LEARN TO FLY | Jabiru J230 Check Flight | Crosswind Circuits | Audio
Today I go flying with a different instructor with the aim of getting a final check flight in the Jabiru 230. This is the plane I hope to do a lot of cross-country flying with in the future. Its pretty similar to the Jabiru 160/170 that I did most of my initial training in, except it has a slightly longer fuselage and an extra 2 cylinders. This means it cruises a lot faster and climbs much quicker.
Lets go flying....
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra:

Great to fly something different and the 230 is a nice beast to manage. You seem to have the power management under control. That will save the float and bounce that can accompany a slippery aircraft. And a change of instructor is always interesting...so much experience to be had. You start with no experience and lots of luck. Your job is to gain the experience before you run out of luck...LOL. Keep up the learning..

I'm flying 4 different aircraft at the moment with 4 different engines. Its a bit of a struggle at times but thoroughly enjoyable. On the other hand, it must be nice to just fly the one type of aircraft consistently and get to know it characteristics intimately.

I am constantly amazed at the way people who build houses under the flight path of an airport (Wollongong Airport was built in 1942 by the RAAF), then complain about the noise and demand aircraft modify their flight operations often compromising safety. They then campain for closure or resticted operations at the airport. These people are plainly stupid, and deserve NO sympathy! Government officials who approve these developments need to be held accountable. There have been many fatalities because aircraft in difficulty have NO WHERE to go. I also meant to say GREAT VIDEO!

Great stuff Richard. You love the xwind :) landings were great. I need more practice. I've been too easy on myself and chasing it down the runway.

rbrdly Your right...I love landings! It's easier to think that every landing is a crosswind landing. Regardless of the wind, every landing is the same.... rudder to keep nose straight, aileron to control drift.

This instructor seems pretty easy to get along with from what i see and the 6cyl engine seems a lot smoother than the one you did most of your training in. Maybe this is easier to fly i reckon. Enjoyed watching this one, with every landing executed nicely. Thanks

nice flying. it looks like newer 230s with improved tailwing flies a lot more stable your CFI is wearing military pilot gloves. maybe his hands sweat a lot. he definitely loves flying. i like his comments when you nail the landings wow thats a big lake. must be a good place to fish at

First time flying with Ned. Always good to get a different perspective and you always learn something new by going flying with a different person. Yeah Ned is very complimentary with the landings. There were a couple there that I didn't think were that great but the conditions were challenging that day.

He builds confidence. the jabiru 230d has better flying characterics with the new tail section also the 3300 engine is safer after the CASA incident there. I am looking at the pipestrel sinus flex. it can also soar. its good that you are expanding to different kinds of aircraft. ned must be a veteran. military pilots always wear those gloves

AWIS and CTAF are different freq...how many radios do you have..

The advise about takeoffs on 08 and landings on 26 unless operationally required are because of "noise abatement" recomendations. As a pilot, I would decide my runway based on most safe operations. "Noise abatement"? They should have thought about that before building there. Shell Harbour (Wollongnong) has been in existance since 1942!

There is also limited options if you have an engine failure after takeoff on 08

Good video! I'm currently training in a Czech Sportcruiser. I was curious if you have flown the SC and could note some of the best features between it and the Jabiru. I like the look of the SC, but I think the Jabiru would be a better fit for the wife in I. Especially getting into it and more room. Anyone? Thank you

Never flown one but I have seen one up close. Like you I think they look fantastic. My instructor did prefer the Jabiru to fly though.

I am looking for ANY information I can find on the Jabiru 2200 Calypso. Do you know how it compares to this J230? Do you have any first-hand knowledge on the Calypso? Is it suitable as an ab-initio training aircraft? Can a Rotax 912 be put in it? Do I understand correctly that this aircraft has a 25 hour oil change cycle??

Love the Jabari, too bad no center yoke or stick. Crossing your body to control flaps, heat etc seems very strange.

I always found that a bit awkward too. You get use to it and the center yoke pretty quick though.

Actually, the center (I.e., between the seats) mounted stick would be my 1st choice. 2nd place would be a yoke (like I’m used to in Cessnas). LAST place would be stick between the legs, mine or (especially) my significant other on the right seat.

These have made a crazy creepy impact on my flying last lesson, I've been in the J230 for the past 2-3 lessons cause of winds and as soon as I got in the 230 cause I'd watched this video and ur other J170/J160 videos Bruce looked at me like he lost his last five bucks cause I didn't use the checklist lol and I was just going all "Fuel on, Altimeter set, Fuel in tanks... (Number), Fuel Pump on" etc it was so funny lol

Hey Scotty, the J230 is pretty much a 170 with a bigger engine. Same wing I think. Must be great to have your own Jabiru...hows that going for you?

Yeah I love it I got it for a great price I have some GoPro footage on my channel as I was getting used to it as I did all my training in a jabiru lsa if you like go check it out on my KZfaq channel. Oh and those landings you did were really good.

The old angry instructor was starting to cook,why did'nt he take his gloves off or better still,throw him out into the cool air at 3000ft.Just a thought!

i used a cathay pacific pilot for an instructor a couple of times a while back..key words "a few times" and never again he was like a top tier politician..lost touch in GA and people skills in most aspects fat waste of money.

Hygiene and I think those gloves are Nomex so they're fire resistant. I wear Nomex flying gloves when flying as well because my palms can get sweaty and it can get tricky especially if I'm trying to pull off a crosswind landing, besides fire resistance gives me an extra safety margin.

Romeo Juliet Whiskey not really, it is really important for you to get the right measurement for your hands and a good fitting. Most flying gloves like mine by Aero Phoenix are very thin and fits really snug, I have no issue.
