So, no need to sell the G1 version just to pick up the slightly improved new one? It goes without saying that the G2 is the better buy if starting from owning neither. Many G1 owners are thinking should they upgrade....? Thanks for doing this Tom!

I agree, great comparison! Also about buying new..I bought the gen 1 at the end of 2020 for SEK 6000 with a SEK 1000 cashback Tamron was doing then; the new version seems a little nicer but has been more than SEK 10000 since release. If I sold the gen 1 for ~ SEK 3500 I'd be paying ~SEK 7000 for the new one in subtotal, which is currently 675 euro and doesn't really seem worth it at all, especially since I don't really have any issues with the bokeh of the gen 1 in most instances. Thanks again for the nice comparison.

Yeah, I think you're right. Although the upgrades on the G2 are nice, I personally don't use my G1 enough to warrant selling it and upgrading. I suspect many others will come to the same conclusion.

We've seen similar improvements with the Sony 24-70 II. Next the Sony 16-70 f4 OSS and the Tamron 17-70 should get similar updates. And I really hope to see an improved Sigma 18-50 with better corner sharpness...

Wow. This video is like a hip hop music video. Everything was so fast, on speed X2. Fast cut transition, rapping speed info, and distracted by the pretty girl. Just like music, I had to watch the video over to fully understand the lyrics. Haha. It was very entertaining. Good work.

Thanks Paul. Should I start a career as a hip hop artist, is that what you're saying? 😜

@@TomCalton hey it worked. You got more full length views. I saw the video 3 times then purchased the lens. Haha. I even paused to take a moment to think.

Someone wrote in the german Amazon Store: I already have the 1st generation lens and will keep it. Either my good or the 2nd generation lens I received is simply not better. I tested with a tripod to be able to compare the pictures better. At F 5.0 and 50mm I could see the only noticeable improvement in sharpness with the G2. Improvements in the corners were not visible compared to my "old" lens. However, I did not test with a test chart, but took photos that I would otherwise take. I can't judge about the better autofocus, because with the 1st generation it's already fast enough for my needs. In videos it is reported that the G2 should not be so sensitive. I didn't have any cream on my hands, but you could still see fingerprints on the rubber ring of the zoom. I then tapped around on my old lens and could not find any such traces. The most negative thing I noticed was the stronger existing chromatic aberrations, which was ultimately the decisive factor for me to return the lens. I have a Sony A7 III. Perhaps the improvements in this lens are only noticeable on a "bigger" camera.

That is very interesting. Thanks for commenting. I have to say that my Gen.1 Tamron lenses (the 17-28 and 28-25) both look as good as new - no fingerprints or scratches, but I have noticed that I have some shiny finger marks already on my newer Tamron 28-200 lens. That is my only complaint about it though!

Hi Tom, Maybe I missed that but I was not able to find a video which answers my question. What is the better option? Sigma 28-75 DG DN (C) or Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 G2? As far as I saw, in your previous video you tested the G1 against the Sigma, so I am curious what would you say after tested the G2 :)

Thanks for the review! Between the tamron 17-70mm and 28-75mm, which one would you choose if the focal length is not a concern? I am using sony a6600 and the primary purpose is to take pictures of my kid who never stand still! Is it better if both the camera and the lens have image stabilization? Thanks.

Personally, I would always opt for lenses with a fixed maximum aperture of f/2.8, rather than zooms with variable maximum apertures. Having IS on a lens is helpful, but certainly not manditory. None of my lenses have IS and I can't say I've ever needed it. You should be absolutely fine just using the IS that's on your a6600. I hope this helps!

17-70mm is for APS-C and 28-75mm is for FF. it depends on your sensor. so it gotto be 17-70mm.

I got a question : How did yoou improve the image quality of the photo ? I have a Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 (Di III RXD) and I got better image quality with this than the new 28-75 G2. IDK if this lens isn't so sharp but I'm a little dissapointed with this new lens (I was hoping the same image quality/sharpness). In comparison with the 17-28, I´m using it since October 2020 and this new 28-75 since a month and a half. Do you think perhaps that I'm using it wrong ?

The Tamron 17-28mm is a very sharp lens because it only had 9mm of zoom. It's practically a prime. If they made It 16-35 it would be a lot less sharp.
