Having had friends from northern China and Taiwan, I would say that some of the northern Chinese accents (especially Beijing) sound very dramatic and somewhat aggressive when compared to the Taiwanese accents. I think Taiwanese Mandarin sounds very elegant and easy going - although sometimes I find it hard to understand when 'ch', 'sh', 'zh' are pronounced as 'c', 's', and 'z'.

When I hear my Chinese co-workers speaking and Taiwanese co-workers, I think people from China sound a little more nasal and more singing sounding. I have a co-worker from Inkou..her accent is really clear. I thought she would sound kind of like someone from Beijing because she said it's further north than Beijing, but her Mandarin is pretty clear. Not such a heavy "er" 口音。

Thanks Miss Lin. I first learnt China-style Mandarin then went to Peking to teach back in 1979, so the accent was very familiar. I already had the "er" from Scottish relatives. But from 1988 on I switched to Taiwan Mandarin. Political considerations, of course. But, strangely even after living and working in Taipei for 8 years, I still have trouble with the accent esp the differences in tones for quite a few characters. But ... I thought this was funny - a man in a supermarket praised me for my Chinese and not having a China accent! I can still do a pretty good 北京話兒 if needed. 繁體字 are much nicer, too.

Yeah my experience has been that alot of mainland Chinese speak Mandarin fast and use very unheard of vocabulary. Taiwanese Mandarin has always been more slower to me, and despite using their own slang, their word usage is often common textbook words. My theory is that they developed that when Taiwanese people had to learn Mandarin after WW2. When the Kuomintang flee to Taiwan, many Southern Chinese accents stuck on and it basically became what it is now.

①I don't think Taiwanese Mandarin sounds like Mandarin spoken in Fujian Province. The average accent of the people of Fujian Province is stronger, in my personal opinion. Taiwanese Mandarin on the other hand is closer to Standard Mandarin. Also, Taiwanese Mandarin has undergone much influence of other parts (not Fujian) of China, which brings some phonological characters like "do not distinguish between 'en' and 'eng'". ②As for the reason of Mainland Chinese people tend to speak faster, I think that is because they are from northern part of China, which means that (Standard) Mandarin is probably (at least one of) their mother tongue. So they are super adapted to the fast speaking rhythm. ③Malaysian accent sounds really different to me. The most obvious difference is that they tend to speak the 去声 tone in a flat way, which sounds weird. Also, they tend to use a huge amount of English words and words from other languages, so sometimes it is a bit hard for me to understand Malaysian Chinese Mandarin. Taiwanese accent is much more easier to understand. ④It is not necessary to distinguish "in" and "ing" by speaking "ing" like "ieng". In fact, people from northern eastern China (larger than 东北, northern eastern also includes 华北东部 here) can differentiate in and ing easily.

If you are ever looking for a good topic for newbies: pronouncing the 3d tone. It's "the vocal fry". I can't really produce that sound. I've looked at all the various videos trying to teach 3d tone. None are good. Great video as ever Ms. Lin!

Try to think of it as a sharp drop followed by a low tone that doesn't rise much.

pinyin N = N.asal pinyin NG = G.lottal English (other european languages too) doesn't make that distinction. This pronunciation drift between Mainland and Taiwan doesn't change the characters at all though right? Sorry my Zhuyin is next t nil. What I really want to do is to figure out when pictophonetic characters include both initial AND final sound clues. Some do! Is there any rule to it? Probably not. Though most all pictophonetic characters are read out from right to left so at least there's that. You love Chinese even more than I do and I am very very jealous! XD

Great accent training! Thank you all very much!!! Camera shy = "Well, my government is a dictatorship but at least its peaceful and productive". Well, there it is, I would love to say your elders know better, but nope, they are clueless. People can have good intentions but do bad things, and can also do good things despite past bad things. I am "camera shy" for similar reasons!

I don't fully understand this comment, but since Quizmaster China says "Well, my government is a dictatorship but at least its peaceful and productive", I'm guessing he is from Singapore. Of course the two ladies in the video being from the Communist China Prison State need to hide their faces. It's not really "shyness".
