In this one, after having kitted out our lovely new tandem, Aishola and I finally set off to tackle the British coastline. From my childhood home in Somerset we head towards Minehead, the official start point of the South West Coast Path. On our 65km touring bike we have everything needed to wild camp, and believe me, there's going to be a lot of wildcamping over the course of this series!

Well on a tandem you do get twice the power for the same cross-sectional area, so I guess it must be quite a bit easier than being on a single bike
@bennysh
@bennysh 2 жыл бұрын
@@castortoutnu I'm not sure. the weight plays a role here, they carry lots of stuff with them plus the weight of the bike. As a single bike rider, I can quite easily pedal these hills, using the right gear of course.

@Ed Pratt: Starting and stopping on a tandem is much easier if the stoker gets fully on the bike (I.e. has both feet on the pedals) while the pilot/captain straddles it and holds it steady. The stoker then back-pedals to bring the cranks to around "2pm" angle on the pilot's leading side. The pilot then pushes off with that foot on the pedal and sits as quickly as possible on his saddle whilst the stoker continues to pedal. Stopping at junctions etc.the pilot puts one foot down and holds the bike while the stoker remains seated and brings the cranks round ready to push off. To get off the bike the pilot puts both feet down straddling the tandem and holds it steady whilst the stoker dismounts. This technique was taught to me by Pete Bird (of Swallow Tandems). Hope it helps with less wobbly starting and stopping.

Good advice! I assume he's editing this months later... but good advice regardless!
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. They need to stop trying to "start together," and just let Aishola keep herself firmly on back and let Ed do all the work. As one rider is already ready to go, it's much easier; just the captain has to find one pedal and off you go. And with flats? Piece of cake. It's a bit harder with clipless (or toe clips), but no problem after about the 50th time. It's the way it's done. The Proper Method, Santana, Sheldon Brown, et al say the same thing. And 30 years on a tandem (on and off road, all pedals clipless) have taught me same. Technical single track and everything; I have yet to drop my stoker (knocks on head/wood!).

How was the traffic along the coast? Any problem with the drivers sharing the roads?
@gordonlangell754
@gordonlangell754 2 жыл бұрын
@@wakjagner Traffic was actually a bit better than I was worried it'd be. ODOT (the Oregon Dept. Of Transportation) has made an effort to make the Southbound shoulder wider. For probably 75% of the Oregon coast, the Southbound shoulder is >3ft (>1m) wide. So for most of the trip, sharing the road was a non-issue, as we had our own lane in effect. Other than a couple sketchy tunnels with nearly non-existent sidewalks, and the occasional rude/stupid driver, it was pretty smooth sailing!
@Se0what

@@wakjagner did it a month ago and it's legit. not one bad experience. all the older folks with big rvs all have ebikes and seem to have more empathy. but I've heard getting yelled at everynow and then does happen.

You two are such a great team. Thanks for sharing your stories and positive spirits. As a tandem tourist I empathize with the effort of climbing hills. Do you have the lowest approved gearing acceptable for the Rohloff hub? Don't remember what it is off the top of my head. I have a Rohloff on my solo touring/gravel bike and since I am a lighter than average rider I chose to install lower gearing than Rohloff recommends. It is so helpful on a loaded bike. On my tandem I have a 20t front ring and a 34t rear cog on 26" wheels. With that we are able to ride virtually all paved hills.

Fantastic watching you cycling very beautiful but challenging terrain that my wife and I have also cycled on our Thorn tandem, from Minehead through to Porlock weir toll road though thankfully we cycled down that road I recall it being quite a rough road. Pity you didn’t video the decent down into Lynmouth but I guess you both needed to concentrate as it’s thrilling and scary at the same time. Having tried cycling out of Lynmouth up that 25% road we found pushing the tandem up the path that follows the cliff railway up to Lynton A better option.

Another tip: instead of spending a fortune on photographic material, consider to forget camping and rent some rooms. You would avoid rain, cold and mishaps like the camping stove one.

I remember going up and down that hill in Lynmouth by car and that was scary enough, at a 1in4 gradient it is extremely steep and impossible to cycle up with all that extra weight on the tandem. Happy trails guys.

I have the same pedals as you and found that only the diagonal toe straps from Restrap fit without issue (“normal” ones are for more square pedals) - you can attach them using the studs on the pedals!

Props to you two. Aishola is impressive, her english is improving rapid. And I don't know many girls, who would go on such an adventure :)

And her wonderful accent is coming along quite nicely as well. Much more British than when we were first introduced to her.
