In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy, Raj and Stu share some extra thoughts on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Final, plus the tournament as a whole, including pitches, the 20-team format & scheduling. We also look ahead to the upcoming Test series between England and the West Indies, and the first game in particular, which will be Jimmy Anderson's final Test.
We start the show by getting Raj's thoughts on the final, since he missed our previous episode, and all wonder in hindsight why none of us predicted India as the champions before the tournament started. There's discussion about Axar Patel and Virat Kohli, India's team-first mentality, and of course praise for Jasprit Bumrah's special talents.
As we move to the tournament overview, we share our thoughts on the pitches, whether we liked the 20-team format, how we might tweak the Super 8 phase and what we'd change about the scheduling and pre-tournament rankings going forward.
In the second half of the show, we return to the white clothing, looking ahead to the West Indies' Test tour to England. We talk about new names in both squads, potential mixed messaging coming out of the BazBall camp and a few Jimmy Anderson thoughts as the realisation hits that we might be about to watch him for the final time.
Unless something unexpected happens in the cricket world that we can't wait to talk about, we'll be back again after the conclusion of the first England v West Indies Test. Until then please take the time to give us a like, follow, share or subscribe on all our channels (@toporderpod on Twitter & Facebook, and @thetoporderpodcast on Instagram & KZfaq) and a (5-Star!) review at your favourite podcast provider, or tell a friend to download. You can also dip back into our guest episodes - including conversations Mike Hesson, Shane Bond and Mike Hussey, current players such as Matt Henry, Sophie Devine and Ish Sodhi, coaches Gary Stead, Jeetan Patel and Luke Wright, as well as Barry Richards, Frankie Mackay, Bharat Sundaresan and many more fascinating people from all across the cricketing world.

About the seedings and fixtures, all these matters were discussed and approved by all participating boards before it was released to the public on January 5th. So, everything was known to everyone for 5 months before the tournament started but not 1 board nor media made noise until the British media started the complaints when England was in trouble not going to Super 8. Why didn’t they made noise from January itself if they were sincere? About India playing their SF in Guyana, this was because it was a special request from the Guyana govt to CWI as CWI was one of the organisers. So, all the stories spread by the British n Aust media about ICC favouritism towards India was false. India arrived in Barbados only at midnight after the SF and did not train the day before the final. Where’s the advantage that India got ? In every WC, the British and Aussie media will make noises if their team chances of winning are in danger.

Yes no strong complaints from us, but that’s not to say that it couldn’t be improved with some tweaking to allow more time before the semi finals for all teams and especially getting rid of those predetermined seedings. Always good to think about ways to make the tournament a better product for fans and thinking about conditions that will produce the best cricket. Something we forgot to mention as well but hopefully won’t happen again is for an international tournament to follow so closely after the IPL - I do think this has a negative impact on preparation for all the teams, with some handling it better than others.

@@thetoporderpodcast I agree things should have been better as the journeys between islands was very bad and because of this, teams were delayed and many journalists and fans couldn’t get to the venues . In the end, we all agree on one thing, all the boards were more concerned about the amount they will be getting from ICC than the comfort of players, journalists and fans.

@@thetoporderpodcast About the presseding it was due to broadcaster. Indian broadcaster brought like 90% of the money to the table so we had pressedings and morning matches were alloted to India. Also the Indian cricket team was not happy abt morning matches as condition in the evening were easier. Preseedings had happened in 2014,2016,2021,2022 and it happens in other sports also

Yes South Africa should have got to the finish line from 30 off 30 balls, but saying they choked I think would take away from India’s quality in those final 5 overs. Both teams put on a great show but unfortunately only one could win.

I had to stop watching at the nonsense about Sky's catch. There is plenty of actual real evidence that the catch was clean. I consider this petty and unbecoming of decent sports people to focus on instead of actually appreciating India's victory. I can't take this any more. Very disappointed in your channel. It would have been a little more gracious to start with something decent. Too bad. I unsubbed. I expect that kind of stuff from the haters at TGC who delight over every opportunity to passive-aggressively troll India, but thought this channel might be different.

@nsn5564 It’s a shame you feel this way - if you’d watched until the end of that discussion (only a couple of minutes), you’d see that we said people need to move on from it. Whether you think it is a fair topic or not, it’s been a big talking point after the match. We’re all unanimous in our praise for India’s victory and you’ll have seen that during our coverage of the tournament (and even in this episode). I will say that difference of opinion is actually a good thing and it can make discussion more interesting to present different sides to the argument and we can all decide where we stand on certain topics.

The line was not marked ( only dry grass) so the original marking must be under the cushion . Either way it’s a fair catch as he took it cleanly as per the existing boundary and as visible clearly on TV. If it’s moved by air or rain or what ever it’s ICC’s and umpire’s job. They declared it as fair . End of discussion. India were best, unbeaten and well deserved wold champions. 🏆 👑

I think based on empirical data, lower scoring pitches tend to converge teams. Look the NY games. Most of them were close. You can argue about the entertainment and thats a personal preference thing but I dont generally have a problem unless its dangerous or something extreme like low bounce. I see some validity to the grumblings about the organisation of the tournament but its lacking some information input which skews perspective. The seedings have been there for almost every ICC tournament going back as far as the 90s. Maybe skipped a few in the middle due to changing formats. But it is 100% to make sure where fans have to travel in advance. Caribbean is not a place where thousands of people can simply travel from one place to another on 1 or 2 day notice. Limited flights being the biggest factor. Both semi finals had 250 minutes of extra time. Since semi final 1 was at night, the carry over time was the next day. It couldnt be the next day for SF2 because the final was on Saturday as the broadcaster wanted the reserve day to be a Sunday and not Monday. It was a logistical compromise. As for the pacing of the tournament, people really start tuning out if and when their team loses. Previous editions, especially if india gets knocked out, had poor viewership even towards the pointy end. You need games everyday to keep the interest.
@thetoporderpodcast
@thetoporderpodcast 25 күн бұрын
Yes great points and totally understand the need for ICC to consider the logistics for travelling fans in the tournament organisation. It’ll always seem strange to me that Afghanistan for example finished 2nd in their group but went through to the Super 8 pool as C1 (as just one example of this), but in the end the seedings probably made no difference to the outcome of the tournament. Perhaps the unique nature of hosting in the Caribbean presented challenges that simply won’t be as obvious in future tournaments, but we still found it interesting to talk through the things we liked and didn’t like.

The whole seeding system is a legacy of the old ICC dominated by England and Australia. Even Australia New Zealand World Cup in the nineties had such seedings
@thetoporderpodcast
@thetoporderpodcast 25 күн бұрын
Did those seedings determine who played who in later rounds? Maybe they did and we didn’t realise. Just seems very strange. Afghanistan for example finished second in their pool but went to Super 8 phase as C1 because they took what was viewed as NZ’s spot. Wouldn’t it make more sense for West Indies to be C1 and Afghanistan C2 to reflect the actual group result?

The mark on the boundary was from the previous match. Also if the boundary deserves to be brought back and that wasnt a catch then during India's innings everytime they hit towards that side they got denied boundaries as well. So who will keep a tab on that?? The players don't have an issue, the south african officials and cricket board dont have an issue so people should stop creating controversy unnecessarily. If there was something wrong south africa could have written to the ICC

England are starting their preparations for next year’s Ashes thus they have discarded their senior bowlers to see whether the new young bowlers can do well and are ready to play in Australian conditions. Their batters 1-6 will not be changed unless someone does really badly , so no changes there. Foakes was not selected because although he is a good WK, he doesn’t score enough runs and the management want a WK who can score 60-70 runs quickly. I think it’s time for NZ board to do the same and check out a few young players as preparation for the retirement of seniors.

Interesting thoughts about NZ - I do think the next 12 months we will start to see younger players coming through in more numbers, particularly in the white ball formats. Ravindra, Phillips, Sears, O’Rourke already, with a few others seemingly close based on the team that went to Pakistan during the IPL and a few other signs.
