For whatever reason it maintains value in the free market whereas Fiat currencies, aka paper money, always become devalued because their only value is the authority of the government backing it. Money is whatever we are willing to accept as value for our goods or services, but to have a state currency that can be printed and given to major corporations as bailouts while at the same time devaluing the currency and essentially taxing people who save money in a bank is insane.
