For the tae kwa, or right shin kicks, the holder's left leg is deep back behind him/her and the right leg is closest to the striker if he/she is kicking with their right. A perpendicular stance for the holder to striker. Angle the pads so the top two inner tips of the pads are touching and the bottoms of the pads are 'wide" not square so the kicking surface is quite wide....That's how its done in Thailand by traditional and top gyms....

I started training this year and the one thing I’ve noticed is the lack of capable pad holding, everyone learns how to hit them properly but not many learn how to hold them

Exactly how I hold the pads. I hate it when people hold pads far from their body for body kicks or extend the pads out to hit your fist instead of staying back and letting the puncher reach out to the pads. One note for the person kicking is that they should always aim for the lower part of the pads to avoid injuring the pad holder's elbow because of excessive leverage or missing the top of the pads and kicking the holder in the head. I've had one idiot miss the pads and kick me in the head and he was an amateur fighter. Luckily he didn't kick that hard and I barely hurt. Only thing I do different is I like to use the same holding technique you use for front kicks and knees for body shot punches. It's a much more solid target closer to the body and it's a better angle for the body shot. The way this guy is holding for the body shot punch makes the pads almost horizontal and it should be closer to vertical. The closer to the body the more realistic the target. Also if I'm working with a skilled fighter whose accuracy I trust, I like to hold closer to my face for punches. More dangerous for the holder but it's a much more realistic target if it's closer to the actual head.

Does it matter if the straps on the pad point to the outside or inside?

I've sprained my wrist sooo many times with the pad man whacking the pad as resistance to my hook. Drives me mad. It's ok with the boxing mitts I suppose but with thai pads it just causes injuries, or does me anyway. Hate it.

so how do i tell my couch hes doing it wrong
@Marcus_Kowal5 жыл бұрын
Isaac Nelson that’s a really good question! If he/she is a good person, there shouldn’t ego and they should strive to improve (I’m still learning every day!). Perhaps show this video and ask what your instructor’s opinion is.

I have a big problem when holding the pads. And the problem is that I have some big bruises on my forearms. I don't know what I'm doing wrong when holding them. Should I tell them to not punch so hard? I don't want to be that person, but it really hurts and I don't like to go around with those bruises. 😞 I should really like some tips to stop getting bruises because of the pads.
@larrycold3 жыл бұрын
Had this problem too, you can ask your partner to take it easy. It's a cardio/ technique training tool, the heavy bag is for all out power. Also maybe the pads you have are too small.

The low kick holding technique is totally wrong.
@garrettethridge6172 жыл бұрын
Not gonna lie the way you hold those pads for low kicks is ridiculous. If you hold a single pad for someone who has actual power you are going to hurt yourself and its not stable enough. Also, put those pads together for round kicks don't flair them out.
@Marcus_Kowal2 жыл бұрын
Not gonna lie, you’re wrong, lol. I hold one pad for pro fighters all the time and it’s more important that their precision is correct. I’m sure you are aware that we work pads for different purposes and if I’m just working power, I prefer working with a kick shield. Regarding flairing the pads out; you’re wrong again. It serves a purpose (to make the target more realistic). Go watch any high level coach and you’ll see it done. Recommendation for the future: be a little friendlier in your approach and instead of a “I know, you don’t” approach, perhaps you’ll learn something 🙂
