The stitch tension on your sewing machine is one of the most frustrating and confusing settings for beginners. Mainly because it works the OPPOSITE of how you think it would. Let's learn about it!

Hey SD I know my threads still from Walmart like you said so I guess it’s cheap but i don’t have money to buy expensive thread but I always buy coats and Clark 100% polyester and it’s still anywhere from 2 something for 300 yards and like 4 bucks for 500 yards, I’m on a really tight budget so I can barely afford that as it is when I need quite a few spools, but is that thread ok and also i can’t find where it says the weight of the thread and I’ve checked and can’t figure out what weight it is so I just buy it anyway.. but my mom gave me a lot of thread to save me some money, she gave me like 10 spools n the colors that I need too, but I don’t like cotton thread to much but again it doesn’t have a sticker on it that says if it’s cotton or polyester and most of them Are a little more fuzzier than mine. So I don’t know if you can tell that way I’m not sure but What’s a sure way I can tell the difference if it’s cotton or polyester if it doesn’t have the sticker on it that says what it is???

dope, dope, dope, dope video, I love this topic and great explanation! tug-o-war, bang on, perfect! I am all about my tension settings it really is what makes the difference between a professional or an amateur looking finish. I spend a lot of time testing the stitch quality on scrap pieces before I start actually working on a project. What's your favorite upgrade thread? Allow me to argue with you a bit about the internal vs external plates tho... I love the external plates on my industrial machines, I would never go back to the internal setup of the domestic machine for this. It gives you more control over the tension, which is especially important if you are running large size thread, you just have to clean them out when you do your routine maintenance on your machine, I can't speak for older machines, but pretty much any new machine with external tension is easy to repair on your own and the parts are just a few bucks. just my two cents on that one thing. and I dig your new table. no more stool for you.

Love your vids, SD. I got to disagree with you about old machines with the tension dial out front. It was made that way to be repaired. You can get the adjusters manual. I sew on a machine made in 1955. A modern machine isn't going to last 70 years. I'll give you that one might just want to sew and not learn to fix a machine, but the repairs are not as complicated as a shop will make it seem. Keep up the great content!

Ps. In what scenarios do we take apart our sewing machines? Because when things go wrong I take that plastic cover off that's left side of the tension "disks?" Also the threads hook wierd under the needle to the right of the bottom bobbin but you might've answered that question in this video because I didn't raise my foot while threading. Oops. Thank you mr awesome and hope your awesome family is enjoying some summer.

I almost never take mine apart, any sort of servicing takes place with everything together (usually). And thank you, hope you're having a great summer as well!

I sew with Lada, a vintage machine made probably in 1960s or 1970s. Tension plates are outside the body. I can and had to set the bobbin thread tension, too! That was a nightmare, but it’s over now :) and I love sewing with that machine

My wife had the same problem with her machine - a massive mess similar to a fisherman's net under the material. She battled for days that became weeks. Checked and followed the instructions of this very well known brand, in the manual to the punctuation mark. I could hear her cursing for days to the point where she would just put her foot flat and run the machine at full revs in an attempt to punish it. But nothing, absolutely nothing had any effect. Eventually I took over when she had had enough, and I tried, and did the whole process again from start to finish, even went through the tension levels in half increments - still nothing. After a few days of me trying, she then took over from me again, and so it went on, until one Saturday I could hear her battling to no end. And I fixed the problem - for good. I ran, grabbed the biggest, heaviest hammer I owned, rushed into the house and smashed that machine into tiny pieces. Then smashed the tiny pieces into even tinnier pieces. We loaded all the junk up into a box, took it into town and dumped it onto the senior managers desk at the agent. People shopping for a new machine and those who were getting practical training gasped in horror and disbelief as we explained our predicament. Most, if not all, left the establishment. I am happy to say that that particular brand is no longer available in our city, and the shop concerned has closed down for good. There is absolutely no room in the world for badly designed and engineered rubbish!

Is there a way to KNOW what the stitch tension should be set at for each garment? I remember from one of your videos, you said the numbers on the dial correlate to millimeters. Is that millimeter measurement related to the thickness of the garment as well as the stitch length? Could you measure the distance of the stitching on the garment before tailoring it and use the at measurement in millimeters to set your stitch tension? And, aside from trial and error, is there another way to know what stitch tension you need for different fabrics or is the thickness of the fabric the only variable worth considering?
@StylishDTailors
@StylishDTailors 2 жыл бұрын
So the numbers actually correspond to the degree of tension that your thread will have, not millimeters. Sorry if I confused you! And to answer your original question there's honestly some wiggle room with it meaning if you get your tension wrong you only have to change it slightly and you're good.

No... add "Lucas transmission stop slip" .I put it in three different general motors transmissions that were slipping. it works like a champ cost $30 and won't void the warranty.

"The manufacturer, they don't really trust you." Honestly, as well they shouldn't have, laughs. I think I had my machine for like. Three years before I was brave enough to look at that little dial with all the numbers and go "huh. I wonder what that does." My poor machine was probably like "oh thank the sewing gods ive been making offerings of ALL HER PROJECTS with the wrong sewing tension for years"

This happens to me too! Perhaps you can pull the upper thread (the one that goes through the needle) slightly longer than you think you need. I usually pull about 6inches past the needle 😬
