Lyrics:
Lay your hands into my head, I've been rude
I don't care what you do
So much heart is not enough, I've seen few
Who treat me like you do
My foolish friend
Don't try to live my life
Upon this weary line
My foolish friend
Don't tell me if I'm right
Teenage tears the saving grace of this fool
But no one's watching you
Save this mirror for your face where there are two
No matter what you choose
My foolish friend
Don't try to live my life
Upon this weary line
My foolish friend
Don't tell me if I'm right
When my chameleon mouth
Is already studded
My foolish friend
Don't try to live my life
Upon this weary line
My foolish friend
Don't try to live my life

Saw them play in Hannover around 1985, touring with their It's My Life album. Great concert. Perhaps the best concert I ever saw. Warm-up band didn't show up, so the boys came out at the beginning of the concert when the warm-up band was supposed to play and told the audience that they were sorry about the warm up band, but would it be okay if they just played a longer set... I just remember Mark coming out with long hair covering his face and a pair of dark sunglasses, singing those long drawn out notes which he did best, and wondering where the new wave image from their previous All you wanna do is Talk Talk video had gone. Then the long keyboard intro on Such a Shame with all of the re-historic animal sounds played at volume 10 throbbing out before the skidding sound brought keyboard back down to a simple drum beat and Hollis bellowing out the opening with the line "Such a Shame". When it's happening in front of you, sometimes you don't even know how great it is until it's far into the past...

The song was written by Hollis and Brenner but finally recorded with Phil Ramocon (appears in the video as the black guy in the factory) who was intended to become the new keyboard player. The song was planned to be lead singel for LP "A Chameleon Hour" which was never released because Hollis met Tim Friese-Greene and Ramocon was pushed aside although he continued as a session and tour musician.

They initially got big on the new wave and new romantic movements, before intentionally getting very avant-garde and anti-radio with their music. Mark Hollis didn't care about mainstream appeal. He was in it for the art of songwriting and making great albums. The trilogy of Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden, and Laughing Stock is one of the greatest transformation periods of any musical group. They became more than just a pop band. They became a truly unique, singular band.

I grew up in the 80s and had no idea how good Talk Talk was. It took Mark's passing to cause me to dig deeper into their music. Before, I only knew the 2 hits, Talk Talk and It's my life. Such a Shame is now one of my favorite songs by any band.
