An exceptional album. To me, this opening track is the most “difficult” song. Keep going! There are connections to King Crimson of this era. Adrian Belew plays on it as a guest , just as Robert Fripp appears on the previous Talking Heads album. Eno was involved in both albums. You should also check out the Eno-Byrne album “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” from 1981, also a highly influential album.

I've been having a major Talking Heads kick for the past week, and now this? Are you spying on me? But you should definitely do a full reaction to Remain in Light. I find it usually takes a while for it to grow on you , but it's one of the very few albums where I would say every single song is absolutely perfect.

@@JustJP I would agree with Kyle M. This album has a way of really growing on you. The baseline sound of the album is strange and not exactly inviting: jerky, with lots of rhythmic layers that don't just give it up to you easy. But--especially with the ghostly melodies that Byrne drapes over it all--it does start to hypnotize you, and the layers of rhythm that were just kinda weird before start to make sense, and all of sudden you realize you're really diggin' into it hard and don't want it to stop!

This song is just audio sticker shock: for those who don't know what to expect with this disc, this lead track is literally a stunner. But, as Side A goes on, the tracks get stronger and stronger and then you'll come back to this and this song will all make sense.

The Remain in light album was a landmark album using African music as inspirations. Fun facts: Angelique Kidjo a noted Afro pop diva covered the whole Remain in Light album as an homage as well as showcasing the authentic African root of the album.

I saw TH many times from very early on in their career. So I’m not sure what it’s like to hear this song separate from much of their canon. But certainly the entire album needs to be listened to/absorbed... Kidjo, who I also have paid attention to from early on (but only saw her live a few times) is wonderful. I love her! I saw her do the Remain in Light interpretation in one of the smaller new performance spaces (I think there are 2) of Carnegie Hall. I was very close to the stage. David Byrne was up high...and came down to sing with her. It obviously wasn’t rehearsed as it took a little time to synchronize vocally. Still it was fun. I took a few videos with my cell phone including the song with Byrne. Not sure if I got a complete song ... Hopefully it got saved to the cloud... I’m not tech savvy. I should look for it. I think each song or snippet I filmed is too long to pass through social media but maybe through email? Or just posting to my FB page? Sorry ... free associating.... anyhow the next summer she performed it outdoors and free. I watched some of it ... it was crowded and people were having a good time. I’m forever grateful being a New Yorker and seeing so much music live since I was 14. Adrien Belew is one of my favorite guitarists and besides seeing him with the Heads and supporting David Bowie, and with King Crimson (still disappointed that they didn’t include him in their reunion long ago; I think he was disappointed too)-I’ve seen him solo several times in small venues over the decades. First at the Bottom Line (where I’ve seen dozens of outstanding shows: was so bummed when they shut down) when he put out his first solo album, and at intimate Joe’s Pub, and most recently at the jazz club in midtown whose name escape me. Iridium maybe? Thanks for indulging my little walk down memory lane (triggered by your comment).

Considering how the recording went, it’s amazing that they got such a classic out of those sessions. Timeless. Well, well. You have wandered into another of my top 5 all time albums. I'm a little surprised you didn't like this track more; it had an immediate effect on me. But when I first experienced it in 1980, I heard the entire album. I suspect you don't need repeated listenings to get on board--rather, context. When you play the entire album start to finish, or at least an entire side at a time, it will make more sense to you. I can tell you also that in 1980 there was nothing more fun on the dancefloor than a track off this album, especially side one. Proceed to the next song, but when you are done make sure to play it start to finish. You'll get it. And I guess this will have to suffice for the "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" request.

It introduces the album. At the time its sound was highly unique and it remains rather timeless in my opinion. The break is the end of the piece and then the next song arriving. Talking Heads were experimenting with a new tribal musical approach, applying this tribal form with Western lyrical concerns as if the music is the reminder that the government man needs to get outside of himself and feel things differently, which he is beginning to sense, but is having great difficulty breaking out of his situation so for me the song works really well and its repetitive pulse and sonic distinction is a repeating demand on him to get back to the heart of things.

Love Adrian Belew on this album. Also pleez do a track off of Byrne and Eno's album My Life In the Bush of Ghosts. Try 'Help Me Somebody'. The songs are all built on samples. This song is samples of a black preacher. Byrne does not sing on this album. It's all samples with added music.

All the songs on Remain In Light are essentially studio work with quite a bit of tweaking, experimentation and layering of instruments, sometimes with multiple bass or guitar parts held by multiple players at once, so on stage the songs didn't have the same sound or the same rendering. Add to this that the songs are very linear and deliberately play on the repetitive aspect of the many overlapping patterns. either you adhere to the process, or you stay cold, it depends ! This kind of music playing on repetition and trance was very popular in the early 80s with the Post-punk/New Wave movement. Simple Minds at the same time had the same kind of approach but with a totally different aspect. Talking Heads relied more on the Afro-funk world-music aspect while with Simple Minds this resulted in a colder, electronic and European sound. For comparison, you could try doing one of the tracks from Simple Minds' album called Empires and Dance (released a month before Remain In Light). "This Fear of Gods" is a good example of what I just explained.

Thank you for not commenting during the song, it's a huge testament to how heavy this jam is. There's a story combining from Fear of Music and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts continuing in this, the third act. The subject of the song's the offspring of the people from Life During Wartime, grown up now and having almost no sense of their humanity left since the government and/or church has taken over all aspects of daily life. The second song is a callback to their parents and throughout the rest of the album the narrative goes back and forth between them until it switches on side 2 to the "government" who envisioned their "body" that changed over time to what they saw the world as it should be in their eyes.

i respect your honesty,dont pretend to like something if you dont. I love this album though.Its impressive to think its made in 1980,we must allways take into account at what time things was released to appriciate the effort and innovation involved.But stay honest,because then we know for sure that you really mean it when you truly love a song.

Mmm. Eggs Benedict. I wish someone would make them for me EVERY DAY for breakfast. I suppose I could move to a fancy hotel for as long as my funds allow. So, about a week of Eggs Benedict, maybe. As for Remain In Light, when I first heard it as a callow youth, I felt I needed to adjust the motherboard in my brain somewhat - certainly the rhythm circuits. I tended to (and still) get excited about the kind of NEWNESS that is still accessible. Anyone can do supposedly-revolutionary, unlistenable avant-garde, but this was ultimately comprehensible even to a pop mind. Remain In Light is by far my favourite Talking Heads album (and I'm not implying that Fear Of Music and Speaking In Tongues aren't brilliant). There's truly not a dud on it. And the live versions...woooo.

JP: As pretty much everyone has said, this is their least 'accessible' album but it very often ends up being the favorite for hardcore Talking Heads fans. I suspect that maybe you'd find "Once in a Lifetime" more accessible from this album -- there's a reason why it was their single -- but mostly it's just a matter of adjusting to what they're laying down here. And you still may not like it, musical polytheist though you are. There are a lot of other TH albums that you'd probably take to sooner. Like...any of them? If you want a good opener, you can't go wrong with Burning Down the House from Speaking in Tongues (and then do the Stop Making Sense version). Or do "Nothing But Flowers" from Naked, or "Television Man" (or honestly anything) from Little Creatures. Or "Wild Life" from True Stories....

Great to see you exploring this. When I first heard this, I too didn't know what to make of it, but boy does it grow on you. Once in a Lifetime is of course the 'hit' from this album, but The Great Curve is my favourite - I hope you get there. And I would say, don't dig to deep into the lyrics. I don't think there is any sort of narrative there. It's all about mood and creating a general air of unease. David Byrne has done a lot of very interesting stuff. It's not necessarily proggy in the usual sense, but it's intricate, thoughtful, different music. "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is required listening. Another very interesting Byrne album is "Music for Knee Plays". Performance here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e6lokpeJzdSRoZc.html

Remain In Light is a great album, I concur, but FEAR of Music and More Songs about Buildings And Food are masterpieces from START to FInish, but hey what about Speaking In Tongues and Little Creatures TWO other masterpieces to discover.....Don't even get me started about Stop Making Sense....Saw them back in 1982 and they were magical....they even played a "new song" that would come out in the future....Burning Down The House....Also check out their first LP '77

"Once in a Lifetime" is a must. I think you'd have fun digging into "(Nothing But) Flowers" or "Love for Sale" in terms of lyrical content. "This Must Be the Place" is also gorgeous. Finally: I will die on the hill of 'the studio version of "Take Me to the River" is better than the Stop Making Sense cut.' The slower tempo and more prominent bass line do it many favors.
@matrobnew
@matrobnew 3 жыл бұрын
agreed on all counts. First, I'd say "Take Me to the River" is about the only cut that ISN'T improved by the SMS version. Second, Remain in Light is their least accessible album, period. Naked, Little Creatures, Fear of Music, True Stories, 1, 2 -- I mean all of them have more accessible melodies, with only a couple of songs even approaching the polyrhythmic wall of this album. And it's no accident "Once in a Lifetime" was their single from this one. But the polyrhythmic wall is also why this is...their best album. It just takes some getting used to.

Talking Heads are the ultimate "warm up to it" band - I totally get your first reaction to this being a little lukewarm - It's so dense and somewhat unrelenting that it's almost too much. However I promise you this will worm it's way into your brain and a few listens later it will just click. Do you ever find that the music you don't love immediately, that you gradually warm up to, can often end up being the thing you love the most?! That was my experience of Talking Heads :)

This is one of the major albums of the time that added African rhythms to rock music. Adrian Belew my mind… with that solo. Yeah, it’s a grower, some of this album lagged behind in favor but gradually came to equal the others. A great album imo. Finish the David Sancious album Transformation (Speed of Love) please. Peace and African rhythms Music

I am happy you enjoyed your Eggs Benedict. The sauce doesn't do it for me. Other than Huevos Racheros, I prefer my eggs without sauce. Leave the yolk runny and it makes it's own sauce. I like this song as a dance song. For me there some elements that make me think of African groups. Those steady relentless rhythms. Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" is probably one of the most famous songs from the Africa in this genre.

This album is an all-timer just on the strength of side 1 and "Once in a Lifetime". The last 4 tracks are fine but not up to same insanely high standard. Sometimes with a song like this that is just an extended groove, a first listen can be disappointing because, like you said, you're waiting, expecting a big change-up at some point, and it doesn't come. When you listen again, knowing up front that it's just all about stewing in that rich, meaty, bubbling groove for 6 minutes, I suspect you'll have a better time with it.

Remain In Light is a dense work of art. Born Under Punches is not the best track, it's just the beginning. The material really came to life on their subsequent tour. Watch some of the live videos from the 1980-1981 tour on youtube. And listen to the live album The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads. It is their best album.
