In the midst of the Egyptian Arab Spring, Bassem Youssef leaves his job as a heart surgeon to become a full-time comedian. Dubbed, “The Egyptian Jon Stewart,” Bassem creates the satirical show, Al Bernameg (“The Show”). The weekly program quickly becomes the most viewed television program in the Middle East, with 30 million viewers per episode (15 times the viewership of The Daily Show).
Tickling Giants, directed by Sara Taksler, tells the story of political satire in a country where free speech is not settled law. Bassem and his staff must endure physical threats, protests, and legal action, all because of jokes. Tickling Giants follows the team of Al Bernameg as they discover democracy is not easily won. Despite increasing danger, the team at Al Bernameg employs comedy, not violence, to comment on hypocrisy in media, politics, and religion.

I sooooo wish the american audience could magically understand arabic for just one weekend and binge Albarnameg which was Bassem's show... not only the jokes are funny and VERY clever, but you could get how risky his job was during those circumstances and in a dictatorship. That man is a free speech hero

If you want a reliable source of what's really happening in many of the countries in the middle-east, Bassem is a very reliable source, because he experienced everything before and after the revolutions, and he is unshackled by the social and religious norms.

I would change the world "Middle East" with "The Arab World" as there are non-Arab countries in that region too and he doesn't really know them.

I watched a lot of the interviews with Bassem Youssef, pretty much all you can find on KZfaq. This is somehow the most elegant, most relaxed and simply the best. Enjoyed it a lot. The questions were great, up to point but with a very balanced moderation... I don't know how to put this... Good journalism I guess. And it happened in a Google talk? (in other news: Google shut down its service known as Google Talk...) Also I guess Bassem got used to giving interviews in US, and adapting to the taste of comedy there and adjusted to know when he needs to keep being serious.

wow when Mr Bassem says "that the army is even more sacred than religion"...i was in egyot just last month ONLY for 3 days and i swear, before een knowing about bassem and this thing he said, i thought the same thing. I talked with a man who said to me to check in wich place the military force of egypt was in the mondial ranking, in a proud and scary way...he was just proud is is between the first in the world...

Man this is typical dictatorship brainwashing 101... having an army ranked in the top 20 meanwhile you have nearly 5 million egyptians living in graveyards (worth a google) and 1/3 of the country makes less than 2 dollars a day, this is not strenght

This show would be much better on a stage, in some nice chairs, with good lighting, ... and some production.

My own way ... these days I'm asking myself how come the word "Alien" came to be, and how is that linked to people, who claim to be the chosen people of God. I don't know about you , but I think this is Really funny. I mean some people think they are unicorns , that's ok... hahahaha and these are the people who think of unification !? hahahahah

this guy was wickedly manipulated to undermine the egyptian revolution. His show was influencial in bringing down the first democratically elected egyptian president.I like to think that Bassim was unaware of the role he was made to play.but who knows maybe he was complicit.I can't believe that this guy is a fool.
