Sean Dyche's Burnley have performed surprisingly well so far this season. Their defensive record rivals some of the best teams in the league, conceding just 9 goals, despite enduring significantly more shots on their goal than the other teams with such a low rate of goals conceded.

All those saying that this is boring football, well guess what? Burnley don't have the financial power to compete with most teams in the league and their main aim is to stay up in the PL, not to win the title. Their style of play is effective and will help them achieve their goal. Stop expecting tiki-taka or high octane football from every team.

I think it's only happen in football, where the fans doesn't really appreciate defense. Other sports such as american football, basketball, etc is really appreciate defense as much as they appreciate offense. It's entertaining to watch different teams playing differently.

When are you guys gonna incorporate stats such as Expected Goals (xG) into this series? I think xG (conceded) would've helped even more in explaining how effective Burnley's low block is in limiting (quality) scoring chances for their opposition. Love the series. Love the channel. In my opinion, playing two up front with wingbacks is the best way to unlock a low block like this. The two strikers forces the centre backs to split allowing balls to be crossed into space

Exactly. Play without two wide men and Burnley will overload you on the wings unless you have two Diego Costas in your team as strikers haha

Bus parking doesn't mean that they can't attack...morinhos teams use counter attacks very well and it always helps to have goal machines like Ronaldo or messi

Dyche’s defensive organization works amazingly in a league system, but probably won’t help you too much in a cup run. Still have so much respect for the man tho

Paco Piedad No cup run, to be realistic, for Burnley. They are doing well in the League, which is a pragmatic and preety succesful campaign.

I wondered why Salah and Mane had such poor records against Burnley, now it makes sense that the low block and narrow defence line limits shots from angles as you say. Firmino has a much better record, maybe due to playing in a central attacking mid/striker role? It makes me wonder whether Jota might do well in the same position this Saturday.

Our style is ever so slowly evolving, not helped now by our most creative player Robbie Brady being out for the season, it's a huge blow. I think a top 10 finish would be incredible when you look at the size of the town and our budget (no fancy foreign billionaires), and the longer we spend in the premier league the better players we can buy. We simply don't have the players or the money to be trying to outscore teams, anyone saying defending is boring really doesn't understand the realities of the premier league.

Maybe it's just me, but I love watching defensively sound football. Chelsea's main defensive pairing in 2004/5 (John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho) were so damn fun to watch.

Surely the high number of shots on target faced and low percentage scored means the defenders aren't actually that good and its their goalkeepers playing amazing???

Partialy, the defenders are positioned so that they cover the sides of the goal, so when a shot comes they can aim for the sides of the goal, but a centre defender is standing in front of it, or the middle, where the keeper is. This creates of lot of easy chances for heaton or pope to save.

It's not flawed. This is just shallow analysis. Those are fundamentals they explained that have been around for decades and decades. Many low budget teams play like this, but not many are as successful. There is something else to it that they didn't cover at all.

killercaos123 Dude, Burnley cannot just aim for top 4. They are perfect, almost, defending wise - and it helps relieve pressure from strikers. Because guess what? They do not have MSN or BBC up front. Also also, Burnley ARE doing well this season, even if it is, as some expert called it, through "Boring...regressive football." Now shut the fuck up and think before you start yapping.
