Our train had arrived at Štúrovo behind a magnificent steam locomotive 498.104 “Albatros” where it was replaced by diesel locomotive No.T478.1201 for our onward journey to Šahy. The volunteers of the “Akbatros Klub” operate both locomotives along with the carriages that made up our train.
The driver kindly allowed me to place a small camera in the cab so that I can share this ride through the picturesque Slovakian countryside along this little used secondary line, seldom traversed by a locomotive hauled passenger train.
I also found this interesting description for locomotives of this class -
"The earlier versions were nicknamed ‘Bardotka’, Brigitte Bardot, because of the curved front (This reference dates the engines as well as anybody who understands it.) Production series locos have a slightly more square appearance and are referred to as 'Grumpies' based on them having a somewhat grumpy facial expression".
I’m not sure whether to call our locomotive ‘Bardotka’ or 'Grumpy' or settle for “Grumpy Bardotka”, but clearly her crew looked upon her with a great deal of affection. I’ve rambled on long enough, please get comfortable and enjoy the ride.

As a railway enthusiast who I am I feel some pride while You are satisfied and fully enjoyed by our railways jumping back in the time. But as an user and taxpayer in the 21st century who can compare the conditions of any other foreign railways... I am glad You enjoyed Your trip.

Hi, Jan! I think, cannot be compare conditions just with a regional railways (alike 'intersity' trains) and an 'international' railways, is not it? Just IMHO, don't for 'flames'. Additional: and I, and Tim is... we are 'conservatives' and lovers of good old technology, and not 'modernists' mans! (I think, Tim will personally confirm this...) Good luck!

Chuck Sandos Hi, Chuck. I knew since the first moment from Your comments, and about Tim too. I remember the condition of this line from Štúrovo to Levice via Čata, allows heavy freights powered by Sowiet class of 781 (in the schedule estimated speed 50km/h) and passenger trains consisted of 2 locos class of 735 at the each end of the train and 8 coaches + 2 baggage and service cars (in the peak hours, standart was half of it, in the schedule estimated speed of 90km/h), line maximum allowed speed was 90km/h. I talked about mid '80s. I had good luck, my Grandpa was a locodriver and he gave me a birthday's gift as cab riding on the class of 735 leading freight, and back in the motor railcal class of 810 as passenger train (late '80s) Passenger trains in the noon peak were consisting of 3 motor driving rail cars and 6 trailers (they look same), morning and evening peak 2 motors and 4 trailers, else 1 motor and 2 trailers, line max.speed was 80km/h. (slowly dropping...) Hot summer days we spent by the river Hron, else always have to do something around the backyard or garden.

Hello, very nice video, again. Just one note. The correct “name” of the vehicle should be T478.1201 as it is a locomotive of (former) class T478.1, since 1988 called class 751. But since it is now rather a “historic looking” vehicle, it bears this old denomination on its plates.
@Timsvideochannel1

Hi, I'm glad you liked it and thank you for pointing out my error, I have changed the locomotive number to include "T" in the video description. The link to the blogspot has this to say in the last paragraph "Previously also classified as 751.201, it was built by ČKD Praha in 1970 as works number 7693".

I love this video. There is a real feeling that you are in the centre of Central Europe and that the Atlantic Ocean is a long way away. Also the thought comes that Moldova, Ukraine and the Crimea are not too far ahead and that the invading Mongol army must have passed this way in the thirteenth century. And you can see clearly that there were no physical barriers between the Mongol homeland in Central Asia and Europe to act as a deterrent.

Hi Phil, much of the history in this part of Europe features wars and Empires - Austro-Hungarian Empire, Mongol Empire, Russian Empire, WW1 and WW2. Catching a train to the border with Ukraine is a stark reminder of Europe's past and future.

Hi, Tim. (edited): I travelled this line at last time in 1997, until this time once a two weeks because my Grandparents lived near there. It is rare to me to see there engine class of T478, I remembered only T466.0 (735) and T679.1 (781). The first one used on all passenger trains until they were replaced by railcars class of M152 (810), and light freight trains between Štúrovo and Levice. The second one, imported from the UdSSR, as heavy freight between Štúrovo and Zvolen via Levice. Heartbreaking moments to see the condition of the line, stations, other equipment in this undermaintained state, but there is less reason to keep it up because 4-5 pairs of passenger trains pro workday... Thank You to remind my childhood and I apologize for my not fully positive comment.

Hi Jan, because I don't speak Slovak, I don't understand all that is spoken in the cab, although I have removed around half the speech. I rely on Google Earth, hoping the information listed is correct, in this case there may be some misunderstanding. I have looked again at the route on Google Earth where I can see the river crossed by the railway shortly after the train leaves Čata, when I turn on Google Maps I see the river is the Hron. The branch lines I traveled along during this 2 week tour of Slovakia were very interesting, some were in good order, others looked as though they were rarely used, I live in Britain where most branch lines were closed in the 1960's and 70's. Railways across the world suffered badly at the end of the last century with many lightly used and duplicated lines being closed. Slovakia appears to have fared well with most lines still in place, although some were in need of maintenance. I knew very little about Slovakian railways before my visit, now I know what a "Grumpy" and "Goggles" look like, I am also getting to recognize other classes of locomotives. I'm pleased this video took you back to your childhood days and visiting your Grandparents. I'm going to use Google now to learn more about the locomotives listed in your comment T466.0 (735) and T679.1 (781) along with the railcar.
@janpf0624
@janpf0624 6 жыл бұрын
Tim, "Grumpy" made my day, I had to use a dictionary after a long time and finally I realized the loco class of 749, 751, 752. I don't know why, I better use nickname "Busty" or "Bardotka" (yeah, after Brigitte Bardot) thanks to busted front part of the loco. (Germans have alike loco cl.216 nicknamed Lollo after Gina Lollobrigida, same reason). Edited: My fault, because as first I wrote my comment, as second read the description under the video. My foolish behaviour...😞 23:30 Railcar class 810 (M152.0) or later reconstruction, I can't see clearly on my android. Available in English wiki. "Lokomotiva 735" and "lokomotiva 781" are not in English on wiki (I badly surprised...), but I know You will understand technical parametres. I am glad You enjoyed visit of Slovakia. And You have a positive opinion. Finally, the railway enthusiast doesn't see the worst side of things always looks for the better one. My criticism about Slovak railways rose from a frequently use this kind of transport which would to be more usefull as nowadays is required. But I can blame only our goverment which does (did) not care about, and management of all the 3 state owned railway companies...

Jan, By the end of our tour we were all looking out for "Grumpy's" and "Goggles", both names made us smile - "Goggles" really looked like a locomotive wearing swimming goggles. I'm old enough to remember Brigitte Bardot and young enough at the time to appreciate her. I found some information on the Class 810 Diesel Railcars - www.vagonka.cz/20001.asp?ids=22512 We passed plenty of track gangs maintaining the lines on our tour, suggesting the infrastructure wasn't being neglected too much, better to have a slightly neglected railway than no railway. To me as a visitor, Slovakia looked a really nice place to live, pretty countryside, dramatic mountains, attractive villages and the people we met were very friendly. Governments all over the world get blamed for neglecting their railways.

Tim, DMC class of 810 is the most numberous class of vehicles of former ČSD ever. Little correction about traction: I don't know what exactly the producer meant about traction, but my opinion is: hydrodynamic torque converter with automatic gear box sounds better. The most used nickname, mainly in Czech republic, is "Šukafón", free translation with explicit content "Fuckyphone", due to rough run on 2 axles. Just for fun: The class of 371, 372 (ČD) or 180 (DB) has nickname "Bastard", in English "Cross-breed", due to a old fashioned reostathic power controll (required from DR, former Empire railways of East Germany, they did not believe in Skoda works produced pulse modulated pwr controll, while the classes of 162, 163, 263, 362, 363 were developed with). The top is the class of 361 ZSSK, which is reconstructed from the class of 163 (only DC locomotive to AC&DC locomotive, and the max speed from 120 to 160) "Zmrd" as in free translation "Asshole" due to low reliability in the early days of operation, or "Fucked up", because the class of 163 as source class was the most popular between train crews and depot workers as loco with the best reliability, which became as the class of 361 the worst loco.

Hello Jan, it's funny how locomotives are given nicknames, although some of those in your comment are described using rather colourful language. We have trains in the UK similar to the "Šukafón", they too are noted for their rough ride - please click on this link to learn more - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacer_(train) they are usually referred to as Pacers. I Googled "361 ZSSK" to learn more - cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokomotiva_361 - we saw a number of these locomotives during our 2 week tour. "371, 372 (ČD) or 180 (DB)" - vlacky.webgarden.cz/rubriky/lokomotivy-vicesystemove/cd-371-372-bastard-db-180 Thank you for the extra information, I found it interesting to learn a little more about the locomotives we saw. Here in the UK with have locomotive nick names such as Gronk - Class 08, Whistler - Class 40, Growler - Class 37, the Class 66 is generally referred to as a "Shed" because that is what it looks like (cheaply constructed corrugated iron building) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_66 Hopefully I will post the next video this evening or tomorrow, I'd better get on with some work now, for my day job I design and make plastic injection mould tools.

Gee, I wish some volunteer groups could run some trains on a number of our government-abandoned lines. There's one up on the NSW North Coast that uses a rail motor converted to run partially on solar power, with the diesel motor assisting where needed. Such efforts would really shame our state governments into returning full-time services to those affected regions. Three cheers for Albatross Klub!
