I have a question, does the F-14 have the option for a 'dogfight mode' where Fox 2 is on a button and guns are on the trigger like the F-16 does? It would surely avoid incidents like the one that happens here...

While I know a lot of pilots don't consider heavily practicing non-tracking high deflection snapshots to be incredibly reliable or valuable. I think they have a definite increase in value when having to go up against a vastly superior aircraft, as those tiny snapshots may sometimes be your only option to survive the fight.

This is no surprise ;) Back in the day when I was in the service, the USAF and Navy flew against each other in exercises near MCAS Cherry Point. The Navy flew the F-14 and the USAF were flying the F-4E Phantom II out of Seymour Johnson AFB. 1:1, the old Phantoms consistently beat the Tomcats. If the Tomcats had their wings swept, they couldn't turn with the Phantoms and when the wings were extended, they couldn't maintain energy as well. I think it would be awesome if you could re-create that matchup in DCS :)

I still watch this one when I need a good laugh. The squeal GS does when he thinks he shot down the Fellon then gets smacked by the Archer followed by the storm of beeps during the ejection! So damn funny!

@@Jacksonflax The Navy was also getting sick of it too due to the maintenance costs and the Phonenix was an expensive monster whose hype was greater than its performance. The AMRAAM gives you far more bang for the buck. Especially the D model and the Super Hornet can carry more AMRAAMs than a Tomcat can carry Phoenixes.

@@Stinger522 That's why I said the "Airframe" could still be capable. Congress and the navy thwarted down any idea of a modernized tomcat. The ST21 likely would've been an absolute animal. Hell If the navy had shown more interest in it the probably could've made improvements to the wings and wing sweep mechanism and cut down on the maintenance significantly. I personally don't feel like the technology of the time was able to catch up to the capabilities of the F-14s airframe. Just my opinion though.

Tomcat was 1970-1992. My favorite fighter jet and IMO, the "sexiest" plane ever made. Three things made Top Gun so iconic. It had the perfect: 1. Lead Young Actor. 2. Soundtrack. and 3. Fighter Plane. The F-14 was the true star of that film.
