Ashley and I are back today for video two of our trek on the Trans America Trail - this time around Deals Gap, in North Carolina. Although yesterday proved to be almost a complete bust, we are sticking to it and hoping to find some dirt today so we can put my Africa Twin and her BMW F 800 GS to the test for the first time on this trip.

Fun times watching from Alva OK end of 23 start of 24 on the TAT. Those roads make me want to get on my H-D RGU and go find some twistys. Always enjoy your travels no matter the means. Safe travels!

Way too cool! We enjoyed saying that we rode the dragon but dang it, truthfully it was just 318 curves we had to go through to finally get to the Cherohalia skyway. Now that was an awesome ride

Love Cherohala Skyway it was the first major bike trip I took from Virginia stayed in Tellico Plains TN. Enjoy the adventure. Ashley ride your ride. Very cool thanks for sharing. Your are helping those of deemed essential to escape our stress for a little while.

That part of Tennessee and North Carolina is so beautiful, always look forward to being there. Have never ridden the dragon but am making plans to do it and the other areas in September. Can't wait.

The Dragon is 318 curves in 11 miles. Some good videos on KZfaq, a lot of idiots in that road. If you are down this way, please do the Cherohala Skyway. Sweeping turns you can carry some speed into. Usually a decent drop in temp at the top. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMBza7uVm73QaX0.html

Just went down that way. From Townsend, if you go to Cade's cove, there's a gravel/dirt road that puts you out on the dragon. You miss the foothills parkway though

That's where we got married. Just outside of Robbinsville at Tapoco Lodge. It's just before you go up the hill to Deals Gap / Tail of the Dragon. I spent my first day as Mrs. Shake riding the dragon. :)

Western NC and East Tennessee are absolutely beautiful! There’s plenty of dirt across the mountain in the Cherokee National Forest. But, wise to follow GPS Kevin! You’re on an adventure of a lifetime. Ride safe and enjoy it. Thanks for these great videos and all you do for our veterans!

There are some great fire roads and lots of gravel in the deals gap / cherahola area...and the best twisty back roads! It’s a lot of fun to ride around in the mountains, but when you are riding through I guess it’s hard to stay on the dirt.

After you guy's finish the TAT and you get rested check out the Ouachita National Forest. There are lots of back roads and beautiful places to camp in Western Arkansas.

I wish I was there with y’all. I went out on my dual sport yesterday and explored dirt roads for 4 hrs. It was a nice change from riding my slim. Stay safe guys.

Your right about the Dragon. It's ok but not my favorite ride. Good advice. "Ride you own ride". I got a friend that lives in Maryville. Gorgeous riding up there. My boy Scooter in the house!!!

Agreed. For those of us in the Western NC neighborhood calling it, the road to Maryville...it is technically challenging (not really at Tenn speed limits) bit it is visually a tree tunnel. Moonshiners, Fontana Lake, The Skyway, and Tellico Plains normal roads are more stunning. Depends on what you want. Looks low volume that day, which makes it much more pleasurable for the rider not using it as a race track.

......... Also, a little further west in East Tennessee (near Oak Ridge) is the Devil’s Triangle, not much traffic compared to the gap, longer, and just as beautiful!

I drive those dirt roads on my cruiser everyday to and from work and I love it. Pace and speed is alot slower and with scenery you can't find on blacktop. Enjoy!

Hopefully there will be more dirt roads as you get further in. Of course there in the Smokies it seems like there could be some serious off roadness but I guess it depends on how it cuts through the mountains. 😎😎
