Way back in the 60s my Mother instructed the teacher that ALL my spelling mistakes were to be marked and when the teacher said they only marked the first three because it was important that children learned to express themselves my mother replied - 'she will express herself AND learn to spell in the process. Your methods will only reinforce bad spelling - do your job properly.' It's not a new thing but parents had far more influence back then.

I would like to think that historical dramas teach people especially the young about history so what would this be teaching??How to rewrite history and confuse people. Dawn you have lost the plot it seems, it’s ridiculous that a non-white actress playing a historical figure, have we suddenly become short on white actors? Kevin was right it’s also a one way street. I’m sure there’s other roles she could do. I’m sick of putting non white people in roles which wouldn’t have been historical true or turning favourite book characters black in totally different settings. Why can’t they leave historical programmes etc alone, and just have non white actors in other films or tv, I obviously have no problem with a film being totally cast with non white actors if the context is right. I would think a film about Martin Luther King, played by a white or Chinese person ridiculous and wrong! Everyone needs to get a grip!

I'm Dyslexic, so I have an excuse for not having perfect spelling as I can't control my brain doing typos. However, I do have a pet hate of people not knowing simple rules such as "their" versus "there". That "You are" is "you're" not "your". There does need to be standards around English education. If anything, it is not fair on those learning the language from others countries. How are they going to master the language if they are seeing bad examples?

Dawn (a favourite - and I enjoy the exchanges) would be correct in the assertion that "acting" is "acting" and anyone can play a part in fiction- but in the case of historical representation - it is important visually (especially where dramatic licence has been employed and some factual events changed and some other characters are invented) that known historical figures who were white, are represented as white. Lord, we got into trouble for "black-facing" so let's not repeat the error having white characters played by black. Two wrongs do not make a right.

I was at university in the early seventies. No spellcheckers, and I had a tendency to spell believe as "beleive" (don't know why). Anyhow, I submitted an essay to the professor with about three misspellings of this word. I got the essay back with the only comment being " 'I' before 'E' except after 'C' ". Handing it back he said to me "Sorry about this, and I am sure all your teachers have tried to correct your spelling since primary school, For their sakes, I thought I should give it one more try before you leave the education system."

A while back I made the mistake of going to see Richard III at the Globe theatre. Given the circumstances, I was expecting Richard to be like he was: a tricky man made up to look as though he had a hunch-back. After all, we have all seen the role played by Laurence Olivier in the film. Imagine my surprise when 'Richard' was a woman wearing a dirty T-shirt. No hunchback, no Shakesperean costumes, just stupid wokery. We left at the interval and I shall never go to that theatre again. It deserves to go bankrupt.
