Kettlebells are a blessing. With one moderate to heavy kettlebell is a blessing. It’s inexpensive, portable, and not much space that is needed. Most importantly, it gives you crazy workout.

I used to be like Joey. I used to think the barbell was the be all end all of training. For strength training, it still is. But as someone whose primary focus is Jiu Jitsu and grappling martial arts, thank god I found the kettlebell. A Turkish getup with a kettlebell is far far more applicable than a big bench press. The “using a spoon to cut a steak” analogy is absolutely perfect. Joey is trying to lift as much weight as he humanly can (the steak). A kettlebell in this example is a spoon. Of course he’s going to discard it. But his video is akin to making a video bashing the spoon because you don’t like to eat foods that require a spoon. Not his best work, but I’m a fan of you both btw so this reaction video is awesome.

Pavel brought some of it on himself. I seem to remember that at one point, he was pushing kettlebell training as more useful than barbells for NFL players. It does what it does very well. It doesn’t do everything.

I "discovered" Kettlebell to improve my core strength during the last stages of a fat loss 📉 phase, as at that time I was afraid of loosing muscle. Did a short 100 day training cycle of 20 minute circuits with a very light 5 kg and progressed to a 10 kg. I loved it, as I love cardio, and the exercise did not interfere with my other hobbies which are mountain biking 🚲 and some swimming. I watch your educational videos from time to time, and will start picking up a heavier Kettlebell, you were so right about how working with heavier KB improves your form and makes you more aware of the movement. Good content keep it up

All I do is simple and sinister some push ups and trx rows and I keep a kettlebell by my room so I can do whatever I want. I was never able to do pull ups and now I can and my grip isn't a problem.

I went with Pro Kettlebell (12, 16, 20 kgs). Yes, they are on the expensive side in general, though it is an investment in life.

Nobody said kettlebells are better they are just an alternative. They are convenient they give you options to stay in good shape and get you strong. The kettlebell strengthens the body in different ways that's all nobody said it's better than the barbell. My problem with the barbell is the high injury risk with people always chasing PRs, the kettlebell has a learning curve that intrigues you to master the movements and then go heavier. That's where the progress with kettlebells come from also it adds to your barbell lifts.

Most people do not have the luxury of training to be a strength sport athlete. Most people don't need the strength to deadlift 400+ lbs Most people do not need to bench press 300+ lbs in a straight line off their chest. However, Most people need grip strength. Most people need to be strong in human movements which all occur in the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes. Most people need to be able to safely get up from the ground. Most people need core, glute and hip strength. From a longevity perspective - the kettlebell will keep you strong and healthy in your Human movements: which is what most people do not have. 3/4 of the US population is overweight and/or obese. In a side note, Pavel says in his Joe Rogan interview, "The barbell is king for strength." People forget he was an olympic strength coach.

One of those "kettlebell fails" was Sergey Rachinsky who had just performed 214 reps in the long cycle, then collapsed from exhaustion. I'm wondering how that can be considered a "fail."

I was never into fitness. 32 years old and after discovering kettlebells 2 years ago has made me have some fun! I use mine almost everyday. I don't see it as exercising or training... I see it as having fun because watching people do the moves looks super cool. Id rather use them than a boring weight set. I've lost weight. Added stamina. Guys like this who have the stupidest notion based on where it comes from (nationally) will never impress me no matter how much bigger they are than me. Stay hurt. Stay in your lane. I'll swing till death.

This is like the people crying in the Jiu Jitsu world. Gi is better then No-Gi. Just stop it, stopping it. Go work out. If you can afford an expensive barbell with a set of weights and a rack good for you. I have used both and kettlebells have helped me a lot more, Over conventional heavy weights. If going to a gym and paying a month fee works. Good. I learned my kettlebell training from watching this channel. Keep up the good work.

After a few more years and injuries he’ll probably graduate from barbells to kettlebells… just like the rest of us old farts! In all seriousness I built my strength with barbells and filled out my frame with traditional bodybuilding, but I will train with kettlebells until I’m 100 years old. Everyone should probably go through 5-10 years of proper lifting and bulking, but after that all you can do is maintain strength and focus on health and enjoyment. Kettlebells are perfect for that. So in a way they are for the truly advanced trainee.

My personal and humble opinion. I'm nobody special but I have seen strength gains in almost every one of my major compound movements/lifts (weighted pull ups, incline bench press etc), and maintain my strength in other big movements while moving away from bar bells since training primarily Kettlebells. So I don't necessarily agree with his thoughts on Kettlebell training.

How heavy are your kettlebells? There is no way you have some 53, 70, and 106 pound kettlebells and you’re improving a 400+ pound squat and deadlift with them. Even a 300+ squat would have your working sets at around 180 pounds, meaning 2 90lb kettlebells. And you can’t microload them unless you have bells in doubles of every increment, which I don’t even think they make all the 5 lb jumps. You could improve an incline or ohp simply because the average person is going to incline press and ohp a weight that can be easily mimicked with kettlebells. But at that point it is irrelevant that you’re using kettlebells. You could just as easily be using a dumbbell

KB are expensive ? I started KB years ago because the investment to get started in weight lifting was (and still is) much higher (racks, weights, barbells, etc). I started with only 2 kettlebells for 100€ and bought the others over many years (I have 10 now). I can tell you my bank account was happy.

The argument about the kettlebell being a poor tool because you become efficient at it is bad at face value, yes. For 1 you get better at any movement pattern. If he’s only barbell deadlifting , squatting, and benching he is going to become very efficient at those. How does he get around that? Adding weight. Adding reps. It is no different with a kettlebell. I think what he’s trying to say is that in kettlebelling there is an extreme efficiency people who are good at it like Lebe get where they are almost able to take the weight off of their muscles and use highly refined, subtle movements of their body to manipulate momentum of the bell and make it feel as easy as possible. It’s almost like they’re so good they can make a 70lb weight feel like a 50 lb weight to their body

I'll preface this with saying that I actually really like Joey Szatmayer and thinks he has some good info. But this is probably one of the most disappointing of his videos because he's speaking from his position of authority as a strength coach and athlete, but he's frankly pretty ignorant about the utility of kettlebells. He doesn't understand how to use them, he treats them like they're any other weight, and that's just not the right way to look at them. It's a Mark Rippetoe level of dogmatic thinking and Joey should be, and IS better than that. I find it illustrative as all get out that one of the strongest people to have ever walked the planet, Donnie Thompson, has used kettlebells for accessory work for decades. And advocates for their use to this day.

I started watching Joey’s channel after he made a couple of favorable videos about the trap bar deadlift. This video right here exposed the fact that he is only an expert in barbell strongman training and not much else. He followed up this video by posting a week later about how he wants to transition from being a strongman to doing an Iron Man, one of if not the ultimate test of endurance training. Claiming he wanted to do that a week after bashing a pretty damn good tool for endurance training for strength athletes was not a good look. In fact it was a straight clown like look. In hindsight he should have never made this video but unfortunately for him, it is now out there forever.

I think he misses the point with kettlebell. If he grabed a *beast sensor* (or similar device) and start to measure his POWER output (in its actually units in Watts) in the barbell big three lifts (squat, deadlift and bench press) he would discover that powerlifting-like training offers the best brute strength results but almos NO POWER (in watts). However, kettlebell offers LOTS of POWER to increase strength measures as an assistance exercise, besides it offers also lots of metabolic resistence for long lasting activities. But who am I to push that idea... Nobody. I´m just a regular 42 years old dentist, 132lb (60kg), 5,5ft (1m,68cm) who can deadlift 418lb (190kg), squat 401 lb (182kg) and bench press 242lb /9110kg) and found in kettlebell training the best assistance exercise and also the best exercise for an "off season" training. Besides, I like to keep strength training to a minimum since my (hobby) priority is martial arts, not powerlifting or kettlebell, but found incredible value in kettlebells. There is no better tool for strength-endurance and repetitive power generation over time (for knock out power in long multiple rounds for combat sports or many others sport activities) than kettlebell, alone or combined with powerlifting!

It is fascinating how everyone has their own particular blind spots. Efficiency and mastery of a skill is a “bad” thing? The kettlebell is not versatile enough? (Apart from the swing, clean, press, side press, windmill, TGU, snatch, racked squats and lunges there’s not much you can do with one!😂) Even as well regarded a S&C coach as Mike Boyle stopped using the swing snatch with his young athletes because their parents complained about their forearms “getting banged up”. That’s a flaw in coaching, not an exercise one.

I remember reading about Mike Boyle moving away from kettlebell snatches to dumbbell snatches because his “athletes were complaining” and literally laughed out loud. 😂 He literally admitted to being a piss poor coach when he said it was because they were banging their wrists too much. I remember when I first started doing KB snatches and had the same problem. Guess what happened? I found a good coach who could help me with my technique and learned the snatch within a week. Now it is by far and away my favorite exercise. Boyle robbing his athletes of the benefits of the movement because he is too arrogant to just admit that he doesn’t know how to coach it is downright criminal.
