Tail wheel Training Endorsement: Flying Lesson # 1 | Citabria | Camden (YSCN)
Well, I'm pretty excited about today's lesson! I'm up at Camden airport (YSCN) in the south-west of Sydney and about to experience a number of flying firsts. Not only will I be flying out of a new airport at a new flight school with a new instructor, but it will also be the first time I will have flown in a controlled airspace environment.
However, the main reason I'm here is to fly the impressive Bellanca citabria with the aim of obtaining my tail wheel endorsement.
I've read up on tail draggers, there quirky ground handling characteristics and the dreaded 'ground loop', so I must admit I'm feeling a little nervous about today's first lesson. But I have also read that tail draggers will make you a better pilot - which sounds good to me.
So with that said, lets jump into the cockpit and find out what all the fuss is about .....
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL) in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra, and also at Camden (YSCN) with Curtis aviation in the Citabria.

My son soloed a glider on his 14th birthday and wanted to solo a Cub on his 16th like I had. He had perhaps 75 hours in gliders and another 25-30 flying with me in a variety of airplanes including a Super Cub and a Luscombe. When the appointed day arrived the Super Cub was down for an annual and the only taildragger available was a Citabria. Three landings in it and the instructor got out. He also got his glider private ticket and his driver's license.

The classic Jim Drinnan guiding you through lesson 1. I did my PPL with him, legend. Your radio prep is a great example to new pilots in controlled airspace well done.

Little trick we do when starting the citabria is to lock the stick back with your right elbow and then use your right hand on the throttle and left hand on the starter. It feels a little weird at first but it's good way to keep the tail pinned and stop the controls flapping around during start. It helps cement the idea of stick back when taxiing and on roll out. Nice work on the class D procedures for a first timer too. It's been quite a while since I've been into Camden or Bankstown

Good tip Dave. Ill try and remember that next time. I had my first aeros lesson a couple of weeks back in the Citabria. Nothing too exciting - stall recovery and wing overs. Next lesson will be rolls. One day I'll be up in that Cap10 with 5 point! Want to get my tail wheel and basic aeros up here at Camden first.

3 controls: 6 chores: 1) Elevator controls PITCH. 2) Rudder controls YAW in flight & alignment on approach with, direction on the ground. 3) (Makes an airman) Ailerons control ROLL in flight, DRIFT on approach (from xwind) & direction on roll out, with YAW (assisting the failing rudder as relative wind fades & goes to x wind component.) Elevator one chore. Rudder two jobs. Ailerons three aerodynamic functions. PICTURE a Xwind touch dn on one wheel and freeze that frame....all 3 controls, working together, in concert & all 6 chores being exercised at one time. Tail winds to all. CFI Bud 1507987 since 1960
