House was genuinely more attached to patients in the early seasons. Hugh's delivery of "I want you to tell me your life is important to you, because I don't know!" is brilliant. Seems like he almost tears up.

I think House wanted people to prove him wrong. I think he wanted people to fight for their life, and to believe life was worth living even if he himself struggled with that idea at times. In later seasons, House was much more pessimistic and seemed to really revel in destroying people's worldview. In early episodes like this one, he fought for his patients and wanted them to do well.

I think it’s the team he worked with. He had more chemistry and more connection to Chase, Cameron, and Foreman. They were a much better fit for House. The new team sucked and the series became less enjoyable.

Actually, as an RN, I can guarantee that the cuts would have been discovered and assessed multiple times per day as part of a routine head to toe assessment. Not very believable, but then little that House does is very believable to a medical professional.

Meh, it's a tv show. No one's trying to convince anyone of its authenticity, yet medical professionals are always jumping in with "as a medical professional..." No one cares. It's a tv show.

I'm not even a medical professional, and this stuff is not believable to me, either. But then, I don't think it's trying to be. It's one of those TV shows that requires you to suspend that disbelief in favor of drama. Still, I can understand why someone actually in the medical profession would have a much harder time doing that than someone outside of it.

@@batya7 Bc he was caught cheating at school, I remember. But I’m going off of real life experience I have seen with close relatives who are doctors, and thus I know many of their friends who are also doctors, and am keyed into a lot of that type of news. It used to be very hard for a doc to lose their license. This is an old episode, taking place in the early 2000s I believe. Standards were a lot less strict and oversight bodies were much less paranoid than they used to be. They did this plot for drama, which is fine. But in real life, the odds of House losing his license over this would be low. Especially since if he did his documentation carefully, there wouldn’t be any proof her eating disorder caused the heart issue. He was the only one who noticed it anyway, if I believe. All he would have had to do was not document it.

It's more like 'We can't save everyone, so we save the ones most likely to live.' It's cold and utilitarian, and at times can border on inhumane, but that's simply the way of the world. In her case, her bulimia puts her at risk of further organ damage down the line, thus wasting a heart that could have saved another life.

But then someone who’s been doing all the right things but gets heart failure from a cold gets pushed off the list. Sometimes it’s helpful to be a damsel in distress, even when the damsel started playing a dangerous game. Also, the idea of a transplant panel with criteria for eligibility is kinda ridiculous.
