The House of Sallust at Pompeii was discovered more than 200 years ago, and still is one of the best-preserved elite homes in the city. In it, you can see both continuity & modification -- both reflecting the tastes and styles of Roman life over time. I have used the "Medieval Engineers" software engine with many mods to create this walkable, playable, explorable version. This introduction will show you a little bit about how Romans conceived of the idea of "home" and how they used their space to reflect their values. I hope you enjoy!
If you have Medieval Engineers, you can download and walk through this whole Pompeii build yourself, at no extra charge. It's on the Steam Workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...

As amazing as the people's lives must have been who could afford such a luxurious home, I feel 100 times luckier to be alive during a time where at the click of a mouse I can learn about really amazing stuff, such as how they may have lived and enjoyed their time, and then with another click of the mouse learn something else really cool. Thanks for this video!

That type of construction/floor plan which is out of style today is wonderful way to bring light in and keep the houses very cool in the hot summer days. Today we have opted for AC. But in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and every Latin American country there are houses with that layout and it is very effective in controlling outside temperature. They are also very private.

Thank you for recreating this Roman style villa on video. I have visited Pompeii and was impressed by the size of the town. The houses of the wealthier citizens were beautiful and they must have enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle in their day but of course it was all buried by the eruption of 79AD.

Thanks for the note! Yeah it seems that this video makes the KZfaq rounds once every 4 or 6 months or so. I never imagined that half a million people would have seen it by now! Unfortunately the game was updated, broke a whole bunch of things, and then released/abandoned. It stopped working well on my computer and has kind of gone into the dustbin of gaming history. A real shame because it had so much potential. I'm glad people are still seeing the videos though.

Something to keep in mind is that wooden and fabric furniture did not survive in Pompeii (very interestingly that some wood _survived_ in Herculaneum), so that’s a dynamic of the domicile more or less left to imagination. The only surviving clues of it being what was sometimes depicted in their paintings/frescos

Thank you for such a nice note. I'm really glad you enjoyed this. Yes, when I was recreating the spaces there were times when I just stopped and "walked" my character through it, looking at how the light would come through the compluvium, or wandering in the back garden. It's so poignant that the same volcano that caused so much death and destruction also preserved this place for us to learn & get inspired by!
