I feel like I've known this track all my life and it has simply been there, always there. And, the album being released 7 months before I was born, I guess it has always been there, from my personal perspective. I can't say why I like it so much (apart from its being a part of the Talk Talk story, of course) but there's something about that drumbeat, the delightful little breaks, the crazy trumpet solo that feels like it could break out of its bounds at any moment, and Hollis's melancholy singing sounding like he is accepting and then telling us that things are the way they are... they combine to make me stop whatever I'm doing and I must listen to it with rapt attention whenever this track comes up on a "shuffle-play some random songs I like" binge. Yes, I like this a lot.

Talk Talk is one of my favorite bands. I prefer their Synth stuff best. Mark's voice is awesome and so unique, he could sing the phonebook and I'd love it. His voice is the reason I bought all of their vinyl. I also love the drummer, Lee Harris, especially on the 1981 - 1984 songs. These guys are all extremely talented and are perfection to my ears.

Talk Talk was one of my favorite rock bands of the 80's along with Tears For Fears and Simple Minds. You nailed it. I was a teen and in my early 20s in the 80s but never paid Talk Talk much attention. I liked "It's My Life" and thought the video was goofy, but that was about it. However, within the past couple of years, I've actually "discovered" them in my old age, and I think this band was way way WAY ahead of its time. Their album "Spirit of Eden" is simply amazing. There is so much depth and substance to their music.

You wanna hear from others about what you just have experienced. Yes, I did as well so many years ago. And it is still sounding as fresh and soothing. The composition, that strong, and carried so beautifully by the original instrumentation. On top of that Mark's authentic sound and intonation. Indeed, a perfect song. I was in my teens at the time (born in '69). The successful singles "Its My Life" and "Such A Shame" I liked, but didn't listen to the whole record much. When "The Colors Of Spring" came out in 1986, I was just able to affort a good walkman and good headphones, which was a big step for me then. This record was just fantastic driving to school by train/subway. Just listen to " Happiness Is Easy" and ... I've loved it ever since. So I went back to "It's My Life" and found this masterpiece here. It definitely is top three to me. (Live Montreux or Hammersmith). PS: I've seen that you did some Cream reaction. Try Jack Bruce's solo work. You'll like it. There are so many, but..."Rope Ladder To The Moon", "Folk Song", They Invented Race".

To me, the life of Talk Talk and Hollis is a story of metamorphosis. In nature, what different types of metamorphosis have in common is that each stage is irrevocable. The caterpillar develops into a butterfly and there is no turning back. Talk Talk and Hollis have done exactly that, leaving their mark all along, advancing further away with each record. Japan has taken a similar path that leads to the _Rain Tree Crow_ album, but Talk Talk will always remain unique, in a lonely place. The story ends with the solo release of Hollis, in silence.

My suggestion: after reacting to the Talk Talk albums, for your own benefit, watch their live concerts - the one from Montreux 1986 for sure, but I like all of them (though some of the vids on youtube could have better sound quality). Many of their songs are much better live (notably "Does Caroline Know" - I kept wondering why they didn't do it that way on the album.)

Hi Justin, As you love Talk Talk, I think you may like a contemporary band named The Besnard Lakes who have a similar vibe while erring towards a more alt rock, reverby guitar style. Check out their beautiful single, Necronomicon (the video is stunning too) and The Plain Moon.

Tomorrow Started is the very best of many fantastic songs by Talk Talk. I remember hearing the song talk talk for the first time, I was 12 and completely blown away. In the car with my dad on the way home from U13 Sunday morning football. My love of Talk Talk started instantly. There has only ever been 2 albums that made me just say “WOW” Talk Talk’s The Party’s Over and Dexys Midnight Runners debut album Searching for the young soul rebels. You must do some Dexys, I think you would enjoy it.

Great review brother..... just wait until you get your ears around "Colour Of Spring", "Spirit of Eden", and "Laughing Stock" - the troika of true music!! There's a cool link here - Danny Thompson played upright bass on "Happiness is Easy", then on "Spirit of Eden" - also on Nick Drake's seminal "Five Leaves Left" and a long time collaborator with the late, and very great John Martyn......AAAND....(you'll like this) -Danny's bass stitches together what, in my humblest opinion, is quite probably the finest song recorded in history - David Sylvian's "Orpheus".

Close. So close. Yet the one that won me over was It’s getting late in the evening. A deeper less whimsical vocal and probably their best ever b side!

An impossible task of course. Yet one day the list will appear here. Safe to say ‘ It’s Getting Late in the Evening’ is guaranteed top seven status, no let’s narrow it down even further, Top 4. Glad I’ve put that to rest for the time being. Beatles Reunion Blues anyone?

This song with Renée on the first side are really beautiful, dreamy and emotive. This album is the perfect blend of artistic quality on good catchy songs. After the album that have follow this one, The Colour Of Spring, they lost that sense of catchiness for their music for only artistic songs.

I find that whatever the song, Mark Hollis always sings the same way, which makes me feel like I'm always listening to the same track. For this reason Talk Talk is a band that never captivated me. except for a handful of songs on their debut album.

Can I just throw a suggestion out there JP. From roughly the same time. Latin Quarter's Modern Times LP , is an intriguing listen. ' Radio Africa '- a minor hit single in the UK , is a great slice of Reggae/Rock , with hard hitting lyrics that spread across the whole album. 👍👍

‘No rope as long as time’ indeed. I bought the third album on cassette recently ( don’t ask... well ok, for 50p in a bargain bin ) and i regret forgettin about them after the second album .... what was it called...Michael & Miranda ? ... no that’s The Passions.. hold on .. too many rabbitt holes... stick to Latin Quarter here!! ‘Radio Africa’ should be heard for starters. It’s aged very well. Now who’s that you say? The Blue Nile? - From Rags to Riches next please! China Crisis? - Christian... Well, yeah. Too good to neglect. I could lose myself in this honesty. Sorry i lost track where i was ramblin ... forgot i was replyin - thought i was just commenting..

Being a teen in the 80s, like for all of us, the place, time, atmosphere was part of the music. It was a great time and creative like Talk Talk were.. pity the 60s 70 80s and dance of the 90s has mostly left creativity resting on clasping at past musical peaks to remain interesting. Little today captures creativity with a great time in history (which this ain't baby). Being a Talk Talk fan from back then is a stroke of luck and sorry if you don't get it.
