There is a person Kuldeep Pai, also from Chennai, who is making it a point to teach childern Carnatic music with all devotion and baava? His students are not only a pleasure to hear but also a pleasure to watch. Could you do an interview with him? We spend too much time on the black dots and we really also need to focus on the white spaces. It's fast becoming black spaces and white dots! Oh woe! Remember, too, engergy flows where attention goes.

very clear and elaborate discussion..."you can't sing Bhairavi alapana for an hour without invoking the divine" is a well articulated argument...although i would've appreciate if there was a mention of objection to the artist who we accused in me too movement, setting it aside & calling out accuser doesn't matter

Truly delighted. Perhaps the pinnacle of karnatak music lies in one meru kruti of Tyagaraja: Padavi Ni Sadbhaktiyu Galgute .. will our societal status in any manner take us any way close to the lord? Padma, Magsaysay, Sangeetha kalaanidhi, Nobel, Dr BC Roy, FRCS, MRCP, are all awards and awardees certainly respected. However, whether awards which also shape our societal status take us close to the lord? Tyagaraja clearly writes Antarangamula bhavaam (in Endaro mahanubhavulu) is crucial. Similarly Muttaiah Bhagavatar writes Bhavuka Phaladaayinee (in Sri Vidyavedya mahime), Tyagaraja further writes Swara raaga sudhaarasa yuta Bhakti. Similarly Purandara Dasa writes "Adigadi gaananda bhashpa pulakadinda, nade nudige sri hari ennuta" every step the devotee sheds blissful tears chanting the nama of Srihari. Basaveshwara writes 'thanna bannisabeda (donot praise yourself), idira haliyalu beda (don't blame), ide antaranga shuddi, ide bahiranga shuddi. Karnatak music is Bhakti pradhana and virtually all compositions directly or indirectly highlight sharanagathi, true surrender, shedding ego, to the almighty.... and is spiritual music. Tyagaraja, Dikshitar, Shyama shastri composed them for every body without any discrimination. There is a Ranga geethe, which says "Paramartha saadhakara kula kelvareno" .. will you ever want to know the caste of those who are in search of god? .. Bhakti has no caste, we have Bedara Kannappa, we have Nandanar, we have Thiru Gnanasambandhar, and Bhakti movement has no distinction. In fact listening to earlier concerts of TMK compositions in vilamba, such as Jambhupathe, and the way he involves totally in rendering, I did, and even now I do get, the feeling that he is a great devotee of lord. But I wonder how he can remove Bhakti from classical music? Is this possible ever? It is extremely tough to accept this analysis. In fact classical music is a short cut to the lord. Purandara dasa clearly says, ತಂಬೂರಿ ಮೀಟಿದವ ಭವಾಬ್ಧಿ ದಾಟಿದವ (mere playing on tambura, takes the person crossing the bhavasagara) ತಾಳವ ತಟ್ಟಿದವ ಸುರರೊಳು ಸೇರಿದವ (mere putting Tala, implies he has become one with Devathas), ಗೆಜ್ಜೆಯ ಕಟ್ಟಿದವ ಖಳರೆದೆಯ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿದವ (person who dances with gejje, has overcome arishadvarga), ಗಾನವ ಪಾಡಿದವ ಹರಿ-ಮೂರುತಿ ನೋಡಿದವ (person who sings (on lord), has seen the lord, ವಿಠ್ಠಲನ ನೋಡಿದವ (ಪುರಂದರ) ವಿಠ್ಠಲನ ನೋಡಿದವ ವೈಕುಂಠಕೆ ಓಡಿದವ - person who has seen the lord is already in Vaikunta. And Purandara dasa wrote this by his experience and observation, since while singing, playing tambura, putting tala, one gets absorbed in Bhakthi. What else is there in life other than Bhakti? May be people will realize this more in their old age.

When we say Bhakti, remember it is a feeling very very few can imbibe. Purity of mind is an inevitable factor to imbibe it.. Hence we cannot expect all musicians to come in line with the feelings that saintly trios of Carnatic music have infused into their krithis. Only a few who have the inborn capability and satwik mind set could feel and transmit it to similar minds. In reality, only a lucky few are capable of understanding it. Majority belongs to the other side that TMK represents. Hence considering this fact just leave them to bark to their liking. These types have been there all times and at times in larger numbers. Better let us neglect it...

Thanks for calling out the Urban Naxalite in TMK. Great arguments on his destructive ideology and why he doesn’t talk shit about Hindustani Music and musicians. It is important to note that he smartly won the support of accompanists and instrument makers by talking about equality of pay and status on the Dias. Also, he cherry picks issues like environment, concerts in slums, migrants to win attention and sympathy. Truly matches with Kejriwal. Why are Sabhas still encouraging him? TN is famous for both Sabha and Baba culture.

Glad I found this video. Based on all the recent discussions following TMK’s Kalanidhi Award announcement, I wondered why others / other musicians hadn’t spoken out earlier. This video answered that question. Regarding TMK’s statement about MS Amma that she (supposedly) ‘distanced herself from her roots as an ideal Brahmin woman’ (his words, not mine), isn’t he doing the same thing? (Distancing himself from a presumably traditional Brahmin upbringing to gain a wider acceptance)? In his case, to me at least anyways, that was not even needed, because of his talents, he already had that fame.

TMK is playing into the hands of those who are looking for opening a new front in the war against Hinduism. All kinds of characters ( who do not know the basics of Indian classical music) are interviewing him. Their objective is not to reform Indian classical music; their objective is to attack Hinduism in all possible fronts.

My points: How come no mention is being made in the discussion about All India Radio in promoting classical carnatic music. Sabhas are largely supported by corporates ,mainly PSUs whose influential officers happen to be members of the Sabhas.Others like Nalli and Krishna Sweet do that for their busines peosperity. Thiagaraja was imitated even by Papanasam Sivan who created songs in similar tunes like that of Thiagaraja. Elayaraja`s Mari mari ninne in a different raga brought forth opposition from vidwans like Dr. S. Ramanathan. After all only excellence is imitated na.Those followers of TMK singing in Churches try to keep themselves in the lime light in their fading years. Money is also an important factor.

The role of AIR as well as Doordarshan are not directly relevant given the traction the sabhas get in the Margazhi season. Moreover the role AIR played, say 50 years back, was indeed much bigger but that cant be compared now as other mass mediums have made AIR take a back seat. On your other point of imitating excellence, here pls note that the core was not in any way affected when Sivan copied Tyagabrahmam. When Jesus creeps in, that is where all problem starts. Now if your argument is that J could be seen as an ishtadevata n hence justify such copying, then why bother at all to preserve tradition?

Good discussion.. one point I like to make on singing krithi in Jesus.. I do not think any of the musicians OS Arun or Nityashree agreed to change thyagaraja krithi and replace Rama into Jesus .. They were planning to sing a different lyric specially written for praising Jesus .. TMK does believe in that not altering krithi of Thyagaraja or any composers .. I am ok with that .. also reg metoo discussion it was raised why Chinmayi did not raise this before .. I do not accept this argument .. time and circumstances are important in these type of accusations.. we were not ready before for this type of discussion until metoo movement came and many celebrities came forward in US to accuse later it is because it depends on who had power at the point makes it relevant .. important thing is whoever has been accused is answerable to this type of things and we should not blame the victim

“Only system that has survived where poems are set to tunes.” LOL 1) He seriously has not explored the world of music enough to see systems like in Southeast Asia or Latin America, which use these things. 2) Even if we (wrongly, and hypothetically) assume that only Indian classical music has that element of setting tunes to poems, it doesn’t give any reason to make the musical form differ in terms of accessibility to people. The problem about caste is that what started as a LATERALLY EQUAL labour organizational plan was eventually recharacterized in later systems and literature to be a hierarchy. That hierarchy is wrong. Putting people at different levels is wrong.

Okay this is absolute rubbish being spoken here. They think a combination of English words make them sound pretty legitimate. So many problems with their arguments; e.g. there is no basis on which they claim that the music must only be made for the praise of Hindu conceptions of God. The very fact that Carnatic compositions are set to depict nature and guru-shishya relationships attest to the non-attachedness of the artform to a certain version of Hinduism (the one he is trying to paint here by justifying the problematic caste segregation, etc), and rather that it’s origin lies in a Hindu way of practice. The content of the music has been immensely diverse, just as the Sanatana Dharma itself, which is so vast and customizable.

That you people are discussing on the thoughts and beliefs of a living human being with out his presence over there. That you are forced to do this marks the influence he could make in the Presentation of music. Sorry to say that as long as he makes people enjoy the music....he will live in their hearts.

I understand that the interviewer and interviewee dislike tmk. I came to this video to see the arguments/discussions about/against tmk's comments. But for the first 14 minutes that I have heard, I mostly saw hatredness for t m k like calling him a urban Naxalite etc. I wish you had just stuck on his arguments / comments and discuss/disagree on them instead of name calling.

Sorry you are mistaken. The discussion starts off perfectly and then tapers on TMK's deceitful sinister attempt to remodel it to suit his narrative which is absolute Nonsense

Had you come with an open mind, you would have learned a lot in those 14 minutes. Alas, you expected politically correct discussion. This is a forum where a spade is called a spade. So, people like you are bound to get disappointed.

Touchè. I was indeed waiting to here a good opposing discussion on tmk’s ideas, but turned in vain after first 20 odd minutes or so.

@@vaidhyasubramaniansrinivas3894 If they were truly only trying to make an intellectual opposition to TMK's ideas, this video would have had a lot more credibility. There are 2 possible kinds of people who watched this video - people like you, who detest TMK's ideas and think he is negatively affecting Carnatic music, and people who agree with TMK's philosophy. For the first type of watcher (you), this video gave you everything you needed - a video critical of TMK calling his ideas "nonsense" and labels him a "marxist" for wanting meaningful change (whether or not you think it is meaningful is a different question, but clearly he thinks they are meaningful and that is the reason why he is advocating for them, not because he has some secret Marxist ideology). It is hilarious that neither of them even cared to appear unbiased in this "intellectual" debate and even went so far as taking a political stance against Kejriwal, etc to "prove" their points. For the second type of viewer (the pro-TMK viewer), and I'm assuming this video was made to try to reason with this crowd and get them to "see the light", this entire video has no integrity. At best, it is two men arguing in bad faith and just generally being miserable and insulting at the least, a very renowned musical artist.

I do not think anybody changed their mind by listening to TMK. He sounds quite stupid saying words ( in lyrics) mean nothing.

You are in denial... Are saying a culture of purposefully slaughtered animal remains becoming priced instruments didn't exist?...Are you either of you an expert in the making and handling of a mridhangam?...Are you denying the ostracism of low caste makers of mridhangam from actual Sabha culture?...Are you arrogant enough to denounce the fact that Christian culture of Carnatic music and Islamic culture of Hindustani music never existed or contributed anything significant ?...Why does music need to praise God to be divine... Aren't you aware God himself is called Nadha brahmam and natya brahmam Nirguna brahmam , sarguna brahmam...When music itself is God where is the need to praise God separately?...I dare you to have a direct conversation with TM Krishna...
