Welcome back to Talking Dragon Age, the show where I talk about Dragon Age. Today, we talk about the Scaled Ones referenced in the The Chronicles of a Forgotten War codex found in the The Descent DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition. This took longer than I thought it would to finish. I kept having to restrain myself from going off on too many tangents, especially during the part where I talk about the suspects. But I do have plenty of ideas for videos left, so stay tuned.
If you have any suggestions on ways to improve the show or theories I could cover, please leave comments or message me directly.
Thank you to FluffyNinjaLlama and ReinaDCD for providing video and audio for this episode!

In DAO ruins where the werewolves live, there are aggressive skeletons with a horse's head. Maybe it's the Scaled Ones?

I believe it’s more what Cassandra said. Including the fact about the drawings at elven ruins. I doubt it’s the fex or kossith. Looking at the kossith perspective, they’re the original race of the qunari and Cassandra or the dwarfs didn’t mention horns.

Severy Yes it does XD I actually just made a video for the Qunari and kossith where I go over that idea. But the problem I find is that the Qunari don't have scales. So if they were the scaled ones who were then experimented on with dragon DNA, why would their scales vanish?
@Severy
@Severy 7 жыл бұрын
I watched it. Well, taking the long time period into account any maybe the percentage of females and males, it can be that males had of the highest percentage (simular to High Dragons only being female). As such males mated with other races (Kossith or maybe Humans or Avaars) and through out generations the scales became less and less common (Simular of some Qunari being Hornless ). Also it can be an adjustment to the invorment they lived in.

@@TheKingdomEntertainment didn't iron bull or maybe a codex say something about them being Savage? Maybe I'm totally wrong on that one, but if it is right, maybe the qunari are bred descendants of the created scaled ones. The experiments with infusing dragon blood to whatever race might have caused a gradually increasing madness and rage. The descendants, who possess the overall traits might have had this madness/rage more or less bred out of them; it would allow for the notion that the structure and order of the qun suffice to stave it off, since it's not a trait as prevalent in their ancestors, or the created ones.

I recently found a codex about the people who lived in Par Vollen before the Qunari conquered it, and it said that they made pyramids in the jungle that "do not seem to be tombs, but some chambers contained well preserved bodies," and there were murals where many of the most famous people were "tall and horned." No scales mentioned, but it could be an interesting piece of the puzzle. These could be either Kossith or Fex. I found the codex in the secet study under Skyhold, it was called "The Pyramids of Par Vollen," if anyone wants to check it out.

It could be! You know how people theorize that Kossith are what happens when you cross elves with dragon blood? Maybe Scaled Ones are the same extent of what happens to a human on way too much dragon blood. Or maybe they too were once elves, experimented on. A first attempt "perfected" in the creation of the Kossith? Corypheous's line stands out: "Your race is not a RACE, it's a mistake!" So maybe it's the other way around: the Kossith came first. Then again... why would he know that?
@shawnjohnsonjr5271
@shawnjohnsonjr5271 7 жыл бұрын
prideling well Corypheous is an old magister who claims to have breached the black city, that was in the days when Arlathan was still around. It's possible that he had a hand in their creation or learned it from the fade. But one thing that throws me off is why are the scaled ones in the deep roads? If they were reavers or failed elvehn experiments why the deep roads or Perhaps the old dwarves knew something about them.

I actually thought since I red that codex that the scaled ones were, or maybe are, Kossith. Although we don't know many things about them, we know that some of them were, at some point, attacked by darkspawn in the Korcari Wilds and dragged to the Deep Roads. I think that it could be plausible that they had some sort of connection with dragons (based on their religion similar to Avvar's one, that actually worship dragons, or at least the chances of that are very high) and that could explain the scaled skin. About the ritual I am very uncertain.. maybe they were using blood magic to breed Qunari in order to create a race dragon-blood alike to prevent scales maybe connected with Reavers madness and corruption, allowing them to return to the surface with instructions (the Qun) to claim lands? Or maybe being so close to dragons made them able to catch the Old gods chants and the ritual is actually connected with the Blight somehow? I also though once that the scaled ones could be elves loyal to elven gods retired to the Deep roads to wake the Old gods (that I strongely belive that had something to do with elven pantheon) in order to free their gods. I'm also pretty sure that someone talked about a elven civil war, and that could be between non-slaves elves and elves still loyal to their gods... Okay, just realized how much I wrote, sorry :/

Scaled would infer a dragon-ny appearance, they are large and humanoid. No one knows where the Qunari physically came from and the fact that the codex story is taking place before the first blight we are talking during the time of an intact Deep Roads. Given enough time a species sheds non-useful traits and evolves... Maybe? The Reavers seem like a sound idea as well though.

Kossith is not a race but a culture, just like Qunari is usually referring to that particular race but not necessarily because it applies to all who follow the Qun. I now wonder if Fex is the race or what they are. *Fex @ 06:16 mark etc www.ustream.tv/recorded/9386107 *The Qun is a religion, not a race, but so is Kossith. Kossith was never the race name, even though the World of Thedas book (full of errors) says it is a race. Bioware Forums pages are gone, but some people saved some of the discussion there. (near bottom of page) fextralife.com/forums/p4324785/why-is-kossith-an-inaccurate-term-for-horned-qunari-and-talvashoth/ Here are some Quotes: Qunari refers to the people of the Qun and is an ethnoreligious term like the word Jewish, which is both the race and religion and also the culture. Kossith was the belief from before, just as the Qun is the belief now, and the Qunari have almost zero memory of Kossith. Qunari is a bit like the term 'Jewish.' Jewish can mean a person who is of Jewish ethnic descent regardless of their religious beliefs, a member of the Jewish faith, or both. Likewise, Qunari refers to both the race and the religion, and the context in which the word is used determines whether it is referring to adherents of the Qun, the horned Qunari race, or both. "Kossith" is an antiquated term, not a technical one. It was used to describe the culture that predated the Qun. It may not have even been the name of a race at all. It's the equivalent of calling white people, "Occidental. - Mary Kirby" "To anyone in Thedas who doesn’t know any better, they’re all Qunari. The culture and the religion are one and the same thing."But what about the followers of the Qun who aren’t big, horned people?"Properly, they’re viddathari. But since nobody would know what that means, you can call them “elven Qunari”, “human Qunari” or what have you. They are, after all, exceptions to the rule."But what about big, horned people who aren’t followers of the Qun?"Properly, they’re Tal’Vashoth. Again, since few would know what that means, they’d just be called Qunari (to their annoyance, but they’re likely used to it)."But that’s confusing!"No, it’s really not. It’s about as confusing as “Jewish”, and insisting on “kossith” because it’s mentioned in a few codex entries makes about as much sense as insisting someone of Jewish descent be referred to as either Ashke** or Sephardim- as if that would be clearer for most people.Of course, when I bring this up I get a round of “ohhh, Gaider’s upset again.” I’m not upset in the slightest. Kossith is simply an antiquated term that would be used by neither the Qunari nor the Tal’Vashoth and has never even been heard of by anyone else in Thedas, so it’s not apt to be used in-game anytime soon. Thus people insisting on its usage as “proper” when most people who’ve even played the game have never heard of it just makes me scratch my head. It’s bizarre, particularly on the odd occasion when someone schools another fan about it- like they’re just not educated enough to know they should be confused.We’ll call them Qunari. If we feel the need to distinguish from the norm, either in terms of race or religion, we’ll do so… and the only people who’ll be confused are those who enjoy overthinking it. - David Gaider" Also this: "At -410 Ancient a group of kossith landed in the southern Korcari Wilds and established a colony. This group is believed to have been captured by darkspawn during the First Blight; the darkspawn then turned some of the females into broodmothers, and those in turn gave rise to the first appearance of ogres in Thedas.[5] A millennium after this contact, the Qunari landed on Par Vollen in 6:30 Storm. It is said the Qunari came from an eastern land across the Northern Ocean, which was likely the land of kossith as well." dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Kossith

Probably a dragon related species. Kossith are probably related to dragons and old human dragon worshipers might also be a candidate. They seem to be practicing blood magic and dragon worshipers seem to have an affinity for it.

I like the theory that the scaled ones are potentially a long lost alien race (somehere from mass effect) that crash and trapped on the Dragon age planet. Soon there guna ran out of ammo and all they had was special armour (which was probably hi tech space armour/suits) Maybe that ritual was yo return them home tge onoy way they knew how.

Great video! lately Bioware has bombarded the story with new elements, races and hidden facts which kind of feeling overwhelmed. There are A LOT of things needed answering and yet we encountered new mysteries in DA I. I hope Bioware can wrap these things up. Whatever these scaled one are they are probably tied closely to dragons. Quanaries are probably a by product of mixing kossith and dragon blood. Scaled ones are probably a different race or remnants of a different race being close to dragons. They probably are creators of Quanary or had a hand in creating them. Whatever the history was before the first blight it seems to completely unknown to this point. Titans, fate of Evanuris, Solas's plan, dragon gods and blight, forgotten ones, these things are big and DA4 is going to be so different now we know what we will face.

P.O. Square Neck This is before the first Blight, so Nevarra didn't exist yet. While there may have been reavers before that, the practice has obviously persisted for hundreds of years, meaning there should have been other mention of them since.

The Kingdom bro the practice of drinking dragon blood may have been there before Nevarra. Also think about this man, the land of Nevarra(even if this wasnt always Nevarra) is the home of the mortalitasi. Death magic and blood rituals may have always been there. As for dragon hunting and dragon blood drinking? I bet it started with the fact that there were always dragons

You scratch off the Qunari but not the Kossith at the same time? The Kossith are an early faction/nation of the horned creatures that are part of the Qunari according to Iron Bull. Although he also says they don't use the name Kossith for the race. The Qunari aren't really a race, they are citizens that follow the Qun. Humans, elves and dwarfs that do are technically Qunari when they follow the Qun eventhough they call them Viddathari.
@TheKingdomEntertainment
@TheKingdomEntertainment 7 жыл бұрын
TheLastSound I remember reading an interview or something with David Gaider about that very topic. I wish I still had the link, but it was something like this: Q: What do you call the followers of the Qun? A: Qunari. Q: What do you call the race of horned giants? A: Qunari. "Kossith" is a term only known by a few Ben Hassrath, and the term is never used for the race (also according to David Gaider). I have a theory of what the kossith are, and I'll hopefully be making a video for that soon. Someone can fact check me if they can find where Gaider said those things. I'm pretty sure they are linked as sources on the Wiki either for Kossith or Qunari. Anyway, I do appreciate the comment :)

They kind of tongue in cheek refer to the scaled ones. If you do the decent there is a krogan with an axe through his head. There is a krogan head hanging in the summer palace in Orlais. So read the codex and imagine a bunch of krogan who accidentally land on this kooky planet and come across the dwarves. Yea it's mostly a joke but who knows with Bioware writers.

Darth Portus Because Cad'Halash wasn't destroyed yet, which was way before the first Blight.
