Martin Neumann (student of Master Fernando Chédel, the lineage holder of Ma Tsun Kuen Tai Chi Chuan, www.matsunkuen.com) and Giles Rosbander give an insight into their practice and teaching of Tui Shou.
This is not a 'self-defence' video. It shows some of our training and teaching in the tuishou/pushing- hands segment of Tai Chi Chuan, ranging from basic structures and skills through fixed patterns and onward to free play and tuishou-based applications.
This is just 'one slice of the Tai Chi Chuan cake', although in our opinion one that is relevant and useful both for solo practice (basics, forms) and for fighting and awareness skills.
In one section of this video (5:01) the Chinese terms 'ting', 'hua', 'na' und 'fa' are used. This can here be taken to mean: 'hear', 'neutralize', 'seize' and 'issue force'.

I love Tai Chi Ch'uan. It has changed, and in some cases saved, my life. Having said this. If you are in the hopes of finding self defence skills in Tai Chi, and your teacher has never been in a fight in his life. You need a better teacher. You can gain skills with Tai Chi Ch'uan. Of this I have no doubt. But without an experienced teacher this is unlikely to help you when in conflict. And even then real skills take decades. So, if you are young. Good, you have time and started early. If you are old, its going to take awhile. Daily training for two or three hours. And self defence training MUST include strength training. And fast accurate movements. Know why you chose Tai Chi to begin with. This Art is very deep. But doesn't give up its secrets easily. I began studying Tai Chi Ch'uan over forty years ago. Sehr beeindruckende Übungen.Dem Harten des Karate o.a. Kampfkünste wird hier das Weiche des Tai chi entgegengesetzt. Kein Wunder also, dass so viele Tai chi Meister die Wettkämpfe gewannen, obwohl auch hier die alte Regel gelten sollte: "Der Bessere gewinnt". Sehr gute Demonstration, Martin. Was für ein besonderer, schön-präziser Film! Bewegung, Sprache und Bild kommen auf den Punkt zusammen und die Prinzipien werden gut spürbar: durch den Rhythmus des permanenten Wechselspiels von spürender Aufnahme und entschiedener Umwandlung, die Untrennbarkeit dieser Momente in ihrer Unterschiedenheit wird das Zuschauen zur leiblichen 'Resonanz-Erfahrung'.

This is more realistic tai chi versus some of the silly push hands out there where they are moving their opponents while barely touching them. I also like that you incorporate strikes, chin na, and take downs in your practice. Many instructors and schools do not do this and only work on sensitivity. Nice video.

Thanks, Erwin. This video shows 'friendly' training but we like to keep a relationship with reality. Actually we have both progressed further since this video was made. It's still okay as a document of where we were ten years ago - we aim to put out a new video soon.

No, not at all. It's mostly based on the Ma Tsun Kuen lineage as taught by Fernando Chedel, in this video also incorporating other elements taken from the Cheng Man Ching lineage of Yang style, and from Wu style as taught by Paul Rogers. And of course our very own, personally developed deficiencies and deviations ;-)

Taiji tuishou is a kind of double dance where you won't feel weird seeing two dancers of the same sex move together.

Gibt es eine Übung zum pushing hands wärend der Corona Zeit. Es ist ja leider Kontakt Verbot. Ich weiss pushing ✋ lernt man eher zu zweit . Gerade auch als Anfänger. Doch diese Situation ist gerade anders. Und mir fällt nicht ein . Wie ich dennoch ein wenig pushing ✋ üben könnte. Ggf versteht sich.

Möglich (aber nicht unbedingt empfohlen): Du kannst mit einem Partner ein langsames und vorsichtiges "tuishou" mit langen Stöcken machen. Da bleibt man immer mindestens 2 Meter auf Abstand.Eine andere Möglichkeit: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9GlhdiHutXXkok.html&t. Hier kannst du üben, MIT dem Stock und der Schwerkraft zu spielen, dem Stock zu "folgen" und nicht den Stock zu bewegen/manipulieren. Viel Spaß!

The flow and energy drills are excellent. As far as combat it's highly impractical.

As far as training your body to automatically react based on touching your opponent and being able to know where he is going to move is body is worth more than these being practical in any sense. It teaches abilities that transfer over into life. If u get it to a super high level your reading your opponents mind without touching. Idgaf if u believe me or think I'm wrong. The truth is the truth. Train any form of kung fu actually correctly and u will without being explained anything but the forms naturally use whatever movement fits best.

That isn't effective to know. If u parry your opponents punch and now know your opponents next move its more than worth it. Sorry being basically telepathic in fighting isnt worth it. Kinda being hard on you but everything I said is absolutely factual and can be proven very easily. With little effort.

@@daltondammthebabe I disagree, you weren't hard on me or hyper crititical. The problem with Tai Chi isn't the drills, concepts or energy and flow drills. The problem is if you throw, off balance an opponent across the room they are not physically harmed and will come right back. Like a really weak jab, they just keep coming back. A great art though when you can incorporate the flow and energy drills in training. Sorry, but parting the horses main does not hurt.

Hi Jeff, Giles here. Thanks to you (and Street Justice) for your considered remarks. Actually I totally agree with you as regards your comments about “throwing someone across the room who will then just come back” when you really need to defend yourself. In some situations anyway. I could write an essay on this but no time or space for that, so: This video is quite old now, both Martin and I are further down the road since then. More importantly, we were showing aspects of the tuishou/pushhands training we were offering then. Not a ‘fighting with tai chi’ course. Very briefly, in some situations it may actually be enough to just slip the attacker’s strength and force, and use the window of opportunity to run, or to push them away to do this. Or to do the kind of move shown at 0:21 to 0:23 (it was in response to a punch, but we cut that bit out), doing the technique in either a friendly way (shown here) or not so friendly. Depends on the situation. But often, yes, you may need to go straight into the attacker’s centre, his body, and break things, hit hard, twist, throw, if possible incapacitate within 2 or 3 seconds. That’s part of it too. In this case, tuishou can help create the opening and the flow to enter and issue energy in the right places - using whole body strength, which also comes from the relaxation. So you keep flowing, keep responsive, don’t get stuck when stressed and maybe even shocked yourself. Then the ‘pushing hands’ takes place in maybe half a second, no more, as you receive and/or bridge and/or evade. -- Of course, you have to train that way too, with partners attacking you with increasing speed (wear protection, glove up...). So you can overcome the freeze, get the experience, trust in softness when the other person is not soft. I train this way too sometimes, even though other aspects are more rewarding for me in the long term. Best wishes.
