Humans are not fundamentally built to be able to handle comprehending everything happening in the world, much less grapple with it. Accepting that you are - and by extension, your capacity is - finite? It's extremely important for your mental health

I also find it more useful to be more informed about issues that I hope to or actually end up being engaged with.

Yes! I’ve also found it really helpful to focus my energy locally where I can actually have some amount of power to affect the world around me. Like, can I do anything to stop atrocities that are happening on the other side of the world? Honestly, not really. I wish I could, and I give money to organizations that help, but there’s not a lot more I can do. What I can do is start neighborhood gardens, donate to my local homeless shelters, organize and participate in community events, vote in the small elections that a lot of people forget about. I can bring food to my grieving neighbors, I can call my mom and just ask how her day’s been. And I think that’s the kind of stuff that feels impactful in a way that our brains can actually grasp

I can't remember the quote or where it came from but it was something like "we might not be able to change the world, but we can work to make our part of it that bit better". And that could mean many things, from helping fundraise local charities, working to address inequalities or injustices at a local level, or it could even just being there for people in your life when they need a shoulder or an ear. And really, that's probably how big change happens, lots of little people making a change or people working to make their slice of the world better and the scope expanding over time.

A practical application that works for me is instead of jumping on social media in the morning as a way to satisfy my ADHD brain’s craving for information, I just text 5 friends and ask how they’re doing. A productive use of my must be multi-tasking mind.

That's a good idea! I try to use Duolingo in the morning or when waiting between tasks, for similar reasons

Yes! I try to do this whenever I find myself spiraling downward. So easy to get stuck in in a negative rut.

It's not irresponsible, unintelligent or uncompassionate to not want to be informed on every piece of horrible news.

This 💯. I really don’t care for fanatics who try to shame people into caring all the time. It’s not a sustainable way of activism

For myself, my desire to stay online was rooted fear. Fear that if I wasn't up to date on everything or knew how to help or be a better ally that I wasn't good enough and deserved be acosted online for any misunderstanding I made for not knowing the optimal way to respond to any given situation. I was demanding of myself mentally what I didn't have the means to do physically. My phone was dropped in the pool for a week and I finished a book for the first time in years. It felt good.

I stopped following American politics in a large way because I realised that getting angry about things that not only do I have no control over, but do not even affect me as a person living in a non-American country. Why am I scrolling through shit that only makes me feel bad instead of going out and doing something in my community? I have things I can do instead of bemoaning another stupid thing a politician who doesn't even make my laws said.

I’ll have to do that after the legislative session. This one is a doozy!

I'm a Canadian, and I have to say that American politics tend to upset me. So every once in a while, I take a break and try to catch up on Canadian politics... which can still be a bit upsetting because we have a right wing demagogue for an Opposition Leader, but somehow it's a bit less scary. He's like a 2015 Republican rather than a 2024 Republican (ie. he's all bluster but has no real power).
