Laramy-K Optical is a digital surfacing and coating lab unlike any other. We provide our customers with independent, high-end alternatives to corporate brands. Through craftsmanship, technology, and independent, innovative vendors like Younger, IOT, A&R, and Quantum Innovations we offer our customers the Integrity portfolio of freeform lenses and coatings. Made in the USA, the Integrity brand is not a generic house-brand, but is the absolute best available, designed to give the wearer that “wow!” experience.
In addition to the digital line, we still offer conventional surfacing, including glass. Maintaining traditional equipment gives our customers vastly more flexibility in their dispensing, particularly when it comes to more difficult prescriptions.

I had a pair of eyeglasses with AR coating last literally 10 years, with near daily wear too, although not much outdoors since I mostly wear contact lenses when out. By the end, it was starting to show a bit of crazing and seemed to scratch way too easily but I thought 10 years was impressive and also feel lucky that my prescription didn't change much in that 10 year time so I could keep wearing them that long. Now that I'm getting older, I'm not sure that will be the case going forward. Ironically, the most scratching that was ever done to these lenses was done by the optometrist assistant while measuring the glasses during my eye exams. I'm always scared when they say- give me your glasses so we can check them. And then I examine the lenses later and there are scratches that weren't there before!

Just stopping by to say THANK YOU! I watched your videos while in Optical Dispensing school and studying for my ABO. Now that I'm licensed, I am still learning so much from you-- just learned how to restring semi rimless frames in the last video. This AR video is very helpful knowledge that you may be to embarrassed to ask a coworker-- it's basic simple stuff but helps so much in the workplace. Thank you John!!

You are very welcome. Nice to see that video getting some views. Funny that the theory videos have always had good numbers on YT and not so much on FB where the sales and retail stuff we just started a few months ago is the opposite, very little activity on YT but great numbers on FB. Weird.

Bless you for this video 😅 I work in a high tech industry area so I basically market it to what I think their background is. I’ve gotten savvy with the AI guys 😂 but it helps to really dig into the details so I don’t have to use filler phrases to hide the fact I’m not entirely sure why things cost so much on certain lens types. Edit: thankfully in my area not many care about the cost. They just want the best. But I have to often explain and market *why* it’s the best and then sometimes I freeze.

This is off the subject. Could you help me my prescription is R+1.25 +0.75 140. L +1.00 +0.50 120 And I need to see labels.close up. This is the prescription the optomologist game me. But I can't see close up when I went to pick up my glasses. I think they put distance rx😢
@LaramyKOptical
@LaramyKOptical Жыл бұрын
Unless they provided you with a distance and an add power I have no way of knowing what you should have for reading. That looks about right for someone in their 40's maybe a little weak for someone in their 50s or 60s certainly for reading very small print labels. Might expect that first. number to be stronger more like +2.25 and +2.00.

Why not go down the black hole of driving at night? I have uncoated bifocal lenses and driving at night is a HUGE problem. Every pair of headlights turns into multiple lights. What's the answer?

Do you recommend AR coating in northern countries (with very cold winter)? Going from indoor to outdoor, with temperature swings from 20C to -20C?
@LaramyKOptical
@LaramyKOptical Жыл бұрын
Sure, as I see it if the lens can take it - then the AR coating can take it too. We have the reverse here with swings from 20C to 43C when we go from AC to inside a car that has been sitting out in the sun for hours. (OK not quite as extreme.) I've never heard of any issues or seen any talk of it on any optician social media forums. John

Would removing the lenses after 2 years, and sending them back to the lab for AR re-coating, be a realistic option ? (assume the lenses are not significantly scratched)
@LaramyKOptical
@LaramyKOptical Жыл бұрын
No. The lens surface has to be factory perfect for best results. Although they may look perfect after two years they aren't what they were when new. Also the chemical prep series required pre-application isn't designed for multiple rounds.

So was that last part of the video saying non glare with sunglasses or a gradient tint is beneficial?
@LaramyKOptical
@LaramyKOptical 2 жыл бұрын
I'm working on the video about tints now. Short answer is: A good BACKSIDE non-glare coating on a good pair of sunglasses is great. A gradient tint is cosmetic only - it serves no other function(s).

Thanks John. Great info. Do you recommend any particular product for cleaning lenses with A/R? I've been using cool tap water with a drop of Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap, then drying with -- newly discovered -- Kimwipes. P.S. I love the cost you mention for A/R... Optometry offices in So California charge twice as much.
@LaramyKOptical

Care & Feeding is a video I just finished last week. But it might not be out for months yet. Short answer is: Zeiss lens cleaner in a spray bottle - available on Amazon. Not a fan of soaps - since they can build up over time and can get in between the lens and frame and cause smearing problems. Kimwipes are great but a quality paper towel will do the job as well for a fraction of the cost. John

I live in a very poor town. I feel like AR is basically upselling something that isnt necessary. This is just one of the issues I have as an optician apprentice. More times than not, people bring them in as the coating is deteriorating. Whether it's their fault or not....I have had some say they felt pressured to get it. Now that I know it begins to break down straight out of the vaccum, I dont feel good selling it. And, does it really help with glare at night if it in fact lets more light in? I feel more like a used car salesman.
@LaramyKOptical
@LaramyKOptical Жыл бұрын
I am very sorry that is your takeaway from that video. It certainly isn't what is intended. Is that really what you hear me doing during the role-play? Maybe try watching the other videos we have about AR?

@@deidraboswell8451you have to remember that patients will invest in what’s important to them. When you present the value of safe nighttime driving, the patient can decide whether or not it’s worth the price. It’s not up to you to decide for them, it’s your job to educate them so they can make an informed decision. To answer your question, more light entering the lens is a good thing, as light scatter is what creates glare. The coating slows down the light rays to let more light into the lens, which reduces the perceived glare. I’ve found blue AR to be especially helpful for night driving because most folks complain about the bright LED headlights - I always explain they’re so bright because LEDs are blue diodes. The sun puts out the most blue light, think of a daylight-bright LED bulb compared to traditional warmer incandescent bulbs and how they make your eyes feel less strained when looking toward them. I’m in South Carolina, I liken an uncoated lens to your windshield during pollen season vs fresh out of the car wash. You’ll still get some halos and starbursts but the image is much sharper because more light is coming directly through. Hope this helps!

I was recently at the eye doctor and was quoted $588 just for my lenses without the frames. I wanted to buy from them because I do want to support local and the eye Dr was super nice. I need the local eye Dr for exam but I just can't afford to pay $700+ for 1 pair of glasses. I was able to get a pair with high index for $130 on line. If the brick and mortar wasn't so much higher I would consider getting from them but there needs to be some way for the price to be more fair. I have purchased online for over 10 years and have never gotten a bad pair. I do believe for some people they need the guidance of someone. But it just is not feasible for some others either. Your videos are really informative
