Do you need to transfer the wash to another vessel before using the turbo clear or can you simply add it to your fermentation vessel once it’s stopped fermenting? Do you transfer it to another vessel for the purpose of trying to leave a bit of the sediment behind (so the turbo clean doesn’t have so much sediment to clean)?
@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 5 жыл бұрын
It will work either way Zak. Transferring it first is more efficient. George

I'm making a 5 gal rum mix and I've purchased the Classic 8 Turbo Yeast. My question is how much of the Turbo Yeast should I use? I've seen a video dump the whole bag in. That seems excessive to me, but this is my first time. Any help would be helpful. Thanks.
@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 5 жыл бұрын
The whole bag is usually the requirement. Your bag of turbo yeast is probably about 4 ounces or so. Most of that is diamonium phosphate and nutrients with less then 1 ounce of yeast. Use the whole thing. Good luck and happy distilling George

I'm fermenting my first sugar wash with regular distiller's yeast. It's fermenting beautifully so far. My question is: Can I use the turbo carbon once the fermenting is done?
@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 5 жыл бұрын
Turbo carbon is messy and designed to go in during fermentation. If you are already fermenting don't add this.

Hi. I run a 3 bucket wash plus 1 bucket racking production line. I run the still (Turbo 500) once a week so my washs are 3 weeks old before racking and 4 weeks old before stilling. I have stop using turbo clear manly because the racked wash is fairly clear after one week and I'm basically lazy. My question is; should I still run the turbo clear through the racked wash? Very interested in your thoughts.
@barleyandhopsbrewingllc2.054
@barleyandhopsbrewingllc2.054 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would still run some turbo clear. Mainly because the clearer your wash is the more pure your product is. But, if you’re happy with your results; well as George says, “if it makes you giggle do it as often as you can!”

Don't waste money on turbo clear. Use Lalvin EC-1118 yeast and rack it off when it's done fermenting, then use a little gelatin finings and let it sit 24 hours and rack it again. Cheap as can be and probably even clearer than this video shows. Turbo clear is only worth it if you're using turbo yeast, but turbo yeast has an unpleasant ester profile to it, so if you're not refluxing all the way to 93% or so, your product is going to taste off. Lalvin EC-1118 will take you to 18% if you take care of it, the extra 2% you'll get with turbo yeast isn't worth the trouble.

Can't you just toss a bit of butter or coconut oil in the still to prevent scorching?
@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 5 жыл бұрын
Since it is oil based it will rise to the surface and sit there. This is good for anti-foaming but not for anti scorching.

@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 6 жыл бұрын
Turbo 24
@jttech44
@jttech44 6 жыл бұрын
That's why you have to clear it so much. Turbo24 doesn't flocculate. Something like Lalvin EC-1118 will get you close to 18% and flocculates to the bottom really well. If you can cold crash it to 40f or so, you won't even need to rack it more than once and I think the flavor is much better, (it's also much cheaper). Turbo24 and derivatives was made for fuel, so unless you're making fuel it's not so great for flavors.

i made a wash with white sugar but its not fermenting much? can white sugar be unfermentable so i need to add amylase enzymes? or is a gravity of 1180 too high for the yeast? gravity has only dropped to 1170 in 3days.
@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 6 жыл бұрын
That is a high gravity. Give it a few more days to see what happens. Obviously it is fermenting but now we need to wait to see. George

if its not really sticky anymore but the gravity is 1170.. does that mean its unfermentable sugars thats in the wash?
@BarleyandHopsBrewing
@BarleyandHopsBrewing 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure. Try stirring it up to ensure all the sugar has melted and is not just sitting on the bottom. Only three days of fermenting is not enough. Leave it at least 7 days and test it again. it should be just fine. George

Make sure your PH levels are in the 4.5ish range and you're feeding it enough nutrient. The best way to run that wash would be to put your sugar and nutrient in it half at a time, waiting about 5 days before you add the rest of it. That'll give the yeast time to process the first batch of sugar, and then when you add the second half after they've been working on it they'll be alot happier. You can get a cheap PH meter on amazon for 30 bucks or so. If you need to adjust PH, it's likely because it's too low. For that use calcium carbonate. That'll regulate PH where you need it with no real off flavors. Use about a half teaspoon per gallon of wash. You can't put too much because it'll fall out and get taken back into solution as it needs to maintain around a 4.5. This is called a 'buffer'.

@barleyandhopsbrewingllc2.054
@barleyandhopsbrewingllc2.054 6 жыл бұрын
Down here in Texas table sugar runs about $.65/lb. I sell corn sugar for $1.20/lb. However, when you look at the overall cost for the two batches the table sugar batch cost about $23 and the corn sugar batch was about $31. So about a $8 difference. Well worth it in my opinion.

You would be straining it instead of filtering but yes.
@karlosss1868
@karlosss1868 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Terryray. The answer is No (unfortunately). The yeast is so fine goes straight through the cheesecloth. If you found a filter fine enough (like the filterbrite systems), it still wouldn't be worth doing as the amount of yeast in the wash is huge & would clog a filter VERY quickly.
