The song 'Renée' reminds me of the 70s, being a 17 year old girl waiting for my boyfriend to come along, while he was doing gigs with his band and having fun. -"and face up to the truth, -I'm fooling you"... Having heard this song over a hundred times, it can still make me cry, as so many other music of Mark Hollis and Talk Talk can, which to me stays incredible: only Bach does that too. 'Renée' as one of Hollis' earlier songs, and the last one he ever sung in the open at their very last concert, must indicate how much it meant to him.

I saw them in 1986, superb. Lee harris lived in my close about 6 doors away. Paul Webb and Lee went to the same school as my stepbrother and also subsequently my daughter too. Paul Webbs close friend who also went to the school is Snowboy (famous percussionist). The venue where Mark first met Paul and Lee is about 3 miles away. At the same time about 3 or 4 miles away in the other direction Depeche Mode began their careers, as did Yazoo and Ailson Moyet. It was a great time for local.music. For me the stand out is always Talk Talk, although I also like Depeche alot too. I've followed Talk Talk since the start and I'm 52 now and I still love them as much now as I did back then. So sad about Mark. There is an excellent book out about the band and they are releasing soon a book just about Mark Hollis, I have this.on order too. Love your channel especially the Talk talk ones makes me laugh when your face lights up at different points in the song. You should also watch them live at Montreux few videos on KZfaq. You will not be disappointed. All the best to you and all Talk talk fans.

At the gig in Hammersmith Odeon London in 1986. Mark Hollis announced “I know this won’t interest any of you. But this is one of my favourite tracks”. Early demos exist on KZfaq from around 1981. The same lyric but different tempo and synth arrangement.

There exists an amazing live recording of the Talk Talk London Show 1986 (I probably don’t tell anything new to most people here), which ends with Renée. Only eight tracks, all perfect. The record was released in 1998 only, when Talk Talk had long finished, and „Rolling Stone“ wrote: „Only god knows out of what vault they saved this masterpiece“. Great song from a great band.

A truly awesome slow-burner of a song. There's power and menace wrapped in a rather sedate instrumentation. It also showcases the wonderful sense of space and not crowding a listener out with too many notes all being lobbed at her all at once, that Talk Talk are masters of. Everything is measured and arrives when it needs to arrive.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Talk Talk It's My Life replaced that Bon Jovi song in your mind. With synth sounds as with all music it's best to be open to different things. Darker sounding synth music was more in the first half of the 80s. Some British 'pop' hits could have a sadder sound to them even if danceable.

Renee is an absolute masterpiece. They used to play this one as the last track on their concerts from 84-86. Be sure to check out a live version here on youtube (for example this one in London 86: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gpx2lJeJtdCalGQ.html). You're right that even in their first two albums there is something very artistic in their early works, something that makes them a very timeless and remarkable band. Mark Hollis said he wants to make music that you can listen still decades later and I think he was very successfull :) I'm interested in your reaction to "Tomorrow Started", also a very outstanding song. Be sure to check a live version of that one aswell when you listen to it. (The version from London 86 for example is an amazing performance)

There's a theory I've heard that the first and last songs on Laughing Stock (Myrrhman and Runeii), are somehow connected to their earlier songs, Mirrorman and Renee. Sort of makes sense. Renee is such a good song, it's worth returning to, such a sad song. "Throw the ace and face up to the truth" reminds me a lot of the end of the National song "Secret Meeting" which has a line like "I'm drawing aces then folding", which is again, extremely sad.

"...not the same old synth-pop" Exactly right. I mean right away, the fretless bass is a dead giveaway. Likewise the key changes and tempo changes. The standard synth-pop bands of the time weren't doing that sort of thing. With this album Talk Talk became a synth-pop band for musicians, and for people who paid attention to subtleties. It says something that the record's poppiest song became their biggest hit -- that's the sort of thing most people were expecting at the time.

Hey JP I love your reactions and observations. I arrived into music via Glam Rock/Pop and eventually found my feet as I approached my teens through the discovery of Electronic Music my first big exposure being Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene. So what I'm trying to say in relation to your comments about Synth Sounds is that with me I was and still aim extremely into the sound and the textures what I call Soundscaping. So the use of particular analogue sounds and how they work musically. You can hear it on Talk Talk's first album but I think this album makes much better use of that spatiality that Mark Hollis was exploring .. the room for music expressionism. That there was the space to hear every note in isolation and combination.

Talk Talk used the Roland Jupiter 8 a lot on this album. As 80s synths go, Roland's Jupiter 8, Sequential Circuits' Prophet 5, PPG Wave Computer, and the Oberheim OBX were my favourite. Least favourite was the Yamaha DX7; hated it though it became very popular around 1986. By then, Talk Talk had largely abandoned synthesizers on their albums.

@@sevensolaris Yeah, no, Berlin's 'Pleasure Victim' album (containing the song "Masquerade") was released in 1982. Yamaha didn't release the DX7 until 1983. Hi JP. DP from UK. My advice is: Walk Away Renee! That is, if as I suspect the song is about a young girl being sexually groomed by an older man. Whatever, it's melancholy and moving, and is perfect for Mark's emotive singing. You're right about the dramatic chorus - just wait until we get to the title track! While Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden are my favourite TT albums, this ranks higher than the experimental Laughing Stock for me. P.S. my song ref above, Walk Away Renee, is by the Four Tops.

One thing to look for are Talk Talk IN CONCERT rather than only their albums. IMO (audio issues aside), their concert sound was actually better than their album sound. This is especially the case with the song "Does Caroline Know". On the album it sounds almost trivial; in concert, their instrument arrangement has more of an impact.
@gog583

I can relate to being drawn, or more in tune, to certain sounds. There's a song by "Lunatic Soul" called "Suspended in Whiteness" that has, for lack of better way to put it, since I'm not sure, kind of a synth-bells sound about 1/2 way through. It's a really good song but I think the addition of the bells sound, makes the song just so much better!.🔔🔔

Talk Talk's "It's My Life" is one of my favorite songs - ever. Although, I must confess that I was already accustomed to the U.S. 12" mix before I ever heard the album/single version. So I was kind of disappointed with the album version as it sounds like a radio edit of the 12" - which I know is not the case. Anyway, if you like the 3:55 version , you should definitely check out the 6:02 version. I know, why not do both. A comparative reaction. Sure, like you don't have other things to do.

After they stopped, to my surprise and excitement, PB came outside for fresh air. I couldn't help but to "bug" him. There was know one else but him and I there. I told him my band used to actually cover Tinseltown and Stay. He was impressed that someone in the Texas would do that. He is a very positive person and talked to my about chasing my dream. He invited me after the show to come back stage and meet the band. During their show there were chairs in the floor of a venue that never has chairs in the floor. I remember only me and a couple of women wo d get up and actually dance. A couple of guys were playing to sheet music. It was and incredibly classy show. I told him one of my band mates lived in Atlanta and was coming to see them. They were going there next and he said to tell my friend to approach him and mention this encounter. This was my favorite musical encounters I ever had. AWATRTops is still one of my favorite albums.

Some of the musical effects seemed to have influenced Portishead.

One of my favorite Talk Talk songs. So much emotion in Mark’s voice. When I hear certain synth sounds I know immediately which band played them. Some sounds I love but some I can’t stand.

Early Talk Talk were not considered cool: too moody and melancholic. Most people were crazy about Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Wham! and similar. To each their own, I guess.

@@ashyclaret that’s why my responses to the Duran Duran JP reactions are steeped in resentment which I’m trying my best contain. Better to let it all out though? The continuous exposure to Rio ,view to a kill and wild boys videos made me quite bitter I’m sure! I’m also surprised Simon LB’s vocal style isn’t analysed and brought into question. It’s just dawned on me, almost every singer has certain quirky features that if isolated would drive me mad: PC’s occasional nasal whine Sting Stephen Duffy’s atonal jazz Hollis’ and China Crisis’ nasal blurs Gabriel’s ethnic grunts Geddy & Burke ( God blessed him ♥️) Neil blinkin young Even the voice of Paul Buchanan goes off at times i have to admit! Dylan, Bob is so off it’s Comforting Actually maybe David Bowie has one up on all the others here? How about Tony Hadley? He suffered because he had to sing: Why do i find it hard to write the next line? Probably the worst line ever in a pop song but I’ll Fly for You more than makes up for it.. Tom Waits Rod Stewart Billy Mackenzie Bono The sadly departed singer of The Sound who escaped me up until a month ago Even Judie Tzuke’s downward lazy descending crescendos grate. Joni on blue has improved over the years but it took some gettin used to . So in summary, yes beauty spoke louder than words in the early pop days of 1985 when the post live aid markets flooded the economy. Still our favourite singers above still inspired Andy Bell Alyson Moyet Gahan - no couldn’t cope at all Nor Ian Astbury of the Cult Boy George was trilly in places too Cathal Coughlan pretty much sums it all up both vocally And Lyrically Thanks for enduring my waffle. Excellent brain partial recall trainin. 🐩

Oh dear, oh dear. A great example of peaks, and troughs... After the dizzy heights of Neil, YMO, and Budgie, here we are plumbing the depths with talk talk. A monotonous 6 minute snoozefest.

@@Katehowe3010 In a nutshell, I always found them samey, and uninteresting. Deffo the first 3 albums. And re one of my earlier (unfavourable) comments about them, someone else said similar to what you've just noted. If i didn't like those i should try the last 2, more experimental they said. So I gave 'Spirit' a listen, and against all odd's i did like that one! Not sure i'd have said remarkable, but much better than i expected. I've still to listen to Laughing Stock yet,. If i remember right, i'd just put the 1st track of LS on, and something came up, and i had to leave it. It is on my play list though.

@@Katehowe3010 Hi man! First - I always want the Niners to lose. I'd root for them if they're playing the Patriots (Brady-era) - that's about it. Second - Renee - Talk Talk - a nice tune - a nice melody but the song only goes as far as the singer takes it. We all like certain voices - there's probably no way to accurately gauge how and why we like the singers we like. As for Hollis - his vocals ......hmmm..... just don't make me want to hear him. He may be a genius - a brilliant songwriter - a great instrumentalist - or all of the above - but as a singer - he just doesn't get me excited. That's what some say of Hammill - if the listener can't appreciate the singer - it's pretty hard to like that song or artist.
