Manchester City spent a lot of money on full-backs this summer. By bringing in Danilo, Benjamin Mendy, and Kyle Walker, Pep Guardiola strengthened an area that Manchester City were weak in and secured players that are key to the style the Spanish manager wants to play. In this video, we break down that style of play.

I remember when Pep played Philip Lahm In holding midfielder, Mascherano in Centreback, Cesc as False 9 and all went well, that made me think that PEP is a GENIUS COACH.. Im a united die hard fans but its hard to not say Pep is a pure genius!

Man itd supposed to hire him in terms of man utd phylosophy.. well thats just my opinion

Holyfuck Guardiola tactics become harder everytime he switch club, i mean for FM players. His Barcelona is the most easiest to replicate but i make it with highpressing Klopp style to make sure my club wont get his failer on his late barca days. On Munich, His style of 4-1-4-1 is quite medium lvl of tryhard. Bcs they play semi-direct but possession style based football which means they strong quick one-two passes on the midfield and fast directy with through ball or kinda when they drift the ball wide (robben & ribbery and obviously Coman). BUT THIS! GOD, playing with 2 IWB (inverted wing back) is hardly enough to notice wide gap on your wide areas. This is why they get rid all of their "old school" fullback, bcs they're not comfortable enough to play narrowly in midfield except kolarov. Thank you sir for uploading such as quality content and keep your old guy to 'voicing' this haha XD note: u should notice that Guardiola loves to play a halfback so thats one of the reason Yaya Toure never make it to him

Here's the thing earl, did he use that a lot? no. So, this is new system he try to use in PL and its really interesting tactics. His original formula is 4-3-3 with one dm as a half-back. His 2 wingers can cuts inside or stretch the pitch like a casual fullback BUT if their winger or in this case is inside forwards they tend to cutting diagonally so the fullback can push as higher as possible then if their winger do stretch the pitch or hugging lines, their fullback will create a triangle between the midfielders as the video explained above. Thats why i called this brilliant tactics.

Good video. I'm a Barcelona and City fan. I just want to point the fact that his "vision" of the game is not achievable for all the teams. He needs great players who know how to play in differents parts of the pitch. Basically great players

My opinion is that Guardiola is looking for the excellency. I love his idea of the game. Great players cost money. Currently hundreds millions. Middle teams can't afford that. It's just a fact. However in Barcelona he got some great players from academy who grew up with this style of game plus the ones who he bought. That's one of the reasons that (almost) everybody felt in love with Barça in that time. Obviously to achieve that needs a team who offers you a big project. Regards

Given Guardiola's penchant for players that are able to play in a variety of roles; I wonder a lesser (but still effective) version of his tactics could work in the lower leagues with a collection of 'utility' players and one or two specialists (a dedicated defender and striker for example).
@ultramage1
@ultramage1 6 жыл бұрын
it probably can, but as someone noted earlier , his tactics gets more complex when he switches to a club with less quality, barca was easy to follow, 4-3-3, with false 9 and pure possession , bayern became 4-1-4-1 with mix of direct and possession and now at city 3-1-4-2..his tactics are down to their bear core, press, and overload.

pep is my favourite coach but i doubt that he can implement this in a team in lower league. feel like most of the players that he attempted to re-identify/ chose to play in his formation are those players with really good football intelligence. without this very important aspect, i don't think he can implement his style or variations on that particular. the first example that comes to my mind is Liverpool's jordan henderson. LOL. if pep can "train" him to a point where he can play like “50% of busquets/ alaba", I would call him a god. lul

Great video, this is one of my favorite series on youtube, but being nit-picky I disagree with how it was written for one main reason. Since the video introduces the concept of inverted fullbacks first, it leads the viewer to believe that this is Pep's primary system that he uses, whereas he abandoned the inverted fullback project in the middle of last season. Everything describing the system is spot-on, Pep using his fullbacks as extra midfielders to create overloads and get KDB the ball in the space between the opposition lines, etc., but do you think that maybe Pep utilized this system due to the limited athleticism of his fullbacks last year? When Sagna tucked in next to Fernandinho early last season, it almost reminded me of how Lahm was played as a midfielder in Pep's Bayern. Moving on from that, the second model you showed definitely more accurately portrays the system he's been implementing in 17/18, with the athletic fullbacks with strong crossing skills (Walker and Mendy) hugging touch while his wing players operate more as inside forwards in the half spaces. This has definitely contributed to Sterling's form this season I believe. Finally, how do you guys feel about Pep's 3-back/5-back system he experimented with during preseason? Wing backs pressing high as soon as the ball is played to a winger as to force a touch backward, extra CB used as cover for WB that can step without compromising defensive integrity in the centre, etc. Very tactically demanding system that you could tell the defense was struggling with in their heads trying to keep where they were supposed to be straight and when to press or not. I admired the system, but it definitely wasn't ready for PL use yet. Keep up the incredible work!

I think Pep plays a very dangerous game, and no wonder they concede goals that should've been sorted out without any problem by any other team this year I think the league is done city will go and win it but the main question is how they will perform against teams like Madrid, PSG, Barcelona, and Bayern. Who can not only control the ball at ease but can play counter and stretch the opposition easily while attacking the only answer is we have to wait and see what happens, btw great video.

Fast forward 2020 and they loan a good FB to learn Leipzig. He is doing wonders there and pep is having issues realizing that zenchenco and cancello aren't in their best form.

ariean rachmat he's not out that long, is he a really injury prone player I don't know but it's not like they miss him with the likes of D silva and KDB but once he's back it's a benefit for sure

I didn't watch the latest matches of Man City. But from this explanation, actually City always use their full backs to support the midfielders in opposition's defense. Inverted wing back is not a new tactic because Pellegrini used it from 13-14 season but not in every match. Even we can see tiki taka tactic clearly, actually City in Guardiola's era is quietly different from Bayern and Barca in his era. I think Guardiola adapts English-styled crossing game. You can see how Sané and Sterling did in previous matches.

with 2 fullbacks inside to outnumber the opponent 's midfield , what the heck is that , that is only when they play possesion football and you said with 2 fullbacks inside ,wingers dont need to defend ? another wtf , the whole wing got exposed and the one ones who defend that space is centre back ,how can they match up with the speed of other team's wingers

So far I haven't been impressed by his City team, they look very disjointed. For this first time in his career Pep will have to build his own squad, let's see how good he's actually is.

The trick is to have midfielders who disguise as fullbacks...or fullbacks who can play in midfield and win the ball and keep it
