynamic ip address to you nas on a lease, for example 24 hours. So as long as the lease has not expired your NAS will use the same ip address.

@@2pandaemonium2 only on your fritz box as that is the device that is forwarding specific traffic from the internet to your nas

Rather than spending half an hour on IP addressing theory, I was hoping to find a two minute tutorial on how to set the static IP address on the device. Focus on what the title you assigned to your video says you're providing.

this is so complicated, there are easier ways to do this

While there is no right or wrong way to do this. I think you might be referring to using address reservation on your router - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJqgrbWpybfJmZs.htmlsi=P6KfDLotzKxcLHPN The problem with this alternative method is that if something goes wrong on with your router or you have to replace it. Your NAS will revert to using an IP address from DHCP. This in turn will slow you down in getting your network back up and running. In that not only will you then have to manually find which ip address your NAS is now using, you will then need to reconfigure your router so that it once again reserves the right static IP address to your NAS. From personal experience, have assigned a static IP address directly to my NAS. I have found it far easier to troubleshoot network on connectivity issues. Particularly if I do not need to consider if ip reservations is a factor.
