Welcome back to Talking Dragon Age, the show where I talk about Dragon Age. In this episode, we discuss the super creepy horror story in Tevinter Nights called "The Horror of Hormak". It raises a lot of questions, provides some insight to ancient elven society, and eludes that the Mother of Halla is actually quite nuts.

The two halves/wholes wanting to be two ones sounds an awful lot like cellular mitosis and DNA recombination to me. I would hazard a guess that the hybrid things are attempts to find a viable, self-replicating combination. And like a program left to its own devices too long, we're talking thousands of years here, it's become like a corrupted data file and can't stop making new things over and over. Like a cancer. Just a theory.

The weird feeling part reminded me of the warning outside Solasan and Cole saying : "I'm afraid. It wants us to be afraid", so yeah it's without a doubt Ghilan'nain's temple...

@@dee2051 In the forbidden oasis, if you have Cole in your party the first time you go to the temple of pride. I'm sure you can find this on KZfaq somewhere 🙂.

That's exactly what I was thinking of. I think (it's been a while) even without Cole in your party it mentions something about feeling intense fear as you approach the door to Solassan, but once you unlock it and go in, that fear suddenly goes away, reinforcing that it was a fabricated experience. (It might have been in the lore notes left around the ruins that they talk about that.) But yeah, it definitely sounds like the same ancient Elvhen security system.

That fluid sounds like it could combine the DNA of elves with something awesome and cool... You know... Like a dragon... That would be cool, elves genetically mutated to have dragon horns. The nightmare demon might even refer to them as a "failed experiment" or something similar. That would be interesting :p

I love me some DA horror like the dwarven chick in DAO. There wasn't enough in DAI! This makes me super excited to see more atrocities the Evanuris and forgotten ones did.

The lead up to the broodmother, the creepy poem, was one of my favorite parts of DAO. I really hope for at least one creepy temple in DA4.

@@nicolecline8584 I hope we see one of these places but one with even more fucked up straight outa Lovecraftian Mythos Aldrich creatures...That make Darkspawn Broodmothers look more beautiful than they already are! All the while the music is either just screeching or dead whispers silent. I hope we see just how messed up in the head Ghilly and Dirth were!

@@flamesofchaos13 That might just give me nightmares. Yes please! Dirth's temple in DAI was spooky, but only if you read the notes/codex entries. A nice base, but needed more showing and less reading.

@@nicolecline8584 Dirth is connected to Ghil given a lot of details in Inquisition. I assume that they had some sick partnership going on and that they created the Darkspawn...Not the Blights though. Anyways I don't want just spooky...I want eye bleeding sickening!

This story bought me back to DA:O and its darker fantasy elements, not since the deep roads and brood mother have I been so thoroughly creeped out.

My Lavellan was named after Ghilan'nain, had Ghilan'nain's vallaslin....and romanced Solas. She just can't catch a break! I absolutely love the horror. I had actually wondered if she was some mad scientist after learning the truth about the Evanuris. I wonder if it has something to do with the creation of the qunari, too...

I just had my Elf use Sylaise's...She just likes burning things my kinda gal way better than Emo Mad Scientist Ghilly. Seriously any person that creates a spider-snake is one seriously emotionally troubled creature...I guess that's your Inquisitor's connection huh?

@@flamesofchaos13 Well now she is! Lol Nah, I gave her silver blonde hair came up with the headcanon that her clan thought she was favored by Ghilan'nain and named her Ghilana. Very creative lol

@@nicolecline8584 So she was crazy too right? Oh what am I asking of course she is. You did romance Solas after all! Also in lore that Clan is into some serious Death Cult shit now! Seriously anyone who worships Ghilly...I'm going to run screaming from! They just evil and your Lavellan is so so lucky to have gotten out alive or in one physical body! Like Ghilly is officially worse than Falon'Din and Elgar'nan now just pure unadualtered E.V.I.L (Every Villain Is Lemons)!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that a major reason Solas decided to put the veil up was to seal off the blight. Andruil brought it back from hunting in the void (plagues ravaged her land, she began wearing blighted armour as in the story) and I THINK Ghilan'nain also started messing around with blight magic. It is after all, apparently very powerful if we look at Corypheus and the Architect. I have a feeling at least some of the dwarves and the elves were allied to gain access to lyrium, and perhaps part of that was Ghilan'nain giving them access to some of her creations. Perhaps even creatures like brontos came from her, given they can literally live off rocks. But as she started messing around with the blight, perhaps she too became corrupted (if she wasn't already just evil). And now what we have is her fonts of creation, permanently blighted and corrupted still replicating out of control. Anyway, loved this story. Truly gross!

Probably a tool of Ghilan'nain she used to create new creatures. Without her there to control it, the liquid has gone wild and aimlessly creates whatever it's exposed to, or alters organisms that are exposed to it. As for the implications this would have for Thedas, I don't see how any of these major problems get solved without the Hero/Warden-Commander returning to help, especially now that the Inquisition is either disbanded, or a shadow of what it once was.

The great thing about the world of Dragon age is that it can give you a diverse amount of stories. If you're a fan of classic high fantasy good vs evil, it has that. If you love political intrigue, it has that. If you like nations at war, it has that. If you like mysterious and creepy horror, it has that too. The world is open for so many things.

I enjoy the outrage in your voice when you speak of spiders and snakes. Maybe a broodmother will dip into that liquid. Fun times. Get on the nope boat!

I love how you described this, it was both hilarious and scary. "And out came the Hurlock...'s head on a Drake's body" Also, Centipede Centaur = Centitaur. It sounds less scary lol

DAI was pretty bright and shiny--even with all the corpses, and some darkspawn, and such--compared to DAO. Yyyep. Dead Trenches quite possibly one of my favorite areas in DAO. And then there's Ghilan'nain. My siblings are still unaware of all the horrors in DA world since they've only played DAI and my sis isn't even paying attention to codex entries. I hope the giant centipede/serpent/cetus(??) thingy and the spider with hands in the DA4 behind the scenes is related to Ghilan'nain. Or at least, I hope we get to encounter some. I want more creepies. Anyway, I'm pretty new to all these soooo yea (only got into the fandom around late July this year)

The Vet Warden (can't remember his name) would make an awesome companion. Or, at the very least, a side character for a particular quest. Kinda like Hawke or Alistair in DAI

So here is one thing I'm curious on, sonthe dark spawn ingest/let the silver liquid envelop them without question, as if they are under order to do so. The only time that ever seems to happen is if a brood mother is ordering them or an arch demon. So that begs the question: who or what is compelling darkspawn? My theory is that controlling dark spawn is some what similar to indorcutation. Where there is some sort of signal that is projected to control them, but any mage or spellcaster strong enough could in theory emit the same signal to control a dark spawn. This could explain how corypheus and arch demons can control dark spawn, but how say something or someone in horrmak could in theory control darkspawn. Another possibility is that ghilanan created the dark spawn and someone is trying to evolve the darkspawn

tbh I think the creatures do need to eat, we just don't want to think about the most likely scenario: cannibalism. there are dead mix-and-match pieces of those creatures all around, right? and "leftover" body parts (tho you would have to wonder where all of that comes from, but as you say the liquid may just...crate all of that from nothing.)

Maybe the combinations are random and the bits laying around are leftover from things like 2 bottom halves combined or creations that were just an arm and a leg combined? I'm excited for the implications of this story! It's so creepy

I'm a bit late, but this sounds like a Lovecraftian horror to me. I definitely don't want to run into this in the next game. That would be terrifying.

I suggest that the red idol is actually a body of a petrified Mythal (when she was originally killed by the Evanuris) herself. I know the idol is small, but hey, that's what magic can do - all sorts of crazy things (like shrinking of her remains}. If you look closely and I know we all, did it a million times. Either that or Solas, or someone else crafted her likeness at the moment of her death or past it. Her features in the idol look very much like a face of someone who was emaciated/dead or near dead. Sounds sort of mad at first, but I keep wandering why Solas is so attached to that idol and stroking it gently in one of the stories in Tevinter Nights. P.S. We also know that elves weaponized the red lyrium and I suspect that's how they first trapped her in it and killed her. I also posted this comment on Lady Insanity's channel, want to hear what you guys think about this suggestion.

It's a good thought, but what about the other figures on the idol? There's at least one person clutching her, maybe two. And I think a snake or something?

@@TheKingdomEntertainment Well, maybe someone tried to protect her, like her high priests and were petrified with her. Although I heard people theorizing that one figure is Solas. I don't know, but I am almost hundred percent sure she was killed using red lyrium and petrified. May be someone crafted the idol afterwards, but why would Solas or anyone else want such a painful reminder of what had happened to her? May be Solas was partially petrified with her too, (that's a wild thought) and managed to escape death. I don't know, but red lyrium definitely had something to do with her death in my opinion.

This type of body horror reminds me a lot of Devilman. There is so much lore in this world, and I really hope we get to explore it all. Dragon Age has the potential to rival Elder Scrolls in regards to lore depth.

Hey Kingdom! I’m curious as to why the Harvester only ever made 2 appearances. They were obviously important enough for a dlc and for the mage to become one in da2. I wanna know more about them

@@tyx8898 Well if there's not a single bit of new info about them out...What do you expect for him to talk about? Until we learn more there's not really anything to say that hasn't been said by the majority of fans. I HOPE they come back in DA4 by the way and explain how they come to exist because evidently it's more than just Blood Magic because if it was so simple we'd see them in the events of Inquisition from Fanatical/Rebel/Tevinter Mages.

So I was just asking to see if they’re thinking about ever using the Harvesters again cuz I want more of them. In inquisition, it’s been years since the Warden AND the army of Harvester heads escaped that place,

@@tyx8898 The Horde of Harvesters would be in the Deep Roads...A very big place with plenty of food to keep them contained underground. What we need to worry about is Mages having the ability to become them on the surface. Also we now gotta watch out for these various hybrid creatures because they free roam everywhere. Also the Awakened Darkspawn need to come back into play. Also Kal-Sharok Dwarves are Blighted/Tainted who knows their true allegiance. Also Sha-Brytol if they ever leave a Titan body if they can they literally could cause a LOT of devastation on the surface...Think about it they have magical machine guns! Also there's a False Elvhen God or Seven or More that will apparently return. Also if Titans decide to stand up literally everybody is dead. I think maybe just maybe...Thedas is super fucked. Like it was one thing to combat a Blight or a Mage or Corrupt Warriors...But we're literally going to have to fight GODS, Aldrich Abominations, the LAND itself, the SKY itself. I think we just need to see this as a lost cause and whatever protagonist we play as next is literally just an insane lunatic.

I thought of that, but I think it requires someone who understands it in order to do that so efficiently. I doubt Tevinter could have done it, and it SEEMS the kossith only arrived after the elves fell. Not impossible, but I think there's something missing from this particular theory

@@TheKingdomEntertainment what if the Elves were the cause of creating the Kossith and they were used as slaves or an army for a war and after the fall of the Elves they had no direction so they created their own race/ religion they could have also been created in one place and taken to another

Although they will mess it up I think if they wanted to go back in time or play a new perspective, Tevinter or Orlais is the way to go. Both are despised but both stand for civilisation. It would also be interesting to look at the Magisterium and how they may seem sinister but a lot of what they do like the Magisters Sidereal is uncover just how evil and messed up the elves were and conclude that they need to remain disempowered and scattered lest they in their arrogance attempt any number of things Tevinter never dreamed. Part of the problem is bad acting and bad writing but Corypheus would have been a lot more interesting had it been more plain that what drives him is a terrible fear born from his venture into the black city that they might live in a world where there is no 'Big Good' like a God but that there is a lot of evil.

THIS is one of the more interesting things I've heard about the morality of Thedas being Utterly Grey. It's still racist but if it turns out that's why Tevinter attacked then enslaved the Elves it would add much needed depth to the North end of Thedas. Because honestly I wouldn't blame them for seeing Elves as savage and evil and needing to be "kept in check" if these are the kinds of things they faced daily when the tribes of men first came to Thedas. "but Corypheus would have been a lot more interesting had it been more plain that what drives him is a terrible fear born from his venture into the black city that they might live in a world where there is no 'Big Good' like a God but that there is a lot of evil. " Honestly I think that's the story they tried to tell in Inquisition but kinda failed. But that doesn't mean DA4 has to throw that idea away!
