I've been recently reading into Greyhawk Folio and Golden box. Probably my next RPG purchases will be Adventures Dark and Deep core books and also the new Castle Zagyg book by TLG :)

Does the new version include rules for psionics? If not, how easily do the original AD&D psionics rules fit with Adventures Dark and Deep rules set?

Joe's a good guy and makes good content. I've got several of his books that I use for C&C and other retroclones. Certainly far better than Shadowdull.

I Love this game! Thank you for covering it, it doesn't get enough love. I don't really care about the whole "Gary's version of 2e" gimmick I just really like it!

I met a lot of truly great people at PAGE. The players at Frank’s table were exceptional. The creatives and vendors were great to chat with as well. Hoping to run into you and others at Rising Phoenix Game Con in April and or ShireCon in Oct.

This series looks interesting. The impetus behind this version of AD&D is an interesting "what if" and just from the brief overview seems to provide a cool rules set. I love the Greyhawk Grognard channel too. I go there for my Greyhawk fix.

Great review - love Joe’s work. If I recall correctly, Gygax said in the EN World q and a’s that he never used the Weapon vs Armor rules and it was added as a concession to war gamers. Even the DMG implies it is optional. I have played that table sporadically over the years, but my current group decided that they wanted to drop it to speed things up - we are still using weapon speed in cases of initiative ties as I like the way those rules work.

Honestly I only included it in the interest of completeness. I've used it, but only rarely.

Personally I really like it, I still remember my short sword of speed with fondness.

Most of the Gygax worshippers I've encountered that knew of his leaving, granted few and far between, couldn't say what was wrong with the original 2nd edition except that it wasn't Gary's. I don't know what the purpose of this is when 2e was a great system and kept TSR, the game, and the hobby alive 10 years longer.

I think a lot of it, initially, had to do with simple loyalty. Quite a few writers, designers and even artists left TSR along with Gary. As for an actual comparison between AD&D 1E vs AD&D 2E vs Adventures Dark & Deep, that is essentially the purpose of my deep dive series.

Really? Pretty much everyone I knew who grew up playing 1e, including me, thought 2e was bloated trash that catered to the masses and featured the worst art of any edition of D&D. DiTerlizzi is just plain awful. Tanari'ri & baatezu? Splat books galore? Three hole punched monster books? Ridiculous XP values? We all left D&D in the 90s for other games.

I think more than one thing can be true at once. As a "Gygax worshipper", I still agree that there were good things about AD&D 2e--though not the three-hole punch monster books, absence of devils and demons, and a good chunk of the artwork as mentioned by another commenter. Back then, we combined a lot of our AD&D with AD&D 2e (mostly whatever we could cobble together) and liked both games for different reasons. A lot of my players liked the different settings offered offered in 2e. An appreciation of AD&D 2e doesn't prohibit interest in Adventures Dark and Deep.
