Taking a Closer Look at Beach Driving on Bribie Island

Join Dayv as he takes you on an introductory drive on Bribie Island’s beach - just an hour or so north of Brisbane, Queensland.
Dayv introduces you to tides, tyre pressures, airing-down your tyres, the use of an iDrive to reduce diesel lag in the throttle control, parking-up in the dunes and just relaxing.
It’s always recommended that you travel with someone with the necessary experience and equipment. But, carrying your own recovery tracks; snatch strap; rated shackles and recovery points; a shovel and compressor are always good for starters.
Oh... and don’t travel on the beaches approximately 2 hours either side of high tide.

Great video mate. We just did our first camp trip at poverty creek. Absolutely loved it and my yearly beach permit calls for many more trips.

Moreton Island is actually the third largest island. North Straddie is the second largest.

Many thanks for pointing that out. You are correct. The largest is K'gari (Fraser Island) The second largest is Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) The third largest is Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) The fourth largest is Bribie Island Source: fraser-tours.com

Not sure whether you're doing this or not but it's best to turn your traction control off when driving on sand as it stops the Mazda from braking the slipping wheels when the wheels are constantly slipping in sand and if you turn off your Bt50 you will need to turn off traction control again when you start up your engine. All the best

Awesome video Dayv, just wondering roughly how deep the water crossings can get at low tides? Just want to be extra cautious for my first trip. Cheers

Thanks Jonny. The crossings on the beach only happen after heavy rains and the lagoons break their banks - flowing to the sea. Generally it’s only shallow (150-200mm deep). But as with all off-road driving read the weather, ask authorities like NPWS website and check the depth before crossing. If the beach is closed you can take the inland track.

Great video! Would you recommend this beach for someone with no sand driving experience? I've heard that the sand can be very soft, we"ve got recovery gear but no mates to travel with us in case we get stuck My partner and I just got a new Ute (all stock) and want to take it out to the beach one day, we were deciding between Bribie and Teewah

Certainly. There’s heaps of people on the beach to help. Go about two hours before and after high tide. If you take the inland track, it can be tricky first time. Remember to drop your tyre pressures. Thanks

Thanks Ralph. Do you have Hema Explorer App? Good time for tides. You can drive on the beach during most of the day. You shouldn’t need to go inland - and if you do just follow the track. At the very north end are the bunkers and toilets - and camping is before that. NPWS have maps of the camp areas. There’s an Information booth as you come onto the island at w3w.co/jugglers.airliners.instructs Enjoy

Great video mate. Is it essential to have a 4wd with low range for Bribie? I have a Discovery Sport

Sorry I missed your question Cameron. The sand on Bribie can be surprisingly soft. There may be times when low would be required to get from the beach and up into a campsite. The inland track can also be pretty difficult. Perhaps go for your first trip with a mate or in a group and have rated recovery points and snatch straps etc. Recovery boards (TREDS etc) also work well. Big issue is tyre pressure (you’ll need a compressor), clearance and travel at low tide. Enjoy

Kind of a late reply here Cameron, but I personally run a T31 X-Trail (no low range and really not *that* much clearance, it's stock) up there quite often hehhe. Haven't been stuck yet, but I do travel with a group and recovery gear just in case.

We have watched a lot of these video's, today we went to Bribie, dropped our pressures, went to the beach, it was shocking with cars including us, not being able to drive safely on the beach, it was really soft from being so dry, it was not smooth like in the video's, now our car an 05 prado, is very modified, and capabale in the bush being able to tackle above average difficulty, we tried lower pressures, but the only thing that worked, off and on the throttle, to force the car to re grip the front tyres, as I said we were not alone with this....

Thanks Bobkats. Looking at the tide times for yesterday (13/11/22), the recommended travel times on the beach would have been before 8:00am and after 5:30pm - 2 hours either side of low tide. I see too that it was a fairly high tide at 1.8m.

@@bobkats Yes, Bribie can bite you on the bum. I came back from Simpson Desert once and went to Bribie - thinking ‘yeah, I’ve got this’. Yeah… nah - bogged. Take your time, traction control off and diff locks on and even drive it like a manual in sports auto mode. And let it cool if it gets hot - stop, pop the bonnet and keep it running.

would you recommend high or low range entering the beach?

Hi Mattson. Entry onto the beach from the southern end is fairly easy with a long run up straight onto the beach. It’s also pretty well compacted (usually) by other cars so high would be fine. The northern end on the other hand is a little different and may require low. But that’s probably because most people use the inland track when it’s high tide - so you entering onto soft sand. Something I did learn on my last trip across the Simpson was to drop the auto into sports mode and sit in first and go to second when needed - this prevented the auto dropping revs and going into second when I didn’t want it to.
