Taking my bike on a 540-mile train ride with 86 miles of cycling: Riding in the Fens

I needed to get myself to rural Lincolnshire one weekend, to speak at a festival (Yestival!). Never having ridden the flat Fens, I figured it was a good excuse for a mini adventure.
The main adventure, taking my bike on five different trains for over 500 miles of railway. The secondary adventure, actually riding across the Fens. The final adventure, cycling 5 km through central London. Phew!

So glad you're inspired! There are some truly fantastic places to cycle here, although few as flat as this one, that's for sure. Thanks so much for watching.

Wife and I rode from home in north wales to Devon once, then got train back to Chester. Bit of a nightmare getting 2 bikes with panniers and camping gear on to high trian doors and full compartments. At Exeter the guard wasn’t going to let us on as we were delaying it trying to get on board bike rack was full but we had bike tickets booked so guard started taking other bikes off so we could get ours on! Oh what a memorable journey lol!

Haha wow that does sound tough. I bike spaces can be so hard to access that they can't expect us to not delay the train trying to get on. Especially with panniers, which most people will have if they're going far. Glad you made it in the end though, reserved spaces did give me a little peace of mind.

Yes a cycle on a train is just drama. A folder is the way to go for trains. No need to book. Fits anywhere. Can take it on buses too. Susanna Thornton cyclecamps on a folder and has videos on youtube. Some say anything south of the River Trent is South. Others that the North doesn't start till the Humber. The only hills around there are the wolds to the North that stretch from Dorset to Yorkshire. It's off the tourist trail. Some of the best secret countryside in England.

One of the best videos yet, you guys are getting really good at making these. Somehow reminds me a little of the expedition chapter in Oliver Twist where Sikes is taking Oliver out from London.

Nice video, thanks - and the route looked really lovely. I will add the Fens to my list of cycling destinations to try but will take the Brompton given its so deliciously flat there. I thought you might have shown a little bit of the festival, it is not one I’ve heard of before but sounds interesting. Did you manage to sell your stock of books ?!

Taking a Brompton is a great idea for the Fens! Yup in retrospect I should've filmed some of the festival too, I just hadn't made a plan for it and didn't know what to expect going in. But it's SUCH a down to earth, friendly festival where everyone has a similar approach to life, so I highly recommend it. I did indeed sell a few books although not all!

I travel to the UK quite a bit, but have never brought my bike for this very reason. Compared to say, France or the Netherlands, it seems like the stone age as far as cycling/transport links, and actually cycling in general. London actually looked reasonable, though! Any indication this is changing or tips?

London is really well set up for cycling, although you need your wits about you as there's so much traffic of all types, but tons of cycle lanes and cars expect to see bikes everywhere. Elsewhere...it's different depending on the area and city. Lanes in rural places can be great with low traffic and beautiful riding but on busier roads you definitely feel like you're not wanted by cars. Ebikes are changing things though, as so many more people are now commuting on ebikes instead of driving, and councils seem to be making more provision for cycle ways through urban areas as a result maybe. There are also lots of cycle routes, but many are still roads, even the EuroVelo routes, so those aren't as well designed/curated for cyclists as they are in a lot of other European countries. And yeah, bikes on trains? Pfft, it's just a lot of effort and stress. I don't think that's changing. In fact, it's gotten worse. When I was a child many trains would have 'guards vans' which was half a carriage just for bikes. So much room it was amazing. Now bikes on trains are discouraged in practice.
