As automation in airplanes marches to its inevitable conclusion, we as pilots need to be hand flying the airplane as much as possible, in order to retain our stick and rudder skills and advances maneuvering techniques when and if the automation stops working. In all 4 of these take offs and landings (2 round trip flights) the pilot flying clicked on the automation just after take off at 500 feet and then again at landing just at 500 feet. I dont know of any airline that discourages its pilots from hand flying the airplane at any time during the flight, especially if the weather and traffic was as clear and minimal as it was on both of the flights presented. We have got to be cocgnicent of the fact that line pilots are relying heavily on automation, which is a good thing, the automation works most of the time. What happens when the automation stops working or becomes overwhelmed? We have got to be subject matter experts on our airframe of certification and know how to perform critical, advanced flight training characteristics that will save your life and the lives of all you have been entrusted. In good VMC conditions you should fly much a possible by hand. In IMC let the automation do the work... But Airbus especially is just one big computer :)

Bravo! Very well put. As a check airman for a major US carrier I encourage everyone I deal with to kick off the automation every now and then and hand fly. Get a feel for how it flies, , what pitch and power setting you need to take over and keep the blue side up in case things go south abruptly. Too many pilots are being flown by the automation instead of the other way around.

I fully agree. I think at the landing in CDG they left the AP1 on even after touchdown (=autoland?).

Hey what is the difference between V1 and V2?
@VikingWings
@VikingWings 4 жыл бұрын
V1 - The speed beyond which takeoff should no longer be aborted. V2 - Takeoff safety speed. The speed at which the aircraft may safely be climbed with one engine inoperative.

The CAT III landing was only for training purposes.

I had the same remark... I thought you could only continue Autoland with 2 AP except below Alert height? I'm new to the airbus so I might be wrong

@@mariehelenericcio7355 To line it out roughly: The CAT is defined by airport, it defines the Decision Altitude DA for Go-Around, that is when you have to decide to stop the approach. More important is that you have the bird on a stable (or stabilized) approach, meaning LOCalizer fits (heading is according to the runway) and you are on the GlideSlope. And with the airbus, you CAN do many things, but a CAT III single (as what they did here) must be certified by airbus (model), airport and airline.
